Q. What do Van Helen’s ‘Jump’, Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ and Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’ have in common?
A. They’ve all been transformed into ‘Jazz Vocal’ tracks, if you can believe it!

If you’re a fossil like me, chances are 80s pop is one of your guilty pleasures. In which case, do check out the album below, available on Apple Music and Spotify. You haven’t heard it all until you’ve heard ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ in a jazz setting :)

Isnt that how jazz was, is and will be ? Many many many referred to as “jazz songs” have their roots firmly in popular music which was then Jazzed up. Unless a tune is composed by a jazz musician e.g Moanin and then lyrics are added to it which they were.

Very true! In fact, this is not the first time MJ has been covered. Miles did a version of ‘Human Nature’ way back, as well as Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Time after Time’. Nevertheless, it’s pretty weird to hear Van Halen in a jazz setting :)

Tsuyoshi Yamamoto doing a Streisand movie song. Really like his take though it never strays too far from the original melody.

That could be termed as “nouveaux jazz rock “ 😂

Cannonball Adderley albums have such propulsive energy and each one seems as good or better than the other. This one is recorded live at the Mannehole. Spoken intros and outros by Cannonball to all the songs. He says after Work Song, "Brother Nat, you see, he comes from a good family". :)View attachment 70989
True, Nat and Joe. And the intro for mercy mercy mercy is as famous as “I have a dream” !

Up until a few years ago I thought Lonnie Smith and Lonnie Liston Smith were the same person. The fact that they both played the keys didn't help 😬
Truth be told, I’m still confused :)
I don’t have any of his albums as a leader, but have him on a few Miles albums, Kirk’s ’Now, Please Don’t You Cry, Beautiful Edith’ and Turrentine’s ‘Sugar’.
