Aramex Shop & Ship - Get anything from US/UK Toooooo much cheaper than Borderlinx

Well I read the entire thread and still could not figure out, how is the Duty charged and calculated ..... call it my distraction while reading the thread (watching the match as well :D) but how do I come to know, the final duty that would be levied on my product. Shipping charges is been discussed in detail, but nothing about duty .......... can anyone clear this for me before I start some shopping ..............

For electronics I was charged 30%, i read that some one else got charged 20% on similar electronics and also saw someone posting 1% for cell phone but please keep in mind that customs duty (cleared through Mumbai mostly) is very uncertain and unpredictable, if you are lucky you will pass out with loww or no customs otherwise you will need to pay. CD,DVD, Books, Cables / Wires are not charged by custom at least not for the ones I ordered and received. I am planning to order a pair f speaker stands// will post when i get in finally in my hands.

Customs duty (max 30% as per my exp) depends on the customs guy who is handling your shipment .. this is a fact.

Dudes,
dunno about other states, but Maharashtra Municipality (BMC) additionally charges Octroi over the duty amount charged by customs. I recently recieved a notice from them for 10 LP pacakges!!!!! A whopping 20K!

so, be aware of the rules.....

Thanks haisaikat, for the information, this means there is no way to actually know the final price of the product ordered, I'd say this lands up as a major drawback for this kind of shopping as against to like shopping from 20North, where nothing is hidden or left on chances, all the shipping and the duty is calculated right at the point before you place the order.

About CD/BDs I usually prefer Amazon.co.uk where the shipping is just 3.5GDP to india and as you said no duty, it would not make sense to ship it to amarex and then to India.

At this point I am not sure how using Ship and Shop seems benificial as compared to say shopping from shopmyworld or 20th North ......

Slight correction mate..
till now, i have never had to pay shipping to Amazon UK.
Only this weekend I ordered some blurays for which I was billed lesser than the listed price (as at the time of billing VAT was not applied) and shipping is free when the total is 25 GBP or above

State government officials tend to slap charges illegally even if the charges are not applicable many a times. You have to consult an taxation expert and fight it out for a refund sometimes.

No Cheers :)

Sam,
You are right, may be what we can do is if you have first hand exp with 20north and shopyour world you can share a few experiances so that we can easily compare the benefits and grey areas of such services. If you are ordering dutyable products like electronics then we have to see who offers least price and VFM shipping with guarantee of product reaching your hands.

and shipping is free when the total is 25 GBP or above

You yourself answered your query, shipping is only free for orders above 25GDP that too is applicable for couple of months, I am talking about the usual shipping for CD/DVDs/BD for which it has always landed around 3.5 .......

What is the exact model number ...... ???

my shopping process is secret [only for close frenz] and model i already mentioned

On ebay.com, Samsung Vibrant and Samsung Captivate are being sold. These are also called Galaxy S. Both have 4" Super AMOLED screen and have almost similar specifications to our Indian Samsung Galaxy S i9000 (Vibrant is 100% same I think).

These are locked to the network (AT&T mostly) but the unlock codes are easily available on the net and they can be unlocked in less than 5 minutes.

These phone are available for US$ 200 - 300 (slightly used mostly). One has to actively search and bid on ebay.com and people have got brand new phones for less than 10k. Add custom and shipping to it and you can have it here for less than 12k.

One needs to see the description carefully and see the seller's ratings.

Just to add: Vibrant is very similar to Indian/UK i9000 but doesn't have two cameras. Captivate looks much different than Vibrant and Indian/UK i9000, and has a steel finish body (I personally like it a lot)

My experience with Aramex has not been that good. I recently ordered two hard disks costing USD140 from Amazon. I had to pay local taxes as the warehouse is based in NY. When the shipment was sent it was incorrectly classified as Electronics as faced by others. I got a shocking Rs. 6400 customs duty + approx Rs 1500 shipping charges for an item costing USD150(incl tax).

The I wrote to Anuradha saying most of the folks got customs duty as 0% and the classification is incorrect, she accepted the mistake and then adjusted the customs duty to approx Rs.1600 saying the customs duty is 15% for Computer Accessory. The amount was no where close to 15% of the overall cost. I again wrote back to Anuradha asking her to give me a calculation based on which she arrived at the customs duty. She explained me that the duty would be arrived based on cost+local taxes+ Shipping charges, which I accepted is correct. Based on the calculation the customs duty got reduced to approx 1200. I asked her why others got the waiver of customs duty, she said sometimes she ticks it off as gift as the overall cost is below Rs.10,000 and in my case she had not considered the same. During all this exercise I was talking to folks in Bangalore as my contact with Anuradha was only via email, the folks in Bangalore had absolutely no clue on what basis the customs duty had to be levied, the shipment had reached my house with incorrect customs duty being charged and I sent back the shipment asking for an explanation of the customs duty.

In case you would like to have customs duty waiver please write to Shop and Ship immediately after the item has been shipped so that the item is considered as gift(if customs assessed cost is less than Rs.10,000) in their paper work filing for customs duty. Also if you are shopping from Amazon consider the local taxes to be paid for shipping to warehouse. I find the shipping time is approximately same as that of Borderlinx, but the customer support for Borderlinx is much better and here it is only Anuradha who has enough knowledge of the whole process.

Thats is why sites like 20North and Shopyourwords seems better as everything is transparent and is calculated right at the time you order. I have ordered quite a few things including my Bluray player and I never have paid anything more than what was calculated at the time of placing the order ......

good or bad is just like judging between milkshake or morning tea ..

i ordered cell phone(SGS1) paid 900 Rs customs ..and pretty less shipping by aramex ..happy with it
cos i grabbed it in a down-2-earth price [always make sure u do the same]...

Also remember it is risky to order HDD or items that have HDD [magnetic],as there is chance of damage

do order on ebay.. you can ask questions with all good dealers and prices are always less
.. for me i will deal with amazon as last option, most leading stores also have have ebay stores for eg BUY and Beach Camera
my preference
smaller stuff aramex ,medium ->shopYworld like sites ,fragile items like TV,glass ware boardlinx
