When first came in 1998, they used to be around 1999€ equivalent(inflation corrected in 2025: 3047€ or around 2,75 lakhs x 1.3 times). The indian prices are generally 1.3 times the price of European / US prices at the lowest. This was revised to 2400€ in 2004. The current generation 800 series bookshelfs retails for around 10,000 euros in 2025.
800 series is the higher end series from Bowers and Wilkins, and back in its day it used to be their highest end bookshelf that was in the market. High end speakers are not just about sound, but also their build, looks and quality of parts(which translates to good sound and reliability), and manufacturing tolerances. I have listened to the D4 briefly in a home theatre setup. They are good, but definitely not my cup of tea in terms of sound(also out of my budget range). Its like buying a used Rolls Royce from 1999. There can be new cheaper cars which are more comfortable, faster and so on. But its still not a Rolls Royce
