Electricity bills adds more heat this summer

yup yup.. ours too and our tenants were suspicious why theirs Tripled !!!! hmmm and we have major power cuts :(

its like this..

Summer powercuts - Load shedding and because we ll get less power from hydro Electric Projects
Winter - Preparing for summer & may be couple of riots Telangana - Andrha Fights/Strikes
Rainy/monsoon - Wind blows we have a power cut .. as a precaution not even a gale but a little xtra breeze and we have a power cut & then we proudly call ourselves advanced..:sad:

I couldn't have put it better than this!

same time of the season back. Didn't find anyone to paint the roof. Will talk to asian paint guys.

Again wondering - will a cooler inside the room be effective? Or to get most benefit, should I place it outside?

Another theory - if I use AC+cooler, it should give much better cooling because
1. AC will also cool
2. by removing moisture from air, the air is dry again, and air cooler will again fill it with moisture, and hence more cooling by the cooler.

What is the difference between air coolers from symphony etc vs desert coolers that are supposed to be placed outside the room/ house?

I believe Delhi heat being of a very dry nature, you would be much better of by placing a small water based Symphony cooler inside your room. As long as the weather remains dry, there should be no need to run the AC at all. The cooler would keep on adding the requisite moisture in the dry indoor air giving a tremendous cooling effect. The reason being, since the outside is extremely dry the indoor moisture laden air now would cater to the evaporation based cooling which would be 'felt' inside. However, this arrangement would fall flat the moment rains set in, as the outside too would have that level or more moisture. Then, you would need to get on with the AC only.

I use a cooler + AC combination and it really saves electricity in dry summers. Sometimes I use only cooler.
(another advantage of using cooler is low static which is good for my Vinyls on turntable)

Keeping humidity and temp within a range is the key to comfort and savings on electricity bill.

I would suggest to go for cooler alone till the time climate is dry.
Running both cooler & AC will result in the cooler humidifying the air and AC trying to dehumidify the same air.
I remember when I used to live in Lucknow, our cooler used to cool so much that we usually had to switch it off by 4:30 - 5pm. Of course, once rains set in, the cooler became non-effective.

Few years ago when I was in Hyderabad, I bought a few of bags of Surya Cool (it's a kind of whitewash) and painted the entire terrace myself (two coats). I saw a remarkable difference in the heat levels although it's not going to miraculously cool your house. The proof is that I can comfortably walk barefoot on the terrace as against earlier when the feet's skin would have got peeled off. I don't remember the cost exactly but it wasn't more than a few hundreds for a house of 3 rooms (approx 500 sqft). It will last for 2-3 years and will need repeat coat after that.

Not sure here in Chennai, but you can ask around.

Here in bangalore i myself had put Apex Ultima white paint (4 coats) on the roof, the difference in roof temperature taken by a IR temperature gun is around 5C lower on the painted surface. The paint even today looks good as new after 6 years.

The room temperature dropped by around 1.5C ,that may not sound big but you can definitely feel the lower temperature.

Our city, Ranchi is burning over 40 degrees constantly now. Ironically, it was once known as summer capital of Bihar, when it was a part of Bihar. The population increase after it had become the Capital of new state of Jharkhand, and resulted deforestation, summers are now bad here too.

However, we are using a cooler for keeping us comfortable and thankfully the dry summer suits it. We switch on the cooler in the night before sleeping and then sometime later in the night, I have to turn the cooler off and switch on the ceiling fan as it becomes cold enough to wake us up:)

In the day time, inside our flat, its not that bad as we are in the 'lower floors' in a high rise building. Let's see, by how much time we can delay the purchase of an AC!:) (and subsequent electricity bills)
