Which is the Brighter Tv- CRT Or Plasma?
want to know in specific situation of a direct head on comparison of "perceiving" a brighter picture between a 10 yr old 29"CRT tv at default settings & a 2011 51" Neopdp Plasma samsung d550(also at default settings), installed in a dimly lit room with only 1 window,1 door(have thick big curtains) & 1 skylight (glass ventilator)@ approx 14ft high(no curtains) facing the tv at approx distance of 22-25ft from the tv?

Also, there r about 12 artificial lightings for the room, including tubes, cfls & tb @ various wattages(all of which r NOT N' all together most of the time), but even when viewing something good like movies, etc( Majority Night time viewing), we prefer a semi dark(light behind tv on)/darkened room, preferably NO lights, & my 10 years CRT Simply gives brilliant picture & "COMPLETELY" disappears in the dark in black scenes, which i enjoy so much,& done so all through the years!

This Brightness question only natually rises to the most imperative question which actually is the moot question here > can i have an idea of how much reflection be found in this above situation on the plasma to view the tv without much distraction? // current crt tv does show some reflection but not much distracting if the opposite door& windows r close or curtained & artifical lights r turned on at moderation //

The viewing angle is howver off axis, scrictly cant modify the lounge (tier1 seating>7-8 ft tv,tier 2 seating > 17-18ft from tv) @ 30-35 degree left-right!

*On a side note, i want to say that I brought a 40"lcd few months ago & placed that in the same spot of where i 'm describing the crt tv installed, & i found horrible problems with it,including false colours, worse viewing angles(tv couldn't even take a 35 deg shift),back light bleeds, non uniform screen etc,etc,...though it certainly didn't have reflection & glare.i duly returned the tv & again for the next tv @ this position, i'm eyeing only the plasma,& hence all these questions for clarification has cropped up,if the plasmas would suit me fine?

This question is primarily for the plasma boys to answer, who can better relate to my situation,...still however any1 can chip in fine!

TIA for all the answers! :)

I am saying from my experience with Panasonic 42" vierra I owned 2 years back.
Plasma tvs are not good for well lit places as there is glass on it that reflects light.
And I do not think that Samsung has quality that is of Panasonic or Pioneer Plasma Tvs have.
this is my personal opinion and things may have changed since I owned (and sold) my Panasonic.

Edit: on side note Plasma tvs have very wide viewing angle and colors are also very natural.

some reviews said d550 more reflective than last years c550.even c550 picture washes out in bright ambient light
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1304494&page=75

The issue is plasma generally dont have the extra brightness to punchthrough ambient light and reflections. (if more bright manufacturer can use a better anti reflective coating), but cannot beat the plasma PQ in a dark room, but the pq adantage is lost as the ambient light increases( atleast in the case of my tv- c550)

In my experience the natural/ sun light affects more than flourescent
pana v20 was reported very bright in this forum

There is strong reason to buy LCD or Plasma(over CRT) that is high definition content.
There is no way any CRT tv can beat full HD content on 42" or 50" Plasma(or LCD/LED) tv.

I am not a Plasma Boy .. and I am not a Girl either  I am the Little Red Devil himself actually! :D But let me chip in ...

I purchased a brand new CRT TV this month because :

1. I might need a second bedroom TV screen a few years down the line and don't want to spend 60K for casual/occasional/rare viewing - that too for a 2nd TV.
2. I lost interest in watching home videos years back and somewhere I began feeling the poor PQ of LCDs was also largely responsible
3. When considering what TV to buy, an LCD/Plasma was automatically disqualified like an old timer rejecting modern technology, kinda mentality (Spit!). :D
But I have to confess - I decided that only a full OLED TV may be worth my money and buying CRT now helps me in the waiting game for prices to crash. :licklips:
4. I love certain kinds of geometry (curves included :)). I hate 16:9 screens - a 16:10 screen could have tempted me. But honestly now after using a 16:10 monitor for 5 years,
I am not too happy with 4:3 as well. :(
5. I hate watching SD content on HD screens at their fixed 1080p resolutions. I think the pixels need to be larger for SD content to look good?
6. All the reasons you found CRT superior tops my list as well :ohyeah:

Edit:

(Actually make this Reason# 1)

7. Most downloaded p0rn is not High Definition :D

So I got the brand new SomaSagha 29" D650 100hz TV that takes care of irritating 50hz flicker as well. PQ is brilliant with a rupees 400/- 75ohms (promised) Chini component cable.

I hope you can gobble all the reasons I gave - if not, try swallowing ... :D

PS: Please give me full marks for writing this essay.

i think u guys r forgetting to take into a/c one imp thing....my room environment & settings here(quite dark down here for daylight ambience if curtained up) & lights off'd or behind light @night-time).......& to focus on one more thing my viewing profile too.....this new replacement would be more of a movie viewing tv(3d too) which primarily would contain hd viewing,(70-80%) & far less a normal sd viewing tv(20-30%).i have got a 32"Sony cx420 lcd in the other room primarily for that!

* make no mistake, my 10 year old crt is still running perfectly, giving splendid vibrant life like pictures, full of rich depth(must have infinite contrast),awesome colours in the sd viewing & also for downscaled Hd/full hd viewing over component from my pch which is like 100 times better in its core Pq ! what i want is really is for a hd/full hd crossover to do justice to my expected hd shows & cinemas from my pch & also a bd player(in pipeline few days latter) & lcds as i said, didn't fit the bill!

Having said that i already demoed a 51"d490(720p) a few days ago in the showroom & found it rather reflective /shinny in the strong ambient daylight i saw the tv...however cant guess similar for d550(1080p), having not seen it personally. However i can only assume that the reflection & glare would be far lesser in a dimly bright room,...but that's at best my assumption only!

so now how will the plasma stakeup against the crt in my case?

if your room is dark ,then the title question is irrelevant. any plasma is plenty bright for a dark/dimly lit room

A brighter TV is needed only where ambient light is on a higher side. For highest brightness, LED TV's will top the list generally...

well in that case,i can say, viewing conditions r not ideal always & that's the principal essence of enquiry/clarification for plasma brightness & the problematic glares in less than ideal condition!...my crt also reflects, badly sometimes, but overall i can live with it & morover happily so!

the Panasonic v20D has a good anti reflective coating so in my living room with 4 x 11Watts warm white CFLs simultaneously lit at times I am still able to see the picture properly and it is not washed out. Picture setting Normal. If you want even more brightness then change the picture mode to Dynamic, will be as bright as those LEDs that blind your eyes in showrooms.

this picture is taken at bright room condition of my c550, the room is plent bright with doors open but ther is no direct sunlight light falling on screen, there is tubelight across the room and but i dont findthat an issue

thanks a lot for the photos friend but i think that's quite good(practically no reflection as i find in the photo)!...btw, how do u compare the reflections that to a CRT TV in the same lighting condition (i think u do or did have a crt)?

i'm bit confused of how much reflection/glare would change from a flashy brightly lit showroom to the confines of my dimly-low daylight ambient room!...can accept the Crt glare in that room( 1 reason being that Crt is bright enough) but practically confused on the plasma!...never owned a plasma & moreover it's a Big screen size which i think would make a difference than a 29"crt,....that's why the imperative confusion about which being the brighter display CRT or Plasma?

Should i take the plasma in or stick with the CRT( i think lcd/led-lcd doesn't do the job here) ???

btw,I''m quite satisfied with a 32" sony bravia cx42 lcd tv in my other room with high ambient daylight with lot more windows & would never think plasma could go in there!

you are not seeing reflection because c550 is very good in that department, but it seems this year samsung decided to abandon that feature for reasons cant understand(as per above link i posted), you can check yourself how true is that.infact i had a sony 29" crt and i dont think c550 any worse than that, may be only better considering the much bigger screen size. i had a choice of lg pk550 and c550,main reason for me not buying the cheaper lgpk550 was its mirror like screen,

I have a Plasma ( v20) and a 25inch Phillips CRT, In terms of brightness the Plasma never disappointed me even though i have kept the brightness a tad lower than the default presets, also i found the brightness accuracy better in the plasma (like different shades of white where required) compared to my CRT. When my CRT displays white i find it little irritating to my eye(am not that old :P). But then nothing can beat CRT for normal SD and pathetic SD DTH broadcasts :P

About reflection, i dint find any problems as such, my set sits in my hall which has ample brightness, i have wooden roller blinds which allow 40-50 % light into the room even with that i don't see any reflections during daytime, at night even with t5 tube-light on i don't see any visible reflections, only when i turn on my yellow cfll right across the room do they appear on the screen. One solution to this is, keep you set at eye level whether you are wall-hanging it or placing it on a pedestal; this will reduce glare from overhead bulbs to a great extent and also spare you from the neck pain of watching TV from a hotel room like position, i see that most people hang their displays really high for aesthetic value but they forget that it is bad for the neck....

There is a catch here - CRTs are so bright that it is the viewers in the room that need an anti-reflective coating! :)

Generally you will see them glow in the dark as they watch T.V :ohyeah:

i dont know for sure if there is any AR coating in the d550, but while viewing it at showroom last, couldnot find much reflection on the tv in the high ambient light( many cfls- nightime) of the showroom! ...the tv was wallmounted highup!
So,onething for sure...watching it at nightime with cfls on,mightnot be as distracting as presumed..quite watchable!
