Hi,

first of all warm wishes for the festival to you and your family guys !

am a new member here, and urgently require some advice on whether i should buy the 40EX720 or 40ST30D. my mind is thoroughly torn apart between the two. some points to consider :

1. aim is normal tv usage and gaming.

2. price am getting for the 40EX720 is ~75k; for the 42ST30D, its ~65k; (50ST30D ut of my budget @ ~90k, and 42VT20D not available)

3. going to see a demo in a few mins from now.

kindly pardon if the post seems devoid of all the info required, since am really in haste and would be leaving within sometime, and would probably book a set between the two then and there. pls, if possible, pour in some suggestions and advise :)

To cut a long story short, both models are good choices in their own leagues ...

EX720 is a VFM 3D LED/LCD model and comes with a few goodies bundled for Diwali.
ST30D is a new entrant in the entry level 3D Plasma series and has a growing fan list here.

Honestly, the plasma world is different from the LCD one and its unfair to compare the two - apples and oranges ;)

Demo and decide for yourself. Good luck and festive greetings!

Add 46D6000 and 50VT20 to the demo. Both are ~80k.

thanks for the wishes ! am back now.....i saw a BRrip on both the TVs......parents and brother instantly took a liking for the PQ of the ST30D. though we agreed that brightness of the plasma looked a little low, which some forum members too have pointed out for this TV set.

had taken my ps3 too there, but there was some problem hooking it up on the sony tv, so would be going there tomorrow again.

also, easily managed to get cool deal on both of them - 63k for both of them ! also, before going i just read on this forum that some of them have managed to get their hands on 50VT20D for ~75k from hypercity, croma outlets at some cities......gonna check it out tomorrow at the local outlets here too for the VT20D.

i want to know what would be better for GAMING ?! some have told me that EX720 would be good, due to the risk of image-retention in the plasma, though the sales-person insists that this problem has been rectified long back. but need some more opinions. please suggest friends :)

@ blasto :

yeah would be searching for the VT one tomorrow......i have read many posts of yours. hope to get some assistance from you :)

Check http://www.hifivision.com/television/21696-vt20-blacks-level-depth-hd-sd-pics-vs-b450.html for pictures. it does not tell a story but gives a heads up.

For games, you cannot play for the first 100 hours on any plasma.

Stick to the basics. Dont get a plasma if you have overly bright living room. Have a look at 46D6000. I think it is better than the 720 (Not sure of 3D).

Also, 40" will be small (even compared to 42") and will prompt an upgrade in few years. Better get 46" if you are looking for LED.

oh ok......yeah i think i would be getting a bigger size if i go the LED way....40" seemed bit small........and this plasma thing has kept me on my toes....to go for it or not......gaming would be a major thing which i would be using the TV for, though can wait for the 1st few hundred hours or so........and the room, though bright in the day, can be well darkened since the windows have got thick curtains.......very very confused right now :S

Make up your mind on the plasma versus LED/LCD path - based on your priorities and the strengths and weaknesses of both technologies.
Otherwise, I must warn you, it will be a long drawn and unnerving experience :P

Never take a salesman's words seriously ;) Their job is to sell TVs not "guide" you.
That said, he clearly is clueless and is only telling you what Panasonic will want you to hear.
Image retention is still a problem with plasmas including panasonic VT20. Google Panasonic plasma image retention and you find at least a few hundred if not thousands of results.

So let me say it once again, the ST30 is the better TV but EX720 is the better "gaming" TV. And avoid Samsung D6000 due to high input lag while gaming. EX720 has the same input lag as the 2011 Panasonic Flagship plasma VT30. Entry level Bravia models like BX have even lower input lag.

am neck-deep in the quicksand ! i am in the process of enquiring about the 50VT20D when i read this post ^^^^

but i also read the review of the above TV, where it got the 'reference level' rating, and it said the gaming session on it was absolutely fantastic, and there was just a temporary image-retention problem when the TV was on some particular mode, which i forgot......am really stuck up ! the PQ & size of the plasma is luring me like hell, but just this stupid 'gaming & burn-in' issue is making me go bonkers ! kya karu ?!

My VT20 has motion issues in fast pan scenes in 50Hz content which I did not see in my previous samsung plasma.
Iam not a gamer but you can find many owners here who use the VT20 for gaming. With the motion issues in 50Hz content, I think it might suraface in fast motion games too.. Check out before you pull out the cheque book. Sorry I can't help you with this as I dont play games or own a console.

hey seeker
just go for a plasma, makes a huge difference while playing. just follow some procedures like switching to game mode on the tv and giving the tv a break after about 30min of game play... but you shouldn't play games for the first 200hrs.
my friend has his pc connected to his 2 or 3 year smasung plasma(dont know the name!) the games look way better as compared to when he connects his sony lcd tv! you will enjoy gaming on a plasma!

Buy Samsung 51D550 plasma(51inch plasma available for 64k with 2 3D glasses free). It is very good for all your requirements. I personally own it and do gaming, watch movies, watch tv channels and tried out pretty much everything one can do with a tv. It is very very good and also it has very faint image retention after hours of gaming and that will go away within 5 minutes if you switch on the scrolling screensaver built into the tv to remove the IR residues.

It is also a lot more brighter than ST30 and looks almost as bright as an LED TV in a light controlled environment. Just you need to place it so that it has less glare.

thanks blasto & andre ! i understand....

y'day i had connected my ps3 to the ST30D in the showroom......i found the brightness of the tv quite low.....changing the brightness or the tv modes didnt help. also, the ps3 menu looked as was embossed on the tv screen ! i have read a post where a member had pointed towards this issue. could anyone tell hows the brightness in the VT20 ?
though the EX720 was all 'glowy' with the game on :)

@ madhav - thanks for suggesting this ! i have read many good things about this set.....but i like to play in a well-lit and bright surroundings.....IMO feels more lively :D and i have read reflection is a considerable issue with this set. nevertheless, will check out this set too in the samsung showroom today :)

The reflection issues are blown out of proportion by panasonic fanboys in this forum, all reflection issues are pointed out by just 1 or 2 owners of the tv and everyone else is happy with it and it is only panasonic fanboys who haven't even seen d550 in proper home environmnent and only compare the showroom lighting which is too much light and make unfair comparison. Reflection is not so much of an issue. You just make sure directly too much sunlight does not fall on the tv, thats it. Trust me, there are a lot of people with 51D550 plasma and it is just excellent !!!!

i guess the vt20,gt20 are your best bet in plasma range if you play with lights on! if you could find a last year Samsung plasma with the Ar filter then that tv will also be good, i think blasto has seen one? but if your room is to brightly lit then you will have to go for a led tv!
i feel gaming with the minimum amount of lighting is the best!!!:ohyeah:
anyway just take your ps3 any try it out on many tvs!!
but if in future in you want to game in total darkness, which most people like to, than your eyes are gonna feel tired if you have a lcd/ led tv!!

Care to explain?

i guess it happens to me only! cant sit for more than an hour in front of a led/lcd tv! i guess it affects me bcoz of the screen size! i sit about 2feet from a 40inch screen(only when playing games). happens only in the night when all the ligts are off!

sorry if i generalized it!

thanks again madhav & andre !

gonna try out the console on the TVs........my current TV has large windows on both the sides, and mom keeps them open till noon for the sunlight to enter in through.....and i find gaming in this time-slot, ie, 10/11-12/1 the most pleasing. i find gaming in dark gloomy. nevertheless, am sure it wont be much of a problem with plasmas with the curtains drawn a little bit.

i guess after 1-2 visits more, i should just place an order on impulse after checking the PQ on each TV. finish, then and there :P

Well given your room condition its better to get a LCD it has much higher real world perceived contrast.
