Checklist to avoid buying Demo Piece & Usage hours checking process for Samsung TV
Hi All,
Find below some useful information to check if the TV is a used piece, this information is based on my recent experience, I have purchased a Samsung 64F8500 plasma TV which turned to be a used piece and I have returned it.
Not all steps may be applicable to all TV models:
1. In most cases new/ unused TV carton box will have two plastic packing straps on both the ends and they are usually heat sealed in the factory. Used pieces usually do not come with the packing straps, however the dealer can still put the straps, but many of them just put a cello tape on the box and send it.
2. The TV bazel will be covered with polythene protective wrap on the 3/ 4 sides.
3. Check for scratches near the connectors, usually used pieces may have few scratches near the connectors.
4. Check the accessories packing, new one will be sealed with polythene wrap- dealers are clever, they usually do not open the accessories packing. Some dumb guys may still do it, so this can also be a check point.
5. When you switch on the mains/ power, the TV goes into stand by mode and you switch on the TV using the remote. Sometimes used pieces may directly switch on once you switch on the mains. This is because the dealer would have switched off the TV by disconnecting from the mains and not through the remote.
6. Your TV should go through an installation process when you switch on the TV for the first time, used pieces may not go through the installation process as the TV would be been set up before (clever dealers may do a factory reset though).
7. If your TV is a smart TV, check the history of the TV. You may be surprised to see the browsing history of the previous user (channels, web pages, photographs etc.- all screen shots).
8. Read the instructions manual carefully to know the start up steps of your new TV, you will then know how it should behave when you switch it on for the first time.
9. Never believe the dealer even if he is the most reputed one, do your checks.
And finally check the usage hours. Below is the process to check usage hours on a Samsung plasma, I presume this works for Samsung LED TV's also. You should have a normal remote (not the smart remote) to check the usage hours.
A. Borrow a Samsung remote from your neighbour
B. Switch off your TV using your remote, i.e. put it in stand by mode
C. Press the below keys in quick succession- Info, Menu, Mute, Power
D. The TV will switch on and the service menu will appear on the screen.
E. Use the down arrow button till you come to 'SVC'
F. Use the right button and the 'SVC Menu' will open
G. Use the down arrow button till you come to 'SVC Info', you will also see a '0' next to SVC Info.
H. Click the right arrow button now and the 'SVC Info' screen will open.
The below options were seen on my screen:
1. Model Code: PS64F8500
2. Serial Number- You will see the serial no. of your TV
3. Pre Software Version: Fail
4. Software Version:T-FXPUABC-1105.4
4. Panel Display Time: 18460 min
5. Last Mode (Connection)- ATV
6. Pairing: 3D Glasses: O, 11' Remote : X, 12' Smart Contr
7. SmartHub Used: Fail
8. Watchdog Count: 0
(Serial number 4 was used twice as mentioned above)
I: Switch off the TV using the remote power off button
Don't press any other buttons apart from the ones mentioned above, if you do it your TV may become unusable and you may have to call a service engineer.
Cheers, Ravi
