Budget Plasma LG 42PN4500 review

Hi Buddy...
Just got hte TV Will do some break-in and post the snaps..

Price: unbelievably 32390/- delivered to house via snapdeal (COD)
opened, checked and then only gave the courier guy the amount...

Very satisfied with the tv, But the black levels are poor at contrast 45 and brightness 45.. (Due to breakin)
switch to cinema for a sec.. Blown away by the PQ..

Earlier having a samsung 40c530.. LCD..FHD..
but this wins hands down in PQ even though its 768p..
running blu rays 1080p 24hz in cinema mode... WOW... wonderful motion control....

will post as develops...

Hi,

I just received my TV from Snap Deal, it is amazing for the price.

I notice TV is getting heated up more, is this common for this model ? or mine is defective ? could me help me to identify this ?

Hi Congrats buddy!!!

Whats the price you paid?
And answering your question...
The panel remains cool even after 5hrs straight (Followingbreakin methods thus low contrast, panel light & brightness) The back get gets slightly warm thorugh it is enclosed in a cupboard like unit (lesser ventilaiton than usual) but not alarming to reduce life of the components...
Usually plasmas tend to run a bit hot than LED/LCD counterparts...

Thanks for the reply,

I got it for 30890 with 6 months EMI. that was very kool price

I gifted this to my parents, Since i stay away from them i really cant tell how hot it turns. When i ask my father about feedback he was really impressed with the picture quality and he complained that screen is so hot after usage of more than 2 hours. Not sure it is really heated that much he says i can make a omelet on that

is it some thing wrong with TV or they have given any defective piece ? what should i do on this any suggestions.

Any way i booked a demo for LG, i'll ask my father to show to the person when he comes for demo.

Make sure the Panel light and contrast are set low...
and any dynamic modes are switched off...

That should help with heat and power consumption & importantly breakin correctly...

Is anybody using Tata sky SD box with this TV?
How do youset the aspect ratio and other factors to avoid black bar and view in the correct aspect ratio?
Is there any channel broadcasted in 16:9 format received in tata sky sd?

Planning to pick one but have these queries

hi Thirumalkumaran,
I am using Airtel HD+ connection with this set. Quality is pretty good. I am using default resolution sent by set top box. SD images are acceptable and no black bar.

First of all I would like to thank all the members of this thread for helping me choose this wonderful TV.

I was initially looking for LED with budget 35K but stumbled upon this forum and thought this is the one I am going buy.

I had received some amazing one liners from people about plasma e.g. "Viewing angles will be bad", "Too much of heat generation", and my fav is "Plasma radiation are harmful".. Ofcourse none of these geniuses knew abc of plasma or had seen it in person. So went ahead and bought it from local retailer for 34k (Rs. 700 more than best available online price) but it was worth it since I got the tv next day only.

So far this TV has impressed me lot. Tried avi, mp4 and mkv files on usb play and it does the job. Can read .srt files pretty well. I have videocond2h HD and both HD and SD viewing is good from viewing distance of ~8.5-9 ft.

Currently running it in break-in mode (low brightness/contrast settings) but got tempted many times to change it to Cinema mode where it simply looks awesome. SD channels especially the movie ones are bit risky as almost all of them will show movies in 2.35/2.4 aspect ratio so I am avoiding all the Blank bar stuff for initial 100-150 hrs. Showed few 1080p Brrips to my friends and they were really impressed by the picture even though native resolution is 1024x768

Tried to connect PC via graphics card and as expected picture is stretched but definitely not a show-stopper. Not planning to play any games on this as of now.

Sound quality is mediocre as expected from any flat panel but its more than acceptable for normal TV watching. I am not using any default presets. Instead tried user setting with all the low freq bumped up (to get some amount of base). Turned off clear voice all together and virtual surround:ON

Few things I would have liked to have in this tv- 1 if not 2 more hdmi ports, analog Audio o/p (dont have any digital receiver )

I am using videocon d2h and dint see SD channels broadcasted in 16:9 till now. In fact movie and infotainment channels are even worst (>=2.35 most of the times) strictly speaking from plasma break-in view. Tried 14:9, 16:9, Just scan but still there will be blank bars. Better not watch them a lot for initial few days and stick news/entertainment/sports channels

HD is no problem.

Hi whysoserious,
Welcome to the club :clapping:
Please ensure orbitor mode is enabled in settings. This will avoid static display on the screen. But as you suggested, black bars need to be avoided

Congrats on your buy!
Infact i,am enjoying everybit of TV right now and have crossed burn-in period of 350+ hours.
This is what i added additional equipment to my LG Plasma.
1. Bought HDMI Switch (Rs 400 inc. shipping) to switch between different HDMI inputs like Videocon HD D2h, Raspberry pi.
2. Recently i bought 'Digital Audio to Analog RCA' convertor from Ebay for Rs.1750. But Catch is it wont decode Dolby Tracks. Only PCM Digital Audio is supported.
3. Until Now i had spare Creative Inspire M4500 Speakers, which i connected to Above DAC audio convetor, sounds Rocks!.

I wonder how people missed this TV.
Maybe 'Mango People' are only satisfied only in 'SONY' Brand names, and are not ready to look behind the curtain for better value for money products.
The Quality of TV beats most of Basic-Medium Range LED TV's. Eventhough Resolution is less.

Hi, good that u r enjoying the tv... I have a qn on converter... So going bit off the topic, pls dont mind...
Was the digital to rca cost inclusive of cable from tv to converter ? Does the cable come along with converter ? If no, where did u buy the cable from and for how much ?... I m.also looking to buy one for my cordless headphone ...

@navrddy, concorde24 --:)Many Thanks

I absolutely agree this TV totally underrated/ignored by many novice buyers just because of gross misunderstanding of plasma tech.

:D I could have been one of them if I wouldn't have looked at this forum.

@navrddy- Nice to hear you got accessories for this TV. I too bought the HDMI switch from ebay which the genius courier have delivered to my watchman today. Can't wait to get home and check the piece (hoping its in one-piece).

I was thinking of buying the D2A audio converter kit but am confused if I should go for the optical i/p sound-bar +woofer only especially since I don't have existing stereo/HT setup at my home.

@concorde24-
Thanks for input. I have switched on the orbiter ISM, but once in a while I do see a very light image sticking of few bright logos. Nothing to worry about though, coz it goes away very soon.
Right now dying to get over with break-in period coz I am not able to watch many 2.35 ratioed movies.

BTW- forgive my ignorance but I have been itching to ask this question for few days. What do you call the image blurr experienced especially when watching sports with slow panning cameras (or few replays), or with tennis ball. Is it the so called "Motion blur" which should be ~zero in plasma with 600Hz sub field drive. Or its because of odd frame rate of those pictures.

Sorry forgot to ask one more question. What do you think is the better installation mode of this TV. Is it on TV-Stand or wall-mounted is better?

I have told LG guys to hold the installation till I get my TV unit ready. So do you think wall-mounting is a good idea. And what should be ideal height of placement if you take TV's bottom-border line as the mark. I think 3 feet above the floor level is fair enough.

Hi, Yes. cost was inclusive of TOSLINK digital cable.
If not, you can anyway buy it from ebay.in
Cable should cost around ~300 INR

Hi concorde24,
Even i tried hard to get optical bar for my TV. But it looks like they are all expensive. But If you get D2A convertor, you have the liberty to get the Wide range of Speaker setup with Sub-woofer; depending on your budget and choice.
Also kindly note, sound volume control is not possible from TV with digital optical out; So better get speakers(with amplifer) with remote.

For STB, it will not pose any problems because sound can controlled through STB remote. But issue is only present when you play any content through USB port etc.

@Everyone - Thanks for all the inputs and information provided in this thread.

I have been looking at the purchasing this TV purely because it is Value for Money and that it will be used in my bedroom with low ambient lighting . I was not able to compare the PQ properly since the set was located right beside a big display window in the Reliance Digi showroom but it looked good enough.

The main concern i have is with the extended warranty regarding the product :
The dealer i am planning to purchase it from saying that no extended warranty is available but the price quoted is good - 33.5.

I checked in a LG Shoppe which had no stock of the TV and they mentioned that extended warranty would be given for 1 additional year only.

Calling up LG support was pathetic/useless as they only mentioned an AMC costing around 5K roughly but they were not sure it was an extended warranty i.e. would it cover the replacement of major parts in the TV including the maintenance/servicing. Price on LG website for AMC for 42'' TV is 6K

Can anyone who has actually purchased the AMC/Extended warranty provide some more information/shed some light as to what is covered in the AMC or is the extended warranty separate?

With the cost of the AMC/warranty the price comes to around 39.5k which is too close to the Samsung 43F4900 which is 41k with 3D and a 2 year warranty.
