Da-Lite vs. Grandview....?!?

So its gonna be 106".. Here are the revised quotes i got....

I was in the same dilemma.
Even though in my ht room, the first row is going to be at 10', i am planning to go for 120" screen.

Reasons:
1. I am quite a bit into photography, pictures are best seen BIGGEST.
2. I have a 2.1 zoom on my projector, On a 120" screen i can zoom out and get a smaller viewing area when watching movies. Its not possible the other way around on a smaller screen.
3. on a 105' screen, the 2:35:1 and 4:3 videos will seem much smaller.

Just my inputs and what went into my thought process. I have already ordered a 120" Elite screen from US. (this can be the reason 4... lol)

i'm assuming the dalite would be...

easier to clean, last longer, show a better picture with more vibrant colors, and more detail.....

is that correct...?!? and would add more positive points of dalite over the grandview...

what would paying double get me...?

My projector has 1.1 zoom and i was thinking of getting a 120" screen on which i can project from 110" upto 120" with the level of level of zoom i have.

But i had a few doubts on which i would like to know yours & others thoughts...

- If i project a 110" on a 120" screen then i will have a certain amount of white area still empty.. i mean the image would be within the black borders unlike a 120" on a 120" screen in which case the picture will completely fill out the white screen area.

1. So how would the 110" image look on a 120" screen...??

2. Would projecting a smaller image on a larger screen nulify the effect of the black borders ? i mean the black borders are there for a reason right...?!?

Why is the Black Border Around a Projector Screen So Important?

So how would a 110" image on a 120" Screen play out...?

but tell me this, did you find anything missing with all your dry runs on the wall so far?

i wouldn't know man... i haven't watched much on a screen...

but i've been projecting on a slightly pink wall in my living hall ;-)

i suppose it's only gonna get better when i put a white screen....

Among the hard truth is that most of them will get carried away with a larger screen without realizing the infrasctructer missing in the form of room length, etc.

In my case too i wanted a bigger screen but had a room length of 15 feet, but view distance was only 12 feet, to achieve the desired result i broke my bathroom to get a bigger room length, more the passion for a perfect theatre, harder the decisions etc has to be worked out.

If one will not handle the things rightly, among the things what will happen is one will start going to a theatre for a movie but if one has the proper set up, there will always be better scope to watch movies at home, after all huge money is being spent to make a private theatre at home.

Vinay i agree with you on the same, my advice to fellow members, please don't get carried away with screen size as you need to look at lot of factors, before making the buying decision and most of the users here have spent a long time deciding what to buy and to prepare their HT rooms.

Viewing distance, height, dimensions of the screen are very important in any kind of setup.

Well i think it is simple that the quality of dalite will be better in all aspects over grandview after all they are the world leaders in home theatre screens. At end of the day it is a matter of budget and thought process.

I forgot to mention one big factor to consider while deciding on the screen size, and that is the light output from the projector. I went through home demos for various projectors. There are very few that can handle a large screen while still in their best picture mode (usually called Cinema or Theater), even when they are new. Most of the projectors loose a good number of lumen within the first 400 hours. If you are forced to use the brighter modes you are loosing on the picture quality in terms of lack of depth, poor colors and whitewashing of the near whites. If you have a screen >100", look for at least 600 to 700 lumen in the cinema mode. The performance section in the reviews at projectorreviews is quite useful. Though just high lumen output does not mean the picture is good (for instance data projectors have a high lumen spec). We even have some cheap high lumen HD video projectors that are popular due to their $1K pricing, but produce a relatively poorer video.

Yes, but given the fact that all of us watch films made in various aspect ratios there is no way you will have black borders all the time; irrespective of the screen size. If you are particular about borders, the only solution you have is to install a motorized masking system. It is worth it if you are keen on borders.

I have ordered an Optoma HD66 DLP Projector from ShopYourWorld few days back.
Need to get to the next steps. I live in Vizag and I have very few options about screens. I got a quote for a GrandView 16:9 92 inch CNV Series screen here in Vizag for Rs. 6,000 manual pulldown with insta lock. Hoping this is a good price. For the same series and size screen, the motirized version is Rs. 20,000.

Da-Lite is way too costly for me.

Please suggest if this is a good price or if there is a better way for me to get a screen - may be - ordering online...

i got a quote of Rs 11000 for Grandview CNV 106" with instalock. I went to the dealor and saw the screen. The quality and finish of the casing was really top notch. The screen fabric also looked good.

The instalock 3 second system was pretty good too. Overall the Screen seemed to be well made and of good quality. You should go ahead with Grandview if the dalite is crossing your budget.

I'm myself contemplating between the Grandview and Dalite but will mostly go for dalite. I have to go and see the dalite screen in person before i make up my mind.

Screen Selection

To compare the quality and other things about the screen there are various ways out but the best way is if the seller can give a live demo of 2 screen brands for at least 30 minutes, with in-direct light and without lights being on. This is how i selected my screen.

I have Grandview CNV 120" with 16:9 aspect ratio. I am very satisfied with it and my viewing distance is 16 feet.

I am using Anchor (Chinese) brand motorised screen with remote control of 120 inch size. The cost in Dubai is equivalent to about 20,000 rupees. My room is about 13 x 28 feet and using Epson TW 5000 full HD projector. The results are very good. I have seen demo of other expensive screens like da lite, and they excel if the brightness of the projector is less, by opting for a high gain screen.

are you noticing slight disformations going horizontally from down to top at similar intervals basically where the screen rolls.

i guess dushie also has a grandview.... can u guys comment on this....

i have had my grandview for 9 months now, its a manual pull down, till now i have not faced any issues.It still is the same the way it was the first day, no dis formations visible now.

I got a Grandview CNV 96" Manual pulldown. For some reason, I do see the edges folding in. Fortunately, the folded in parts are the black borders so no issues with the image. Any clues on if something can be done to avoid the screen fold in?
