As you said minimum needed is 8 people, will pay once you have 8 on board for GB.

Thanks
Pandu

I'm in for 8 ...yeah I'll build half an amplifier :-D
So for 100 you will need another 6 guys to put up their hands.
Are we there yet?

This is the information I can find in the datasheet -

CORNELL DUBILIER
Product No: SLPX153M050H4P3
ESR 120Hz : 0.031?
ESR 20KHz : 0.023?
Ripple Current 120Hz : 6.56Arms
Ripple Current 20KHz : 8.20Arms

CAPACITOR ALUM ELEC 15000UF 50V 20%, SNAP-IN
Capacitance: 15000F
Capacitance Tolerance: 20%
Voltage Rating: 50V
ESR: 0.031ohm
Life Time @ Temperature: 3000 hours @ 85C
Height: 45mm
Diameter: 35mm
Capacitor Case Style: CAN
Typically for Pass amps, you need to look for 105 deg C caps and not 85 deg caps.

Here is the cabinet for my F5T v2 (v3?) build. Ready to go off for anodizing, after necessary holes are punched.

Cheers.

I guess you have the heat sinks which have the baseplate of 20mm thick and 75 mm fin length including base plate thickness.

How much did you pay for it.

Also your cabinet looks big, what are the dimensions.

Also with regard to the max temperature of the caps, We have the 75 degree centigrade cutoff by the thermistor. Is that not enough to control the temperature of the inside of the amp. Also with regard to the 85 degree centigrade limit of the caps, some factor of safety will be included in those numbers since these are US made.

Thanks
Pandu

Got the cabinet done.

Nice looking cabinets. I reckon you both would be using them to house both the channels. Could you guys share how much did it cost you and also, their dimensions?

captrajesh,

Dimensions

Dimensions external 17.5 inches wide X 16 inches deep X 6 inches height

DImensions internal 11 inches wide X 15 inches deep X 6 inches height.

Cost of the box

Heat sinks Rs 4300
Aluminium Material Rs 2500
Job work Rs 2000
Anodizing to be done Rs (700 Max)

Total Rs 10000 Approx

little over budget but enjoying the journey. Have not spent on my audio system for over 2 years so it is ok.

Thanks

Thanks for the update Pandu. Now that all the components have been procured and would be dispatched shortly, I need to scout around for the heat sinks first and cabinets later.

Hi all,
I have received the latest quote for Cornell Dubilier 15000uf/50V Snap in caps.Final price would be 260/cap,minimum quantity is 100 pieces. Please post your interest here with quantity required.I will need payment in advance.

Sachin

I am interested in caps.

I am going to initially do a V2 but will move to V3. I had built earlier a V2 equivalent with Toshiba dual outputs and has been in service for a while now.

The details are posted in this thread

http://www.hifivision.com/diy/16667-new-diy-amp-nelson-pass-design.html

The heatsink is the biggest that perfect metal has and costed me around 12K for 6 feet length, which gets me little more than 2 cabinets.

The transformer is a 1 KVA toroid. I have the matched pairs for V3. The cabinet size approximately is 15" width, 9" height, 17" depth.

The caps will get hot even at 55C. There is a life span curve for different temperatures. Operating near their maximum reduces their life span considerably. Before the 75C cut off happens, lot of other damage would have happened. We should make sure the bias is adjusted not to cross steady state temp of more than 60C. The test is 5 seconds touch.

Cheers.

The goal is to keep the heatsink temparatures around 55c.
That will keep the inside case temp in 45-50 range.
The caps are rated @ 3000hrs @85C.

This should easily give us 5000-6000 hrs.So with a optimistic 4 hr listening Evey day this gives us 4 years. That's enough for me :-)

I would request everyone to buy a half decent DMM (600 bucks)
with K type thermocouple temp measurement

&be careful with P3.An incorrect setting can blow up the fets (when set to near their extrimities) or introduce unwanted distortions (couple if extra careless turns)

Sugessted method is leave that piece (not sure whether anything needs to be jumpered) or set it to mid values .

As for me I'm practising this with ARTAA and creative soundcard to get a hang abbout P3 setting but I'm a long way off

I suggest to leave it empty in the place. This will reduce the gain by little amount. That is okay rather than burning Fets.

Otherwise keep in strictly central position measuring equal resistance on both sides of middle pin. Or in place of P3, add two 100ohm 1% MFR in place joining them at the hole where the central pin of P3 suppose to go.

IMO this is not advised to play with P3 for many of us if don't have distortion analyser handy.

We need one more member for CDE GB.I will buy remaining 16 caps if required.
All other parts have been received only waiting for remaining Diodes which already been shipped from US.
I request all F5T GB participants to transfer their share(ignore if paid).I am short of funds.I will start shipping kits in one week.
