hi,

I switched on my Sony 40EX500 tv today & saw a vertical green line on the screen. (bought it just 1mth ago)

This was stationery/fixed & green in color ( something like stuck/dead pixel) I then observed it for 10-15 min while switching channels in Tata sky & also present when i switched to Blu-ray playback on HDMI.

Then i switched the TV off & then on: it was still there, but went away after 5mins.
Now i have switched it off & on 2-3 times after this, but it hasn't recurred.

What to do?
should i call sony?? (its not there at the moment; so even if the technician comes- he isn't gonna see anything..)

The same thing happened with my 4year old PC Samsung LCD monitor. It was initially transient, then fixed line & then the number of lines increased.
Now its kaput.

I am absolutely worried now- this thing cost a bomb- 70k !!:sad::sad:

Use the TV more frequently over the next couple of weeks and if this reappears, either keep the TV it like that until a techie arrives or take multiple clear pics to show them.

Well sorry to say this, any apparently small problem in Sony products may be symptoms of larger problem.

My 29" CRT TV(DR29) was switching off automatically once in a while and standby light blinking 4 times for 2-3 weeks. Since it was working normally for few hours and the problem was intermittent Sony service people said it could be due to moisture. And then one day picture became "pin-cushion"

Called the service people again, they told to bring the TV to service center and they will repair it in one day. They replaced the part responsible for "pin-cushion". After this TV has developed new problem. It switches itself off immediately and standby light blinking 2 times.

Now Sony service people are telling me that one particular circuit board has to be replaced fully. It is three weeks since they ordered for that board and it has not yet come.

It is better you ask for the new TV. Even if they rectify it here and there TV may trouble you after one year or so.

When I went to Sony service center I found 2-3 LCD TV's of BX and EX series had come to repair (26" and 32"). Really surprised with this !!!!!

the damn line has reappeared.. i have called the service helpline & they will send a engineer(hopefully tmrw)
I am gonna blast them off for a replacement.

Buxx, do not use foul words even if they are hidden by 'xxxx'

Don't worry. This problem requires replacement of LCD panel. It is as good as getting a new TV.

Dell to recall 4 million batteries - CNET News

Dell and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission plan to recall 4.1 million notebook batteries on Tuesday, a company representative confirmed Monday.
The recall affects certain Inspiron, Latitude and Precision mobile workstations and XPS units shipped between April 2004 and July 18, 2006. Sony manufactured the batteries that are being recalled, the representative said. Click here to see photos of recalled batteries.
If they have one of the affected units, consumers are advised to eject the battery from the notebook after powering down and continue using the notebook with its AC power adapter, the CPSC said. Dell has so far received six reports of overheating units that caused property damage, but no injuries.
Dell has faced several issues this year related to exploding or flaming notebooks, and wants to ensure the safety of its customers, the representative said. The 4.1 million units is a subset of the 22 million units shipped during that time frame, he said. Dell said it doesn't expect the cost of the recall to materially affect its earnings. The company reports earnings for the previous quarter this Thursday.
At the moment, this looks like the largest battery recall in the history of the electronics industry, said Roger Kay, an analyst with Endpoint Technologies Associates. "The scale of it is phenomenal."
Sony will help pay the costs associated with the recall of 4.1 million batteries the company supplied to Dell, said Rick Clancy, a Sony spokesman.
"We are supporting Dell's recall," Clancy said. "There will be financial assistance and we are sharing engineering data and both doing further research." He declined to specify exactly how much assistance Sony would provide.

Customers will be able to go to a Dell Web site or to the Consumer Product Safety Commission site to determine if they need a new battery. Dell also plans to launch a toll-free number, 1-866-342-0011, for people affected by the situation, IDC analyst Richard Shim said.
"It's a huge deal," Shim said, particularly for Dell customers with employees in remote locations or traveling. "If you have people all over the field, then you're asking folks to send in the batteries and run off just AC (alternating current power) until they can get new batteries shipped out to them."
Dell had only six incidents over millions of units, Shim said, but it's "a dangerous situation."
What causes the problem?
Lithium ion batteries have two to three times the energy density of nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal hydride batteries and four times the energy density of lead-acid batteries. Higher energy density translates to longer battery life. Lithium ion batteries are used in consumer electronics and notebooks, which only require a limited amount of energy. Hybrid cars and power tools, however, generally use more traditional batteries, in part because of the risk of explosion.

The problems Dell is having stem from impurities within the anode and cathode of the battery, said Kay, who was briefed on the problems by Dell executives. Over time, those impurities, usually tiny pieces of metal, can work their way to the edge of the anode or cathode and rupture the isolator that sits between the two, he said. Once that happens, you get a short circuit and possibly a fire.
In cell phones, lithium ion batteries can overheat because of a short circuit. If the temperature rises slowly, the battery case may melt. If it rises rapidly, however, enough pressure may be generated to create a small explosion in a lithium ion battery. Consumers have suffered severe burns as a result of these failures. The chemical reaction that produces energy in a lithium ion battery is considered quite violent.
Several companies, including Valence Technology and PowerGenix, are working on safer lithium ion batteries or batteries which rely on different chemicals.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

The sony engineer came yesterday, saw the problem, kicked some pics on his cell ( i gave more pics of the problem on his pen drive; virus infected i may add..)
Also, took xerox of the bill & took the service coupon.

He said that he will send all the stuff for Approval to change panel; by Tuesday approval should come & he will take the tv for Panel replacement to Mathura road & it should be back by Saturday;if all goes well...

I am disappointed that the the panel needs to be changed, but atleast their service seems ok. he did'nt argue about the problem & also told me that mostly if there's any problem in the LCD TVs; then its usual for the parts to be replaced rather than be repaired. so there...

Also, told me that sony offers service/parts replacement for the grey market sets as well- but at a higher price than for sets bought with Bill& warranty..

Yes Panel replacement is the only solution for Vertical lines.

If Sony offers additional warranty, do take it. Cost of panel is about the same as cost of TV.

And this is a common problem with LCD panels.

Nope.. no additional warranty available on any product from Sony except Vaio laptops.
Cost of panel for this particular model is 24k for B & W Customers..

Did you check the voltage from mains,do you use a good quality voltage stabilizer.
My neigbours not so old samsung C530 lcd panel went kaput,i know the voltage they get ,which is around 270v at night, even during day 250v is quite common.Since lcd & plasma are not designed to operate more then 240v without any damage .

I had similar problems of vertical lines for half the screen on my EX700 after barely a fortnight and had to change the panel... and got additional warranty of 3 months for the hassle.

whom did you have to talk to get the additional warranty?

I talked to the regional customer support head for chennai...don't remember the name now...(may be Sandra)...btw this happened during football world cup..and i had got the TV for the WC and then the TV developed the problem...

so the Sony world sales manager had also put in a word for me...initially I blasted them and asked for a refund as there were delays in getting the problem attended...for a few days they had provide me a 32' TV for standby.

I had almost finalized on SONY 32Ex400 for my bedroom. But after reading so many complaints regarding their TV's I changed my mind and bought Panasonic 32u20. Picture is good with TATA sky. Sound is not bad. I saved few thousands by not buying Sony which I will use to buy Panasonic or Philips blue ray player.

I hope Panasonic won't disappoint me.

Sorry to hear this sad with Sony.

I hope you will get a fresh like TV after this replacement.

I am having one month old 40ex400 but no issue so far. The first thing i bought along with TV was VG Crystal stabilizer.

Expecting your reviews after service..

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
