Best DVD player iwth USB

Am able to jump to a particular time for the DVDs. However this isnt working for divx/xvids.

Cmon guys, isnt there anybody who can solve my problem here? Is there anyone here who has 5996 and who I can PM or call? I am not able to understand this simple problem of jumping to a particular time for divx/xvids being played out of discs or HDD. Even the manual doesnt explain how to use the 'display' button for divx/xvids. It shows it only for DVD/VCD/SVCD.

I am depressed over this

Dear Forum members,

At last I foun a forum which has indians discuss Music and Sound am I glad...

I am caught in a dilemma here. I did a lot of research on the net and thought of going in for the Samsung 1080PK, however when I reached the local Samsung dealership which claims to be a company owned retail outlet said that he has been asking for 1080 PK for more than 4 months now and it seems Samsung does not have them. The other HD models were not available either. Something that they call the Pebble which is a neat piece of design with black piano finish was the second option because I have a Samsung 37 inch LCD panel. However, visits to a few more stores also did not find the Samsung HD models.

However, a local store had 2 models in Philips with Full HD upscaling and HDMI Out, USB everything that I was looking for. The model names are

DVP5986K - Rs. 4000
DVP3996 - Rs. 3800

I was not able to gather a lot of info on these models from the outer box so I asked him that can I check the details on the net and come back tommorow.

When I checked the Philips India site both these models were not visible in the presently sold models.

What should I do. Should I keep looking for the 1080PK and buy that for Rs.5000 or just pick up the DVP5986K and be done with it?

Need some opinion here.

Sambit Misra

Hi all, I am back after a long, long time. Was just checking out the forums, when I saw Samson about to commit the same mistake that I did, so here goes:

do NOT consider Samsung 1080PK. I had purchased the same, and it's a terrible player. Before Sammy owners pounce on me, I'll tell you the biggest problems with it:

1) Very finicky with USB drives. Sometimes plays the drive, sometimes doesn't (same drive). Specially if the drive has a number of files.

2) Hangs often. Yes, it actually hangs, and then you can't even switch it off. You have to disconnect the power.

3) The biggest issue I had was that it doesn't handle anamorphic files very well. Most movies that I had that were in 2.35:1 format appeared stretched (while Philips and LGs played them beautifully). The Samsung dealer I threw it back at claimed that it was 'intelligently filling up the screen': there's nothing intelligent about stretching the hell out of video making things look thin and tall. Made the main car in 'Cars' look like a Beetle. It's not a feature you can switch off.

The dealer was then kind enough to get me a LG DV388... he made a bundle, because the LG was way cheaper, and he pocketed the balance, but I was happy that I got a player that plays everything I throw at it. I have used multiple external HDD, including two designer Lacie's that I have, and they all work great (it takes a little time if you have a lot of files on the drive: even 2-3 minutes if you have hundreds of movies, because it browses thru all folders and makes a list first).

The one thing that I miss from the 1080PK was it's HDMI-CEC, which worked well with my PV8, and the LG remote does not control the Panny. I can, however, get a cheapo universal remote for less than 1500 (though the exercise does me good :) The Philips 5996 is supposed to be very good, and I waited a long time but it never became available (at least till I bought the LG). The difference between the 5996 and 5986, from what I remember, was that the 5996 had a much better remote (with HDMI CEC as well).

Hope this helps!

I have a 5996 - currently with philips service to replace faulty card. It should be back tomorrow/ day after.
I have personally never used "jump to time" as ffwd is what I use normally.

DVP-3996 doesn't upscale, but has all the bells ad whistles. If you need upscaling, go for DVP-5986 or if budget is not a constraint, consider Pioneer 610.

I have a DVP-3996 and have to say it met all my expectations so far. Bought a Pio-610 based on recommendations here, yet to set it up.

Guys both 3996 and 5996 have dvd upscaling capability. Just to make my point please check out its spec

The model 5996 has the below mentioned additional features other than the ones present in 3996.
1. It can play some extra divx formats.
2. It has Music CD ripping facility.
3. Comes with a gold plated HDMI cable.

Anyways check out the specs for the same
1. http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp3996_94/dvp3996_94_pss_eng.pdf
2. http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp5986k_96/dvp5986k_96_pss_aen.pdf

Apart from these there are no differences between 3996 and 5996.

One more point go for philips and not samsung and LG.

The 5996 also has DTS support which the 3996 lacks, which is significant if you're planning to hook it up to your HT

My box-packed 5996 that I bought from Croma, Pune didnt come with any gold plated HDMI cable. Are you confusing this with the LG one?

I waited to check it out before I posted. I have the 3996 (bought for my MIL) and it has DTS support. I ripped my Transformers DVD in DTS and played it via the USB and it does support DTS.

DVDP - AVR via digital coaxial cable.

My friend has a 5996, i have tested by connecting a Maxtor portable 250 gb hdd to the usb port it works fine, It draws power from the port and as it is USB2 never faced any issues only catch is that the hdd has to be formatted in fat 32 partition.

The same hdd does not work with my lg dv388 .

Reviving this lovely thread once again.

I was planning on buying a 16gb pen drive as I lost my old 8gb pen drive for around 1400 bucks , but instead I am now thinking of buying a 320 gb portable wd hdd . You are getting 20 X the storage for around Rs 3300 .i.e, 2.5 times the price. But then I remembered this thread and was unsure whether the Drive will support my LG DV 388 .

@Dushie - The maxtor portable was Fat 32 or NTFS format ? Are you sure portable HDD's will not work with DV 388 ?

So on what basis 610 disappeared? Most of the countries 610 is alive!Anyway nowhere 620 is mentioned IN fact if 610 will be discountinuing it is good opportunity to buy as there maynot be 620 and pio will sell "degraded" DVD to promote BD!!!

You can get passport with marginal price than 8gb PD & use your WDtv,why to worry.
Or borrow passport & try with 388.Some body has mentioned in this thread that extHDD can be read by 388.

Yeah those were external powered hard drives !

I already have an external 1 TB Maxtor for WD Tv which is sufficient. I wanted something which was portable like a pen drive and for me the HDD is just an alternate to the pen drive . I dont want to spend any more on media than required as prices are falling every day. Hence thinking of buying a 320 gb portable but just wanted to be sure that it works with all my devices.

I am trying to procure a portable drive thru a friend but that may take some time. Any info meanwhile would be greatly appreciated.

The prob is 388 is USb1.1 so not sure,pio/oppo comes with 2.0 so they support it.(portable laptop HDD)
Power of 1.1 is not enough & in Laptop needs another cable attached to diff USB.

620 shid follow 610 ideally....

Not ideally ...if you know how product management works..:yahoo:

Oppo is now showing 1 DVD player and Pio US site is not showing anything in 6 series!

Welcome to world of BD where comapanies will "kill" good DVD players to promote BD ( The way high end CRT's were strateically killed by sony !

Maybe 610 is last chance to owe V Good mass market DVD player-with SACD & DVD Audio!

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
