I've got myself an entry level JVC belt drive TT, and wanted to change the cartridge, and get some basic vinyl care acessories.
Planning to buy an AT 92E cartridge, but not sure what to kit to buy for cleaning records, and what anti static brush to use.
Since am just starting out, would like to limit my spend. Right now am looking at a discwasher washing kit - there seem to be a number of kits on amazon for what seems to be the same thing, but with different reviews
And an audioquest brush.

If there is anything else I should buy/ any of the above I should change - Would appreciate inputs!

Greenhorn,

Save your money. Use 80% distilled water, 20% isopropyl alcohol from a chemist outlet stockist and a few drops of dishwashing liquid like Pril for 1 litre. Carbon fibre brush for before play use, can pick up from any of the online guys.

More details pls... do you mix these three things? Can you give exact proportions in cups/teapspoons?

I'm aware that the solution is diluted IPA, but I thought you needed a seperate brush for wet cleaning records, or are there any local substitutes available?

greenhorn, please see :

1. The IPA bottle
2. IPA (30%)+ water + couple of drops of surfactant, kept ready to use.
3. A pad made from foam covered by a MF cloth - used for applying the solution to the record.
4. The microfiber cloth - used to wipe out the applied solution.

This works great for cleaning the records.

Hi Sandesh,

Yes mix these three things. I used to use a 1 liter bisleri bottle. I've given you the proportions. You can vary these, adding more of isopropyl making it 30% and distilled water 70% or even 60-40 ratio. Cups/teaspoons are not relevant, you can use whatever you want or pour directly into the final 'mix' bottle since the proportions are there. Just do it roughly its not that important. For more dirty records use higher proportion of iso alcohol. The few drops per liter of Pril or liquid washing solution is for the mix to get into the grooves. Hope this helps.

And of course don't forget to rinse the record properly in distilled water. I use RO water from the water purifier.

Regards

Sann has not only given you a solution, even a picture!

I used to use and recommend a scrub pad pink in colour made by 3M Scotchbrite. One side was sponge the other was non scratch thicker weave. Used to use this side. Also wrapped velvet in thermocol block.

+1 to above. You can also dry records using Vacuum cleaner for better result. You can use flat extension attachment of vacuum cleaner covered with Microfiber cloth.

Hi,

Could you please tell me how you rinse the records after cleaning ? Do you pour distilled water over them or dip them in it ? And is it ok to wipe with microfiber cloth afterwards or it's better to leave them to air dry ?

Hi studiord,

I used to dunk them in a tub of distilled water and then pour some more distilled water over them while holding them over a tub to get rid of final soapy traces on record and hands. Microfiber pat dry then zap them with the zerostat antistatic gun so they dont attract dust and leave in a kitchen dedicated rack to air dry.

Regards

Hi Studiolord,

I also use the dunking method as it helps get a lot of embedded dirt away into the water which would otherwise get into the grooves. I use a vacuum cleaner to dry them after the dunk to insure that I have got all the dirt out.

Thanks

Thanks vkriti for the reply. I usually scrub with the 3M non-scratch sponge and then pour distilled water over each side before placing the record between 2 microfibre cloths and then dabbing them to absorb the water and then letting them air dry. I am thinking of getting a vacuum but don't know which one to go for....all I know is it should be a wet cleaner.

Any wet/dry vacuum household cleaner should do. You can adapt a nozzle with a slit and felt for suction. Else a regular vacuum with the pipe going into a container towards the top end and on the other side, a pipe at the bottom to suck up the water from the record. The container in the middle traps the water and prevents it from going into the dry vacuum cleaner. Else, the moth audio diy rcm kit is great value for money and a solid option.

Hey Studio RD,

It seems that you are Panchamda fan. Pls correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi studiolord,

i use a fine brush with soft bristles to wash the LP's. I then use a standard home vacuum cleaner with a water trap in between, for the water trap i use a glass bottle from a standard suction machine which is used in all hospitals. The bottle with the cork and tubing is available at a lot of medical equipment shops. It cost me rs 300 in Delhi. if you have a vacuum cleaner at home i suggest you use the same.

Regards

You are absolutely right. And if I am not wrong, you the the same Sourav from OurHFM...isn't it? :)

True. :-) . I have just upgraded to Shure M97 Xe on my Technics 1200 MK II and listening to Swami Dada (mint LP). The aftermath is: SQ is just like butter or ice cream. It's melting slowly in my mouth (ear here). But still burning period is not over.

What sort of brush can I use to clean the stylus tip?

I see these camera lens/LCD cleaning kits.. will they work ?

People seem to have had some luck with magic eraser. Have ordered a pack locally. Let's see if it works or not.

Unless you really need to ... don't touch it. At least not until you are beginning to get used to the dynamics and fragility of vinyl and the equipment it is played on.

If your stylus needs any more than the dust removing, then please try to get someone who has current experience of TTs to help you at first. Otherwise, use any tiny, softish brush, and remember to move it forwards/backwards and never side to side.

Better that it be a little dirty than destroyed by over-enthusiastic cleaning.

^^ Magic eraser should do the job very well. I use a natural hair (I think it is horse's hair) painting brush.

I think the camera lens cleaning brushes should do the job. I'd be interested to know what the other members think about this.
