Hello experts,

I am in the process for building a HT setup for my new Home. I have not auditioned any till now. But surely will go for a hunt this month.

One basic doubt I have-
for a 11x18 room with 2 open doors and a window, will it be good to go for FS/BS.

my budget is 30-50 excl AVR.

Please help me choosing the first step :>

thanks

I like bookshelf monitors even in medium sized rooms, most frequently they do best at their specified frequency range. Floorstanders will require more careful positioning. If you are going to use the room as dedicated music room, then go for FLs. But in case of bookshelves you may require to factor in the cost of stands.

There is no correct answer to this one....

As a general thumbrule, bookshelves work better in smaller rooms and floorstanders better in larger rooms. But there are many exceptions to this guideline.

For a starter, listen to as many systems as you can. This will give you an idea about the kind of sound that you prefer. Then, once you start understanding your sound preferences, you can look for specific models suitable for your room size and tastes.

what will be your use?
music or cinema..
for cinema you can buy 2 bs confidently...later add sub..

for music to re create the full range....fs is better....thats personal in fact..
demo first multiple times to understand your liking..

within 40k there is kef/wharfedale 10/polk centre and bs to start with...

I would go for bookshelf speakers + sub.

Place the sub at the location where you get best bass in the room. With the low frequencies taken care of, you're free to place the bookshelf speakers at the location where they give best soundstage and imaging.

By comparison, a pair of floorstanding speakers can't be in both locations simultaneously (unless you're handy with a saw).

I am using a Sonodyne Sonus 2605 FS in a 14 x 11 room...14 being width & 11 being length...I don't use a sub for stereo listening...

If you are going to place the speakers in 18 feet width, then a FS is better in my opinion....

Mostly Movies (70%) and 30% music.

If you are more of bass lover, buy BS + a very good sub(Velodyne, Polk DSW series etc) if tight on budget. This way later you can upgrade to FS and keep your BS for rear sound.

For your room size I will advice FS though!

Try the Polk Audio Tsi300 FS. They can be placed comfortably within 5 feet of each other. They are also small in size compared to other FS. Try them at Pro Fx and then decide.

Mostly Movies (70%) and 30% music.

The most important piece for movies is the front centre. This is where most of the vocals are going to come from. The next important components are the front left and right speakers. If you are going to be investing in a sub-woofer to play the low frequencies, then it makes more sense to invest in a quality bookshelf and not a floorstander. Spend the least on the rear speakers. In fact, for the same budget, you could even go for a 3.1 setup (of higher quality) rather than a 5.1 (of lower quality). You can then add the rear speakers at a later stage when you can afford them.

Just my 2 paisas.....

thanks all for your valuable inputs.

Any more good 2.1+sub(BS) suggestions within my budget? Even I was thinking to add rear speakers at a later time.

For your budget, you could look at systems (i,e bookshelves, centre speaker and sub) from the following companies

- Wharfedale - either the 10 series or the 9 series (you may still get some stock of this) - have heard the 9 series and they are quite good for the money spent.
- Tannoy Mercury speakers - have heard these are they are quite good
- Sonodyne speakers - no personal experience with Sonodyne
- Polk Audio - though I am not particularly fond of the polk sound
- Lithos Acoustics - Nova or Q-10 - I have heard these are they are very good

There are many more well known brands in this prices range. Would request FMs to add more to the list.

you cant go wrong with wharfedales 9 or 10...
yes if 9 stock is avilable..get it...
best is demo...with your amp..

btw i have heard sonodyne avant centre with denon amp...fantastic at that price

i will suggest get sub later...to acomodate budget..

40k is for centre and fronts only...

I agree

Of all the components in a typical HT setup, it is the sub that costs the most. I think the logical flow for the OP would be to invest first in front speakers and centre speaker along with AVR.

Once you save up more money, get a sub. Save more, and get the final piece (rear speakers).

When you invest in the sub and rear speakers, try to get them from the same speaker manufacturer, and preferably from the same series. Helps to maintain the overall sound signature of the system.

BTW, I watch movies in a 2.0 setup (stereo speakers only), and I am totaly satisfied with the movie performance. But, I am more of a music guy than a movie person - so my efforts are more concentrated on the musics side of things! Also, my speakers have a 12 inch woofer - so no complaints about bass while watching movies!

Hi guys. I am also looking to build a HT slowly. I want to start with fronts and move on to others. For the fronts, I am planning to look at

1) polk rti a1
2) wharfedale diamond 10.1
3) MS avian I

Please suggest more to the above list. I am looking for bookshelf in the range of 15k. Can stretch to 20k if its reasonable.

for 15k...1 and 2 is exxcellent choice also listen sonodyne avant bookshelves

Thanks buddy. I will do that. Do you know if wharfedale 10.1 has placement issues. The dealer I met told me that it needs to be placed 6 inches from the rear wall, as its rear ported. Is 6 inches enough?

How is diamond 121 instead? is it good enough? Seeing its specifications, its nominal impedence is around 6ohm, but minimum is around 4 ohms. Will that be a problems when I connect them to denon avr 1713?

121 is 90db so more efficient.against 10 series 87 db i think..so good
in moderate vol nothing will happen relax.
but best is carry your 1713 and listen to 121 and 10 both and see which satisfies you

yes 10 is rear port so should be 1 feet away from wall....as room is small..why not 9.if any stock is avilable.
some persons like me non audiophiles will like the boost if 10.1 is placed near wall(i did this long ago in during school final when having a chepest multiplayer and 2.1 speaker set to boost up,placing them in exact corners facing walls....hehe)

Hi,

Can I assume that 10 series can not be wall mounted then as it is rear ported.? What would be the best placement option ?
Should we invest in a decent speaker stands for 10 series BS?

Thanks,
Sunil

well thats personal.
a good stand cost+bs=maybe fs....

so its personal...i would buy simple table and diy its stability and keep bs upon it
