I am skeptical about this theory.I have read this theory in many forums. That is because there are unofficial firmwares available for philips which increase the number of character to 14 and more . Moreover LG DV 388 has the capability of reading a large number of characters , I think 20+, and it reads the same from Fat 32 format.

e.g. Check out this link FAQ for Pioneer DV-600AV. It has unofficial firmwares for Pioneer DVD players which shows 50 chars in file browser for Pioneer.
Yeah correct . The only reason for me to consider Philips now is beacue of the fact that somehow Philips is avery popularly discussed player in USa and UK forums . So there a lot of firmware hacks available for the same. But again all these upgrades are at your own risk !

I found pio dv 610 can play Data cds also.
i.e. you can copy data from VCD to CD and play .

diff between 600 and 610 is only 610 can play high resolution picture
does dv 600 have a usb 2 port, or is it usb 1.1 ?
No where it mentions the USB speed ..

Check this out it is 2.0 and it can play divx from usb. Pioneer DV-610AV - AVForums.com
I had also read somewhere else that even though the manual says only mp3 aac jpeg playback, it can ply divx files from usb.

I just tried playing both clips posted by Illusion on my LG DV388 player and they played perfectly through USB port without any hiccups. Picture quality was like as I find in my lappy (intel centrino).
I am not sure about so much confusion about going for a dvd player.. all u need to know is your needs.. if u want to play divx/xvid/divx ultra/3ivx formats all in one then maybe u need to wait else go for the player that supports max of the formats playback and thats it...
personally I didnt noticed any drawback of having USB 1.1 in LG DV 388 player except that the fast forwarding and rewinding of movie is not up to the mark.. but to counter that we have time skip functionality and hence u can skip the movie to specified time...
Regardig max characters read support - LG dv388 can read upto 56 characters long file name (as per manual). but i have tried playing a movie name 58 characters in length and it recognized and played it perfectly

LG DV 388 is supporting DIVX/XVID/MP43/3IVX file formats (as mentioned in manual) 
Illusion - I finally tested both tracks on the Samsung and both played perfectly well. I played them both off the USB and not through CD, but I would think the behaviour would be the same.

Took a 5 minute demo of both LG DV388 and Samsung 1080-pk each yesterday. Here are my views and opinions :-
Remote :- Samsung has a good chunky feeling remote , LG is more of sleek compact variety. Both the remotes had ok response. I will rate both of them as equal as far as utility is concerned.
USB Playback: Ok here is where LG is better. Unlike Samsung LG is not limited to reading 14 chars of the filename! It was being able to read a considerable part of the filename if not full. USB loading took less than 3 seconds in the LG ( Samsung was slower). FF speeds were the same for both. Ok now the main part ?? I had taken a mixture of files on my 8 GB pen drive. There were 3-4 Divx and Xvid movies, one entire DVD movie and few MP3??s. LG and Samsung played all of the Divx Formats with the exception of one which both could not read. LG played the DVD movie (Sarkar) also but surprisingly the Samsung was not being able to enter into the folder (Folder Name: Video-TS) . Now I don??t know whether reinsertion of flash drive would have worked but this was one major bummer for me!! Can somebody please confirm whether we can play DVD ?? vob files via flash drive in 1080-pk ?
Quality:- Here was the demo setup. LG was hooked to a 42? Phillips while the Sammy was plugged into a 42? Samsung LCD. I was at a distance of around 7ft from the Phillips LCD and at a distance of 4 ft from the Samsung LCD. (HDMI cabling for both) I played back my favourite Divx Movie in the LG and it looked good. But when I played back the same in Samsung I was shocked . The image was not as sharp and tight as LG .There was blurring in the face closeups. But again was the distance between me and the two TV??s a factor here?
Price:- LG Rs 3700/- and Samsung Rs 4200/- . Both of them have free HDMI cable bundled. The difference is hardly Rs 500/-.
Looks: Samsung definitely looks better.

The above impressions have forced me to look into Phillips 5996 before I decide. This is very simply for the fact that I don??t trust LG players. I don??t think there would be anybody in this forum who would be using a LG DVD player for more than a year?? I expect a min. life span of 3 years out of my player after which obviously one will have to upgrade to Full HD(maybe sooner but still)!!

Apart from being unavailable in most places, I was a little doubtful of the Philips 5996 given the mixed reviews of the 5992 abroad.
Finally settled for the LG DV 356 (little brother of the 388, minus the HDMI and 1080p which I don't need given that I don't have a high end LCD/plasma). Price: Rs. 3000, reduced to Rs. 2500 after exchanging with an old Philips DVP642.
In short, I'm very happy with the results.
I got a 500GB Maxtor drive, which I'd partitioned into two - first primary partition (id: 0xc) was FAT32 of 250GB and the other primary was an NTFS partition to be used as a laptop backup. Plugged it into the LG, which happily read the first partition and ignored the second, as expected, and played every file I threw at it (within reason, of course. All DIVX, XVID, etc. passed, though MJPEG didn't). Quality is very good.
I had some trouble creating the FAT32 partition. The Swiss knife program pointed to earlier in this thread didn't work with Vista - just died. Vista itself lets you create a large filesystem of a type called exFAT. No idea what this is, plus it had a weird partition id. So I turned to a nearby Macbook, which could be persuaded into doing the job with fdisk and newfs_msdos. Linux and mkdosfs will do just as well.
The LG came with some defaults which will surprise you if you run a humble setup of a conventional CRT TV: you need to change your TV to 4:3 from the default of 16:9, letterbox from the default pan-scan, and stereo 2 channel from the default of 5.1. Failure to do any of these may give you a very odd and distorted picture. Once righted, the picture delivered is of excellent quality.
I didn't find the fast-forward to be a problem, it's pretty decent. Certainly not a factor to wait for a USB 2.0 player.

Sorry for my long absence . I am baaackkkk ! Wow , lots of activities while I am away. First of all thanks to backbencher , I was nearly about to convert my old desktop into a HTPC for my DVD /DIVX/MP3 watching needs, when I came across a small forum which talked about the huge increase in power consumption one will have to encounter vis a vis the average DVD player. Again I was confused but after reading the fact that LD DV 388 can read from a 500gb hdd , I am happy !!!!!!! I am more than keen now to get the DV 388 and I already like the picture quality . let me talk to my ezone guy today and see whether they still have it in stock (+ HDMI cable free hopefully) !!
Edit : Called up Ezone they dont have dv388 in stock anymore and can expect stock only after the pujas !!! What a bummer

Well when I took a demo of dv388, i had loeaded a dvd movie on the usb stick. It read the dvd menu immediately and I am confident that it can play dvd movies(vob files) from the USB stick.

I copied the files from DVD to USB on my Philips 5986 - it plays the files but it is jittery - non watchable - I suspect it is the USB 1.1
