You Favorite Stereo Amplifier

In fact given a chance i would go all Indian. Jacob at Rethm has been contemplating designing a turntable but has not found the time. In fact i was ready to commission a table from him. If he had agreed i would not have gone for the EMT.

The pieces I heard were very chunky looking metal stuff.
Cant find it on the net.

Ikon advertises a lot on HiFi News and Record Review mag. They definitely look interesting.

@prem: one would love to hear Audires but they don't even advertise their dealerships. So I guess the only way to audition them would be to go to Coimbatore. I would love to hear their new Maia bookshelf. It seems to be filled with some of the most exotic parts, not to mention their use of Accuton drivers. I have only heard their lowest model and that sounded very good to my ears. The coherence of a single driver speaker is something else!

@Dr Bass: are the Naims still in the realm of 'must haves' or 'already haves'? What about speakers? And I recall you raving about the Platine Verdiers?

Yes i missed Harbeth. I think there is also a huge following for the BBC speaker sound. Guess Harbeth, Spendour all probably fall in that category.

What you mentioned about Pass Labs discussion in UK forum is very interesting. I have always seen that people strongly support their own countrys products. In US forums you will not have much discussion on Naim. There it will be Mcintosh or AR or the like. On a German forum you will find people staunchly supporting the German products. On iNdian forums we seldom discuss Indian products in detail or staunchly defend them. The fact is that Bhagwan after hearing so many amps and owning quite a few high end ones finally ended up with the Canasyas. No one discusses the high end speakers of Audire. I am sure they would be excellent. Rethm products too are seldom considered. I feel if we on our forums do not promote Indian products, who will?

Sir,
I agree with you;
We should.
a]
Listen to Indian Products
b]
Listen to Imported Products
c]
Decide which one is 'preferred'
d]
Buy the product that suits our ear & is liked by us.
e]
If that product happens to be Indian - brilliant !

Essentially, only if India makes products that are of an international quality & performance that is as good as any foreign product will I endorse it.

For me - the Cadence Canasya was that. I like the way it sounds.
It was better than my Gryphon Audio Design - Antillion Signature - so I lost the SS Class A Power Amplifier & switched to a 845 Tube based Power Amplifier.

I have a very simple policy - what ever plays well stays - I have no love for Indian - Americian - French - British etc. kind of products. I only care for performance.
If I find a speaker that plays better than my TAD - I will change my TAD - simple. Same goes for my Digital Rig. If I do listen to a component that can perform better than my dCS Scarlatti - the Scarlatti will go & that is certain !!!

I have yet to listen to an amplifier - except The Lars that plays better than the Cadence Canasya......Technically Speaking, I should change the CC's for The Lars - I wanted to - we could not come to a commercial understanding - sad - so I use the CC's [mind you - I happy with it] !!

;)

I did not discuss Audire & Rethm.

a]
I have never heard the Audire Speakers.
The people from Audire were to come to my place with the Stand Mount T & P Driver based Loudspeaker for a listen. They wanted to hear the TAD's
They spoke & never came.

b]
Jacob's speakers are great. I used to listen to them @ Audio Shows in India - many years back & last I heard him in Munich 2009 - MOC [I think] with Emille' Labs [South Korea]
After that I have not heard his products. Think there is to be a Dealer in Mumbai - so I heard;;;

A dedicated room in Mumbai either commercial or in some person's house should be way to proceed. That way a 'qualified' demo can take place & the product can be heard in the correct atmosphere - very very important.
Not just plonked in some dealers show room - without care & appropriate gear [amp / front end / cables] !

So I do want to listed to the MIA [Audire] & Sadhana [Rethm] !!
Some Day - Some Where !!

Fingers are X-ed;;;

Hi Bhagwan

You are very objective. This is a great quality to have. Hence the equipment comes first to you. Not where it is made or who has designed it. But this is not necessarily the case with a lot of others.

Also i agree with you that dealers must come forward and carry Indian products. Thats the only way it can reach out to people

though the discussion here is more about the so called 'high end' audire used to make pretty decent budget range speakers too.......
unfortunately according to a missive i received from mr sandeep nair of audire they have stopped production of their affordable audiophile product range..
i for one am happy that i went in for their speakers when they were still within the reach of my pockets....
my audire callistoes are very well made..they weigh more than 200kg between them and for the kind of music i listen they match the other components of my system perfectly..

Prem, I relate to your sentiments but I think it is not as simple as that. If you go one level deeper, products made in USA are in line with their tastes and suiting a typical American home, same goes with products which are made in UK, Japan or Germany. It is first of all made keeping in mind the music, presentation, taste and homes that most people of that country have in common. I think that is the biggest reason why we see such tremendous support and following of products made in one's own country in those regions. I dont think that happens with most of the products made in India. In the end it is targeted at the clients residing in developed countries. That is understandable considering the size of our hifi audio market. But that sentiment will not awake unless one connects with the product because it has that extra thing which is special about "Made in India". That niche-ness must be created in our products that makes it "Indian". Like Indian food and Indian music !!

Yes Dr Bass. You are probably right. I never looked at it from the angle that the equipment is not made from an Indian home perspective.

Home is one of the criteria, but musical taste is also an important factor. Americans like big muscular sound, Japanese are tone freaks, Germans are big time into Dynamics and UK is a lot about PRAT. Similarly the French and Italians also have a signature liking. Do we have an "Indian" sound ?

I guess since most of our Indian music is mid centric we are not too much into extremes. Its more about voices and tone and timbre.
