Hi,
can you please suggest a good headphone to get from US? A friend of mine is travelling and plans to get one for me.

Requirements:
- closed back design for isolation (little sound leaking is Okay..)
- Comfortable for long listening
- balanced sound. i.e not too much of Bass
- something around 5k would be fine

Also best place to order from?

Thx!

Easiest to order is thru amazon. Just look at their top twenty list and look for those with four stars and above.....CNET too has gone onerboard and they got a list of great headphones under hundred dollars.

B&W P5 or P3.
Ticks all the boxes.
I have P5 and its very comfortable for long hours of listening. Its covered with sheep skin.
P3 is the newly introduced model which is foldable.

How are the ATH M50?
Not exactly below $100 but looks promising as used as studio monitors so should have balanced sound.

Grado Sr60i - for $79 from amazon..

check the net for the product review and description..

I am going in for one myself

Thanks mpw, I have heard really good reviews of Grado's will check them.

Can these headphones we are talking about be powered via a headphone amp or are they a separate class of headphones? Possibly in future I may get in a headphone amp so would like to be future proof.

I am facing the same dilemma as rohitmusic and coincidentally even I have someone coming back from US, so I can order for a pair of headphones

After going over the characteristics of all the cans suggested here, and trying out a few other comparable products I have realized I like a warm, rich, vibrant sound compared to neutral sounding cans - with a little more oomph and bass at the lower end (not Beats level though).

Fatigue is a big issue for me because I listen to headphones for 3-4 hours everyday. My usage is mainly in my office where I put on my headphones and work. So it cannot be open-back as leakage is a strict no no.
Prefer it to be a lighter/portable model as wearing the bigger circum-aural models for 3-4 hours is a sureshot headache inducer (I have tried the Sennheiser HD280 and its just impossible to keep on for more than an hour. Its heavy, ears hurt and get heated up etc)
I am currently using a Audio Technica SJ55, whose sound isnt as rich & vibrant as I'd like it to be, bass is also bit lacking - its great for vocals though. And I liked the sound of the HD280

So I have come to a shortlist of 3 (or 4) headphones
The Klipsch Image One - $100
AKG K450 - $76
Sennheiser HD 219 - $30 (Sennheiser HD 228 - $64)

All of them have a warmish sound, clear mids and slightly more bass (Sennheiser models more than the others). The Klipsch is the most reviewed model among these, so its reviews are very easy to find. The others are not that well known

Looking for any other inputs from forum members.

rohitmusic,

The Audio technica m50 and Grado Sr60i are good options for the budget. Keep in mind that though a monitor at m 50, is supposed to be slightly bass heavy. The Sr60 on the other hand has a slightly forward presentation.

Thanks iaudio. I was tending towards the Grado 80i althought they will leak sound. Read some reviews that ATs are bit bright? and not suitable for long listening.

Rohit, Please do give some serious thought to picking up a pair of Orthos like Vivek suggested. It would do pretty good with what you listen to I guess.
