3D TV Recommendation.

Well, there are so many factors to consider while buying a TV - that it is difficult to say that "Plasma TV is the best" or "Led TV is the best" - in all situations. Plasma 3D TVs may be good as regards picture quality , but they are active 3D TV that use shutter glasses. I have to wear specs - and that rules out plasma TVs if I want to enjoy 3D - since I cannot wear active shutter glasses over my specs. For me, the best solution will be passive 3D TVs like LG, since they also provide clip on passive 3D glasses. What I mean to say is - Horses for Courses.

Most of my family members including my mother and other friends didn't find any difficulty in wearing Samsung's active glasses over their prescription specs. They are built in such a way to make for comfortable viewing. Only issue is, it's not covered on the sides, so you will need to switch off the lights to darken the room.

Otherwise, active 3D, as far as I've seen, has excellent depth and pop-out! My friend who has a Passive 3D LED TV also felt the same. He said the LED passive 3D has less depth and more pop-out. He felt, in Plasma Active 3D, it's more balanced.

Another factor to consider is Headache. Many people including myself experience headache or eye strain on active glasses. I have samsung 3d tv and apart from few exceptions while playing games, I have hardly used 3d content due to same reason. Thus to me passive 3d is very much preferred option.

Suggest you take extensive demo on active 3d tvs, spend at least 15-20 mins watching the 3d content with active glasses and if you don't experience any ill effects do consider it.

From pic quality perspective, Plasma 3d appear slightly dull at "normal" contrast / brightness ratio. I did not experience same on LCD/LED tvs.

Well, It's almost a month since I had got my LG LM8600 and I am satisfied with the overall PQ of the TV. Though I haven't watched much 3D contents on the TV but watching movies like Life of Pi is a wonderful experience.

Although i cannot say with certainty, i do not think that active 3d will have more pop out than passive 3d. That will depend upon the movie and it's effects.

Yes.It is true that the effects depend on the movie. The problem of people who buy 3d tv is that they feel that they have a right to demand that everything should pop-out(and virtually fall on you!).They dont care which movie it is. Instead of enjoying the added depth to a full hd picture, they would all the while waiting for something to fall on them.

I recently bought IMAX Deep Sea 3d bluray and watched on my panny st50.
"Stunning" is lesser a word to describe the effect. The picture places you right in infront of the colourful creatures. The very first scene when a ocean wave races towards you will leave you breathless!
Now I am not talking about "pop-outs" or cheap thrills here.

BTW I tested the same on HX850. The picture and colors were NOT as believable as my panny. Saw motion issues using with ps3/panny bdt220. Also a slight tilt of head caused instant issues.
What I would like to say is plasma in my case produced a far more believable and engulfing experience.

Thanks.

I have also placed order on IMAX deep sea 3D and IMAX space station 3d. Should get them by next week. Prometheus 3d was painful with headache effects. Not so with Hugo 3D.

Am not sure about which has more pop-out. Passive or Active. I need to see a 3D movie on a Passive 3D set to verify.

But I watched Sammy's Adventure: A Turtle's Tale, and there is a scene where a snake comes near. Even if we sit 8 feet away, the snake appears to be 1 feet away from our eyes. That's the best bit of pop-out I've ever seen of all the 15+ 3D movies I've seen. For depth, the IMAX 3D movies simply excel! Haven't watched Avatar yet. So, I feel Active 3D does have good pop-out. But I've heard that the amount of 3D effect that is perceived varies from person to person. :)

Well, there are 2 groups of people. People who prefer depth and there are people who prefer pop-outs. :) When we show a demo of our 3D TV to our friends, we never show them movies which have depth. We tend to show scenes which have good pop-out effect. I feel the Americans love depth in 3D and we Indians love pop-outs. I don't dare to generalize. At least the majority of Indians love 3D that way, I feel.
Of course too much pop-out would cause nausea. So pop-out should not be used in a gimmicky fashion but used only when it's required for the screen. Eg. the floating lantern scene in Tangled to create an immersive experience.

You should check out IMAX: Under the Sea 3D. It's very good. Also Tahiti: The Ultimate Wave 3D.

Yes. I agree. Nothing beats the Plasma experience. Be it 2D or 3D. :)

Is IMAX: Deep Sea 3D rated more highly than IMAX: Under the Sea. I thought 'Under the Sea' was more popular. The Potato Cod fish scene is famous for its 3D effect. :)

Haven't watched Prometheus in 3D yet. After your experience, I think I won't :) The movie didn't work for me. Aliens was far superior.

Waiting for The Hobbit in 3D :)

I liked Prometheus as a movie. I didn't like the 3D aspect. I watched the movie again in 2D and enjoyed it.

I kinda liked it too, except for the last 15 mins. I'm surprised about the 3D aspect, since it was filmed with 3D cameras. Guess there's lot of learning for Ridley before the sequel comes. Anyway, will check it out.

Space station 3d is out-of -stock on flipkart. Saw the movie 3 times in IMAX.
The first scene where you see the blue planet below you was breathtaking giving a real feel of being in space.

Thanks for your suggestions dude. Will Tahiti be too much of computer graphics?

As I read in some article related to 3D, if all the movie is doing is showing people throw pies at you, then it is not 3D, but gimmicks. While pop out will thrill, the real 3D experience means immersive rear depth, outstanding front reach and good use of the techniques. And lest one forgets, a movie should tell an enthralling story. It is on the last count that Avatar falls way below expectations.

I find that animation movies have good 3D.

Nice to see a lot of back and forth over 3D TV choices ! My own humble two cents are invested with passive 3D TVs for two reasons - one, 3D watching is smoother and comfortable, and two, the passive 3D glasses are cheaper to buy and replace - and maintenance free!
