All That Jazz ...

Stumbled upon this list a couple weeks back.

Have been listening to the albums since. This is my pick of the whole set -

Cool list.
A refreshing change from the usual suspects in every Jazz Top Ten: KoB, Love Supreme, etc.

Blue Note’s Rare Groove series really lives up to its name, with some hidden gems in the lineup. Below are a few of my favourites.
Most of the albums feature organ prominently, hence the classic chugging ‘groove’. Easy Walker and Down With It are the exceptions, but are no less ‘grooving’.

Sax
This one is analogue production prestige series.
Saxophone Colossus was first recorded and produced by Rudy Van Gelder on Prestige way back in 1956. The first US pressing is by far the most valuable. If you can share the matrix stamping on the run out, I can help you identify the release and the perceived value. Mine, I just checked, is a 1976 Japanese pressing that was issued only once. It has a valuation of about 50 Euros, if the sleeve and media are in VG+ or mint condition, which my record is in.

What a coincidence!
Last weekend, I realized that I didn’t have Coltrane’s first album in my collection. Managed to find the same on Amazon India and it just arrived today.
While not as widely celebrated as his later work, there’s still some good stuff to be found in the Prestige years.

May I know your top 5 Coltrane albums ?

Superb Album. Thanks Nikhil ans Sameerkumar.
Worth the vinyl version for sure.

Two great RSD jazz reissues I picked up recently.

Harry Whitaker's Black Renaissance: Body, Mind & Spirit is a jazz-funk / soul-jazz gem. He played for the likes of Roy Ayers, Roberta Flack and Eugene McDaniels and used those funds to record a stellar album with the who's who of the scene including Woody Shaw, Azar Lawrence, Buster Williams, Mtume and Billy Hart. No label in the US wanted it so he sent the tapes to Japan. They released it without giving him a dime. It's only the later reissues that actually paid the artist.

Albert Heath's Kawaida on the other hand is some top tier spiritual jazz with an all-star cast including his brother Jimmy Heath, Herbie Hancock, Don Cherry and Ed Blackwell. Mtume and Buster Williams feature on this recording too.
