Hi all,

I bought a new LG DV388 and connected it to my Panasonic 50X10. Though it is struggling a little to read from pendrives, the upscaling of DVDs are good. Even VCDs are playing well in the upscaling mode! But when I tried to play a downloaded HD divx file yesterday, it played only the music and not the picture, saying ' HD file not supported'! Is this not a HD DVD player? If not, what does the 1080p and hdmi mean? Sorry about my ignorance regarding these terms... It'll be helpful if anyone can explain.

Thanks in advance

Actually it is very misleading for the uninitiated...all the DVDP makers are branding their wares as HD DVD Player. In India, at least, this means that the player has an HDMI output and can upscale to 1080i or 1080p. It does not mean that they can play HD Content.

If you want to play downloaded HD content, there are several players in the market that can do this for you. The price ranges from 4K to 50K+. Brands you'd commonly hear are Xtreamer, WD TV, Popocorn Hour, PlayonHD.

Search the 'network and media streaming' forum to get more details and gyan on this subject.

Oh, That's all? So it won't play HD movie files?! Thanks for your fast reply spirovious. Is there any way we can play HD divx files, without going for a Bluray player?

you will have to buy an HD-Media-Player like Xtreamer Or WDtv Or PlayOn

Thanks soulforged. I'll try to get one of these players mentioned.

Also include Seagate HD media theater. Most of this kind of n/w meadia players will play from a connected hard disc/mass storage instead of conventional DVD media. Am I right guys?

Whew!! What a thread!! It's really interesting and let me tell you I read this entire thread at one go. As a result my knowledge has vastly increased and my opinions have also changed somewhat.
I had posted elsewhere that my choice had been narrowed down to Philips DVP 3368/94 and DVP 3388/94. But after reading posts by ILLUSION I am now also considering the LG DV388. For one, the street price of the LG seems to be lower than that of either of the Philips models. But perhaps ILLUSION can help me out on a few points:
First concern is regarding the LG's USB 1.1 as opposed to USB 2.0 . Does this effect playback in any way? For eg. does it cause jitter in fast paced scenes? (if the only effect is slow speed in FFW or RRW then its not a concern). Reason I am asking is that when I play DivX movies through pen drive in my PS2's USB 1.1 slot then jitters are caused in fast paced scenes (for eg. the Quidditch match in the latest Harry Potter movie).
Second is whether the player supports direct MP3 ripping to USB from audio CD. (This is not a major issue, but in keeping with the Indian tradition of paisa vasool)
I also read in a post by frnd08 that the full screen features of LG DV388 are BAD. there's just one option in the 16:9 mode. so there's no way you can modify the size of the video being screened! no pan scan, no full screen, no original, no settings at all in the 16:9 mode!
Do you face similar issues?
Next question is regarding the sound output. I plan to use HDMI cable. For sound I plan to connect my PC 5.1 speakers directly to the DVD player's 5.1 output. Will this be possible? Because I read elsewhere that one particular Philips model cannot output 5.1 analog if HDMI is used. Does this issue exist in LG?
Also, I know that this is more a question of personal taste, but is the LG's upscaled image as good as similarly priced Philips and Sony models?
My last question is a more generalized one regarding DivX. Does the player upscale only DVD movies or does it also upscale DivX movies?
I know it's quite a long post with many questions but any help from you would be very much appreciated.
Regards :)
PS: Does the LG player have basic tweaks for colour, brightness and contrast settings? I might want to use this sometimes with my Dell 22" monitor via HDMI to DVI cable so I wanted to be sure.

HI Shredder,
I can answer only your 1st question confidently. USB 1.1 as opposed to USB 2.0 - does'nt anywat effect the playback. I have played hell lot of movies so far from pendrive/portable HDD (150GB partition/500GB), it takes pretty much time (30-40 seconds) to access the HDD (may be USB2.0 would do better here) and so is the FFD/RWD speeds. But playback is quite normal, no jitters!.

whether the player supports direct MP3 ripping to USB from audio CD. -- Very good question. Please let me know if you find the answer and succeed in this. I also need to learn to do this.

Final words, I bought LG388 thinking that LG is always "value for money" (my LCD 32" is also LG) and I WAS NOT WRONG. LG has done pretty good job! though its a new entrant into DVDplayers. It has met/exceeded all my expectations. The best is- it can access any mass storage device unlike some Sony/Philips/Samsung only limiting to pendrives.

I would surely recomment 388 player.

Thanks kaverao and spirovious... kaverao, since you are familiar with the DV388 can you please confirm for me whether the player has internal adjustment settings from where you can tweak the colour, brightness and contrast.

Not much explored the settings. However, after you asked today checked somethings in the setup.
Yes, i agree with you regd. aspect ratio. I went to Setup->Display->TVAspect it shows 4:3 and 16:9(defaulted) but doesnt allow me to select & change.

Also there is Sound settings options-->Speaker Setup-->2 ch(defaulted in my system since i conn to TV) & 5.1 ch. I didnt have a 5.1 speakers to try though i use HDMI cable for TV connection. so, could nt help you on this.

ANd as far as i looked at it, couldnt find any option to adjust the brightness/contrast etc. Anyway, I couldnt understand the importance of having it since your TV has it :-).

100% agree . Its been more than a year since I bought my LG and I am very much satisfied with it .

Now as far as pic quality compared with sony and other brands , I have a sony dvd player and I found LG to be better . But again pic quality changes with the model so my comment is purely based on the Sony NS76H model which I have . I really dont know about the recent sony launches.

Settings - well I really dont like to fiddle with the settings. I am too lazy to change the aspect ratio for images which are appearing as stretched under the 16:9 mode.

Upscaling - yes it upscales Divx Movies as well and the quality is pretty decent.

One last note here . I rate LG DV 388 as a very VFM player. Its strictly not fair to compare it with the oppos and the pioneers here . Best bang for the buck I must say but again I am not sure if any other recent launches are as vfm as that of LG 388 .

Colour Tweaks - Hmmm never used it so not sure

What about the foll players???

LG - DD 447
SAMSUNG - P490

BTW, I have a year old Philips DVD Player Model DVP3166 - takes hell of a long time to read off pen drives Movies especially. The remote is horrible with delayed reactions & you have to point it directly towards the player with in 3 ft distance.
Initially i used it sparingly to watch movies via pen drive & of course DVD's/Audio via TV Speakers, but after just turning a year, the sound card conked off, costing me 1k damages, the quality otherwise is rubbish, service guys nasty & overall I am pretty pissed off with Philips for its poor quality, I'm sure I will not buy a Phillips product again....

Another unhappy customer of this product:
