It took me some time to get used to the interface as well. Try playing around with different Listening modes. Being a first time AVR users, it took me some trials and errors on listening mode to figure out what every listening mode does.

Also, if you your speakers support 80Hz then configure the speakers manually for 80hz (THX). The auto calibration sometimes puts it to lower frequency.

Press the Receiver button on remote and then press the movie/tv button (red) to scroll through listening modes.

If the source audio is 5.1 Dolby, it should show the dolby logo in red on the receiver display. If not then the receiver is not getting the proper audio source.

Also, you can use the display button to see the input and output fotmat that you are currently using.

I am using 7.1 Onkyo HT870 package and it is rocking my entire room when played at 50 volume level. The speakers are gradually opening up and sounding better and better. I have been reducing the volume level as the speakers are getting louder as I keep playing them. lol

Played Thor3D and Pirates of Carribean 4 3D and I was left gasping. The 7.1 sound processing was awesome.

I am still playing around with features and functions. :)

Hello,

Thank you for all suggestion ,yes i have tried all ,i doubt my speakers not very good one ,they are smaller and brand name shows Sony but i don't see model number am not sure these are orginal speakers ,any way i can live with them presently ,let see in future to get 7.1 good branded speakers then i can see the difference.

I recently got my Onkyo 609 last month and still doing the setup. I think I can help you. you can call me @ 973one86four92six. I would like to know the Ohm rating of your SONY 5.1 speakers.

I have got my new Onkyo NR 609 and have 5 satellite speakers. Did calibration by Audyssey, speaker distance / db power was not that accurate what i had in my pioneer. Corrected the values manually and seems to work like charm. I have Onkyp 150w Sub to compliment the setup.

Try to avoid selecting THX as this is specifically designed for THX certified speakers and stringent room settings. If you need any help do let me know.

heat issue still persist in 609 or solved?i can play more than 4 hours for my ht setup.609 get heat issue like 608 or solved?

I have played it at moderate volumes (40-60) for hours (more than 6 hrs definitely). It gets warm but cannot burn your hand/fingers (its slightly warmer than tata sky hd pvr). At higher volumes (60-75) it gets warmer but again it wont cause burns.
Haven't tested at volumes more than that as i need suitable speakers first!

I am using 608 for almost 15 months no issue watso-ever (I'd love to have a 609 though, anybody in exchange in return with some dough? Kidding:D)
I mentioned earlier on one of the threads, that almost all weekend, I play in 60-80 volume for music and movies in batches, sometimes overnight (my neighbors are too kind ... LOL) never had any heating issue, It is just warm to touch (which should be normal) Reason? The Receiver is kept in open or when I keep under the shelves I leave the door open.

@007india ,

Cross over set to 150 for all speakers ,my speakers are 6 Ohms.

I think your speakers are a major weak link. You do have a subwoofer, right?

any info above 80 Hz is easily localizable, meaning you can identify from which speaker the sound is coming. By having a crossover at 150, meaning the info which should be localizable is coming from subwoofer. That's going to make the surround sound and even front stage sound weird. Not saying you should upgrade your speakers right away or near future, but just stating that its a limitation in your setup at the moment.

Also, because your speakers can't go below 150, you should not use any "direct" or "pure audio". You always have to use the subwoofer.

As for current setup: Tow in the left and right front speakers. Make sure the tweeter is at ear height. The front of the speaker should be totally clear of all the other objects and there are no nearby walls or other objects that can deflect/change the sound. Tow in the front left and right speaker, to the center of the listening position. Get a measuring tape and measure each speaker from the center listening position. Then cross check the distances with those setup by Audyssey.

Onkyo recommends about 8" free space above the receiver and back as open. If that's an issue, get a simple USB powered laptop cooler and place it on the top of receiver. It does a good job in cooling down. :)
