Hi I have never tried out HDMI with Analogs out so I dunnow whether the same will work simultaneously or not.
I dont think the DV 388 is HDMI CEC complaint. However I will check the manual and let you know.

Hi illusion,
My old Onida can output Digital coax & 5.1 analoge at a time.(no HDMI)
There may be audio option in menu to select either HDMI or 5.1.

Okay, I've dropped the requirement for DTS... after going thru my entire DVD collection, I noticed that only two of them had DTS tracks, and those also had the Dolby Digital anyway. Turns out that in the DVD standard, DTS is optional, and DD is required, so if I have DD only, things should be okay.
This kind of levels the LG and Sammy... Samsung has the definite advantage of HDMI/CEC, which is really handy, while LG has the advantage of long-filename support. Plus, the Sammy can be upgraded at home (by putting in a firmware upgrade disc that can be downloaded when available).
Another good thing going for Samsung is it's full-width cabinet (I have an LG currently, I it's small size doesn't "stack-up" well with my amp: not very important, but somewhat irritating).
Has anyone come across any files that didn't play/played badly on the either of the two (LG DV388/Samsung 1080PK)? And, what about the actual video quality? This would be the real clincher now, I guess. Also, does the LG play DivX 5/6 files?

You have got to understand that video quality is a very personal thing. It is basically what you expect from your dvd player. Why dont you demo both of them yourselves and then select the one to your best liking ? When I posted some demo clips both LG and Samsung Owners have reported the playback was of very good quality . Now good quality can be very relative , hence my suggestion to go and check it out for yourself .
DTS is very important. Maybe the DVD's that you buy in the future may have dts sound tracks. So why dont you also demo the Phillips in that case ? I think phillips has dts decoding !
LG can play Divx5 files . I am yet to try Divx 6 files.

Okay, I did something really stupid: neither the LG388 nor the Sammy 1080PK were available at the shops I tried, so when I reached a shop which had ONE Sammy left, I picked it up. Without trying it out.
First: it's not region-free (I'll have to wait till tomorrow to see if the guy at the shop is able to help with this). Anyway with a 1080PK who knows how to get this done?
Second: it's upscaling isn't very good: it's very 'fuzzy'. Also, all the 'cinemascope' divx I have (2.4:1), are not properly recognized by the player, and play totally stretched (full-screen, about twice the height of what they should actually be). Big problem. Is that an issue with the LG as well?
Thirdly: it doesn't play VIDEO_TS.VOB etc.: so all the DVD dumps that I have are wasted (is anyone with a Sammy able to play these?). My old LG used to play them fine.
The USB connect is also very finicky: it sometimes detects the drive, sometimes not (the first time I switched it on, it didn't detect my external HDD, and my heart sank). Usually, switching it off, taking any disc out, and then plugging in the USB works. Sometimes it gives an indication of whether it's loading, sometimes it doesnt (even tho it's actually reading).
The interface is *crap*... it's really slow to move around, even the menus and screens update slowly, as if they are being downloaded from somewhere. Everytime I play a divx with a subtitle file (and almost all my collection has them) it shows a list of subtitle files and wants me to pick one from that. That, though irritating, wouldn't be much of a problem if it wasn't for the fact that it only shows the first few characters of a filename, so when I put in my Godfather collection, it just displayed 3 "The Godfather".srt, and just cut up the number after that, so there was no way for me to pick the right subtitle for the right movie (which also shows truncated names). My old LG did this beautifully: it automatically matched the filenames of the movie with the subtitle files, and even allowed for a two-letter language addition to the subtitle name.
So, basically, at this time it looks like a bad buy. If the region-free thing doesn't work, I'm screwed (this is a totally unknown shop, and he's unlikely to take it back or even exchange it). Serves me right, for making an impluse purchase.

Hmmm... The 1080PK is notorious for its poor DiVX implementation. If you primarily watch only DIVX on your player, you have to look elsewhere. As 5996 is becoming available now, I think it is the best option among these three,

Main difference between LG and Philips are: Philips can play WMV (LG only WMA Audio), HD JPEG, DivX Ultra and above all it supports HDMI-CEC, which means you can control the DVD player from the TV remote.
there is no dvd player abroad also that plays mkv, there are few german players that do play hd divx, next year the new version of players that come out will support hd divx and will support mkv format.
as of now there are no players that support the same ..

Hi. I bought LG 388 Player after some analysis, looking at it plus points HDMI and USB. But quite disappointed after checking it, as USB doent work!!!. Went through the specs and found that the USB host is of a version 1.1 I guess no USB1.1 drives are found now a days. i tried my 4 years old 512MB pen drive and 2 years old 4GB pen drive and Unversal card reader so & so whatever USB drives available around. It said same answer to everything "NO DISK". that means the UDB port is literally useless and dummy!. Never expected LG to fool the customers like this. 
Somebody pls let me know if u had similar experience and how to solve this? Any workaround to use my pen drives on this USB1.1 port? Thanks in advance for any help.

Currently Using a Transcend 1Gb ,Transcend 2B and Kingston 8GB !! All work beautifully ( Touch Wood
!). I have watched nearly 40-50 movies ( all divx vidoe till date) and all of them have been through a pen drive. I think you are stuck with a faulty unit. Pls call LG Customer Care immediately ? had you gone for a demo before the actual purchase ?Illusion, I had taken a demo in Total mall (Bangalore). The sales rep had shown some movies, music using his USB on his demo piece. (Fact to say, he was unskilled to answer most of my tech questions, so it limited my research) Then i bought a new piece. I tried many drives its spending some time showing "loading...". Then says "No disk". After reading enough reviews, i learnt that the USB shoud be FAT32 formatted(is it correct and mandatory?) I'm not sure if my drive is FAT32 formatted or not! that might b 1 cause or else Faulty device! :-(. I will try formatting it today. Thanks for your reply. Have you tried connecting large sized HDD to it? i.e. 250GB or more? Please let me know if u have tried OR come across any reviews on it; since i'm planning to buy a 250GB for movie dumping.
