All That Jazz ...

Hi Everyone,
I found this gem of a performance. Pls listen with headphones on. A unique ensemble includes two harps, two accordeons, along with the ubiquitous guitar(maybe a stratocaster), an upright bass and a clarinet.
This ensemble is really on fire. My musician friends on social media were delighted hearing this.

Enjoy.

Some new age jazz worth listening 🎧
Love the Japanese instrument "wagakki"

Sean Smith Hi Sean, TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI is a female groove band formed in 2018 in Tokyo by three Japanese session musicians, Emi Kanazashi (keyboard,vo), Juna Serita (bass. vo) and Yuriko Seki (drums, cho). Based on 60' & 70' style jazz.

The problem with Tokyo Groove Jyoshi is that I end up seeing Juna Serita more than listening to actual music. Very distracting.

Listening to apple music today.
The marriage of jazz and Indian music makes plenty of sense: Both traditions rely heavily upon improvisation. Modal jazz of the ‘50s featured extended solos in a setting akin to the melodic modes of Indian classical music. While some of the earliest blends of the two traditions in the ‘60s came from jazz musicians—such as John Coltrane—who either applied ornamental qualities from the subcontinent’s music or embraced its spiritual qualities. Over time parallel studies yielded more substantive fusions. Practitioners like John McLaughlin began to incorporate instruments from India or to use traditional ragas as compositional forms, forging a vessel for beguiling two-way exchanges.

Listen on streaming but I don't mind 😉

Wagakki Band, BabyMetal, Nemophila, Band-Maid & Mary's Blood are also one hell of Japanese bands. Very impressed with Wagakki band's spot on accuracy & timing.

I really like them because they have very good covers of a few Crusaders numbers.
Also check out "Head Rock" and "Funky Stuff"

Thanks Jayant. Funky Stuff is one of my favorite albums.
I have been favoring Japanese jazz for a long time now - jazz funk being one of favorite genres.

Funky Stuff is getting a fresh reissue and is bound to fly off the shelves. If you're looking for a copy:

Thanks but I have gone completely digital for the best part of 12 years now.
But for anyone with a vinyl rig - pick this up blind. Great stuff!

In the lead up to our Paris vacation, mrs.coaltrain googled ‘dinner cruise on seine’ while my search had the words ‘cd’, ‘store’ and ‘jazz’.
The two I shortlisted for a visit were O’CD and Paris Jazz Corner. Both were pretty disappointing; smaller shops with a mediocre selection of used CDs that were around 10-12 euros each. Both stores had a decent quantity of vinyl, though I didn’t check the quality.
Then, a few days before leaving for home, I decided to take a different route from our hotel in Saint Germain. That’s when I hit the jackpot with Gibert Joseph. Very large store with a great selection of CDs and vinyl, with some amazing offers to boot. The jazz section, in particular, was loaded with some good stuff.
Some of the albums I picked up were recommendations I received in this thread, so ‘Merci Beaucoup!’ to all here :)

Great collection, congratulations @coaltrain
Don't miss the dinner cruise though. And remember you can always prepay excess baggage ;)

What a coincidence, I was in the Saint Germain area last week. No CD hunting though.
Cheers,

Then I highly recommend checking out the Wamono series by 180g Records. Especially volume 1 which has some killer Japanese jazz-funk. Volume 4 is also incredible with shakuhachi and koto funk. The other two volumes are straight Japanese funk and soul with not a lot of jazz but still really good.

I couldn't agree more. Funky Stuff on vinyl sells for silly money on Discogs and a reissue like this will get scooped up very fast - is a steal at that pre-order price
Just pre-ordered from this site. Thanks! I cancelled my pre-order from Juno. While it was cheaper there, UK import duty prices are crazy now so I think this would be the cheaper option.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
