Will be going for EMT 950

Hopefully next month i will be going in for a EMT 950. I had considered the idler drives for a short while but gave it up in favour of the direct drive. Reasons were two fold. Idler drives have lot of mechanical parts. Need regular maintenance because of dust and humidity issues in India. Most vintage idlers need to be serviced really really well for the simple reason that over the years there would have been a lot of wear and tear. Secondly they are not as neutral, quiet or dynamic as the best direct drives. Idlers are noisier and have a fatter sound making them sweeter. I always prefer dynamics. I have been very happy with my 938. So have decided to up the ante with the 950.

How are you planning to switch between the two ?

Or maybe one in hibernation while the other plays ?

Do you anticipate a significant sound difference given your liking for Hindi music ?

I will be selling off my 938. On the net there are conflicting reports. Some say all EMTs sound same. Some say the 950 is better than 938. It's not about Hindi or English. The 950 motor has higher torque hence should dig deeper according to me. Only time will tell. Also the 950 weighs 70 kg whereas the 938 weighs 25 kg. Ideally the 950 has to be fitted in a console. Whether to go for the original console or get a wooden one built here is another decision I need to take

950 is the best direct drive that is there yet. I was planning to buy a 950 earlier but the fitted console and weight made it impractical for me to consider it.

No question. This is a 927 in Direct Drive form. Superb choice. I am similarly biased like you on direct drives vis a vis Idlers.

The 950 is a proper beast - easily the reference from EMT!

(you might have to break open your front door to get the 950 into your place!)

Congrats Prem ! I am sure this would be a great upgrade. Would this be from same person? If I am not wrong your present EMT was upgraded and serviced by ex EMT engineer. Isn't it ?

Have hit some roadblocks. Once its sorted out will get the 950. Till then its on hold

Brilliant choice Prem. Direct drives are highly under rated and taken to the cleaners by purists. But from all the TTs I've heard, they are the most pleasurable to listen to and most reliable too.
