Chennai hfv meet- 29th january 2012

Hi all,

It was a pleasure meeting you santhosh and the recording of Spanish Harlem by Eva Cassidy brought by you ,is still ringing in my ears, and appending my previous posts I suggest than in future meets we should have a music only session featuring favourite artists/ band/numbers from each member so that we get to expand our listening tastes and genres.

Murali, that Eva Cassidy track was not brought by me. As agreed by me, I had bought quite a few CDs. Due to interest of time, the only track that got played was Wynton Marsalis's "Feeling of Jazz". We had an overdose of Ben Webster though, those Illayaraja tracks (excellent LP rips btw) that you got were like a breath of fresh air :).

It was interesting to interact with Thad, his profound liking for Carnatic music and his vast knowledge of the artists.

He commented after listening to "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck that it is kandachapu Thalam in modern avatar.
:lol::clapping:

It is very interesting to hear somebody's music journey while getting introduced in the noon session. We had fun more than in the introducing session than hearing session. It is more enjoyable to hear the passion and journey towards audio and video by everyone.

kuruvilla jacob- Kottyam to chennai : We have to be very thankful and appreciate his love towards music for make him travel from Kottayam to Chennai for this audiophile meet.

His passion towards music started very late and grown very strong than everybody over here with more than 4000 Vinyls and 40 Turntables:clapping:

We can see his tremendous efforts/time he has spent to collect and to maintain those Vinyls and TT's, and to add it is still growing.:)

the rendition of that illayaraja number was breathtaking. No wonder Murali challeneged if there ever was a better recording than that version;)

Mr Kuruvilla was telling us about an article of his to be published in the Times of India, hope we can a get a link to the e-vertion of that article. He was very eloquent and I was fortunate to share the table with him and Siva of Acoustic Portrait. He was explaining the music quality reproduced by turntables with good ancillary equipments and his passion was not lost on me. Siva consented with him except that hi-def audio files just about outperformed the turntables.
We defenitely must have a session with turntables and invite Mr. Kuruvilla and I am sure he would oblige if we can plan to suit his travel needs.
It would also be enriching if at that time we can have the DAC/Cable sessions aswell which I sorely missed thisd Sunday.

I can mever forget the expression and the grunt;) that Captain gave me on seeing the powercord I carried with my Dune Max.:)

Will be very useful for those, who plan to go Vinyl(and Bankrupt).
I can bring my low-cost phono pre-amp for comparison :)

I am a total noob when it comes to Vinly/turntable. It would indeed be a great experience to understand that technology and also listen to them.
I started with shellac, let alone vinyl! But my biggest wonder is that people keep this most fragile medium pristine and and unscratched. Over the years, however much care I think I am taking, somehow Mr Sod seems to apply his law to my LPs
Hope we can all catch up soon and get a chance to listen and compare the pure analogue & digital mediums.
We did some comparisons of vinyl with the CD issues at C-HFV-2. The differences were, in some cases, so great that it was hard to believe it was the same album, and must have been down to re-mix/production issues. We need to prepare our own test material, so we can compare the original LP with our own digitised files. Of course, we should keep the digitisation as raw as possible.

This will be a fascinating exercise, especially if we can contrive to make the comparison as blind as possible

Hi,

the recording of Spanish Harlem by Eva Cassidy

@Murali,if I am not mistaken the recording played at the meet was Rebecca Pigeons version of "Spanish Harlem" from the Chesky demo disc .

Hi Rajiv,

It was a guess, though I have heard only Cliff Richard's version.

:p:p^^^^^ Please next time some regional audiophile songs only ^^^^^:p:p
I agree we should include some more regional songs which would help better judge the products. The Illayaraja number from Murali was mind blowing.

It sounded like Ben Webster was out of breathe by the end of day :p:p

Nothing tests a hifi like western classical. Nothing presents such a challenge of soundstage, such a variety of sounds, such difficulty in isolating the instruments from each other and such an enormous dynamic range. The trouble is that I don't think it is particularly popular among our group --- and that symphonies do not come in three-minute chunks.

Even I do not have much of a collection, my Western-classical interest having been mostly in my teens. The CD I had with me was my one-and-only w-classical CD!

Looks like you had great knowlegable and useful session. Please Count me in for next meet. I happened to see the thread only today , and missed this session.

Specs as below:
3 digital inputs (usb, optical, coaxial)
1 digital output (coaxial) converts usb and optical digital input signals to coaxial digital output
1 pair (rca) analog outputs
superior Texas Instruments (Burr-Brown) PCM 1796 24bit/192kHz processor
24bit/96kHz digital processing via usb input
24bit/192kHz digital processing via optical and coaxial inputs easily connects to PC and Apple computers

I would completely agree with Nick here.
The next time around I offer to bring my collection of western classical especially pipe organ music and 1812 digital cannons which i use to stress test amps and speakers. I ve actually had amps running blazing hot and speaker cones come loose on some equipment.. :)

Mr.Rosh,

Is this called destructive testing?

I invariably lower the volume whenever I listen to those cannons firing away on the Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture:ohyeah:. Scared that something may happen to my speakers. So my fears are true :)
