Chennai hfv meet- 29th january 2012

Acoustic-Portrait/ Geneleac,

What is the price range for the entire setups displayed, that we are talking of here? Any idea?

Sonodyne was never my cup of tea. Everytime I heard them, the thought only got stronger.

@Srini, I think we are ear buddies. :D
Jamo, MusicHall, Norge love and now the sonodyne hate.. :D ;)

Blasto,

If we become an audiophile and added to that happen to hear so many systems against it no doubt we hate sonodyne:)

Price of product you asked : Genelec : 1600Euros ( hey i mentioned one speaker) so 3200Euros a pair + Misc.. charges / Acoustic Portrait : 88k each Power + Pre which is an high end pair and they have an starter pack too which is an affordable one.

By the way i have added Music hall Cd player to pair with my Music hall Int. or Creek Evo.;)

Regards

I remember Clifford stating the price as 3.5 lakhs here.

Acoustic Portrait : 88k each Power + Pre which is an high end pair and they have an starter pack too which is an affordable one.

They have two series, an entry level series called Swara and reference series called Thiyaga. At present, they have only the following equipment, which was brought for display and their cost is as under: -

Swara Pre-amp.......38k + taxes
Swara Power amp...38k + taxes
Thiyaga Transport...88k + taxes
Thiyaga DAC..........88k + taxes

They are working out to bring out Pre and power amps in Thiyaga series but the pricing has not been decided yet. Also, there is no plan to bring out transport and DAC in Swara series.

Guys, a good news. Acoustic Portrait has offered to sponsor the travel of willing audiophiles by a minibus to Bangalore to listen to his setup. We can start on a Sunday morning and return by evening. I can organise parking at a central location for the vehicles. Do PM your willingness to attend the session.

Unfortunately, my laptop crashed and no net connectivity was available in my office for the past three days.

Just got it back.:yahoo:

Note: Preference will be given to those who have attended that last meet.

Are you talking about coming Sunday...So sorry then to miss out, I have a wedding to attend in the family.

Yeah..Sonodyne was not as dynamic as Norge, however I had a little doubt in my mind about such a wide dynamic difference and the reason I found was more technical.
I checked the Norge website and found that their amp ratings are specified for 4ohm speakers (the Norge speakers that was being played were 4ohms and not 8 ohms as was told to us during the meet) and when the amp was driving the 8ohm sonodyne speakers the power was down by almost 25%. This partly contributed to the difference in sound.

Correct. Looks like I got the model wrong, which I had assumed just from looking at the catalogue afterwards (catalogue was free ;)). So, if these were the 8250s, then there is a smaller 8240, which might be a tad more affordable, but probably still not affordable to a thad

Behalf Of Mr.Harish Reddy, I am posting his writeup on the chennai hifi meet

...

Third session was taken over by M/s Genelec active. Mr Clifford had come down from Mumbai to give exposure to his product. He briefly introduced his product and explained about active DSP technology and the future of active loudspeakers. He had got this new DSP active system model being 8250A. The hook up was jiffy, a mic was attached to a controller in turn to genelec software on Laptop and calibration was done, it hardly took 3 minutes for entire setup. Music was played from foobar to a external sound card MOTU to speakers the path was digital. the moment i heard the sound got glued to active topology. The track from Ben webster was playing and i could make the differences between the instruments between a passive and active system. The music was more precise, controlled and heart touching. A active setup is a big setback when in comparison with passive, the entire chain of high end amps, snake oil cables can be eliminated. The audiophiles might not like the theory of active dsp technology, as they have been bitten by traditional analogue stereo, but the future is active DSP.

The essence of the difference in not so much in active v passive, or even in the digital-input, built-in DAC plus DSP technology ... it is the design ethos of producing flat-frequency-response and unflavoured music, as required by the professional studio industry. the same designed-to-be-flat-and-uncoloured sound is designed into all of their products, from their titchy laptop speakers to their much larger offerings. Of course, the "active" component of their design is a part of this, because the amplification is also designed to be colourless (and matched to the drivers).

The DSP component is designed to address the fact that, when you put your flat-response speakers in a room, they are not flat any longer. There is manual adjustment, eq tinkering, etc etc, The DSP just does it in a minute or two!

Ashokji, I'm sending his contact details over PM. Alternatively you may tie up with Gvenu who visits them once a while and may be interested to take you along.

Are you talking about coming Sunday

Date is not finalised. I do not see much interest. I only got a couple of PMs.

i could spot my old pal David from one of the pix, is he on the forum?

No he is not on forum but we would be glad if you could convince him to join in. Our FMs would have a thing or two to learn from him.

But why does he need convincing to share knowledge and learn a few things from our FMs:indifferent14:?

Yup...he is an old horse. Remember talking to him some 8 years ago about his setup at some party in Bangalore. If I remember right, he had some ATC setup then. Sounded very expensive for me those days :)
