G401 fan,

I have an SME leaflet which puts it at 9.5 and the one with detachable headshell at 12.5 gm. The analogue-classics site has it listed at 6 in their table, but there's the same double sided leaflet scanned and put up further down the page, which lists the weight at 9.5. Unless the leaflet was a misprint?

Regards

Edit: Also my series II 3009 which is non improved is 12.5 gm and the 3012 is 14 gm, which is how I remembered the weights, since both 3009s are same except for the nylon bearing and that plastic attachment thingie after the yoke

steven, temme, can i use a denon 103-R with this one? or should i relegate this to do duties as a second arm, loaded with a mono cart?

Malvai,

If the arm weight is around 6.5, then the resonance would be in the 18 range and if its around 9.5, then the resonance would be in the 16 range. Technically you could be safe upto a figure of 20, since we don't have wooden floors here to create thuds, so while that figure is not ideal if you're adventurous you just might be able to work it and perhaps add some weight to the headshell, you'd have to see if you need a heavier counterweight?

However best to run it with what its meant to work with and get a high compliance cart either stereo or mono.

Regards

Edit: Some people also like what the FD 200? fluid damper does with the improved arm. You could check that out also.

Jelco 12 incher. Sub-600 dollars, oil damped, very well made, etc. Or Scheu Classic. Both should work very well with the DL 103.

A question that has been bugging me for a long time now -- will the RB250/251, RB300/301, RB600 or RB700 work well with the DL 103? I had almost made up my mind for the Origin Live OL1 or Silver or the RB 600 or 700 but this doubt persistently raised its head. I will be glad if anyone with experience or knowledge can clarify.

Although, I am too novice to reply on anything about TT, but whatever I read and from other's opinion, DL-103 may not work well with Rega RB250 due to its weight. DL-160 may be a better match.

you need a heavy arm for a DL103 as it is a low compliance tonearm...the Rega's apparently do work well with it
AudiogoN Forums: Can Denon DL103 Cartridge Match RB700 Arm?

Joshua,

I don't understand your conclusion. As Arj said and as the thread indicates, Regas match well with the Denon so OL is still an option for you since you seem to have narrowed down to it. And if you Zu the Denon later on, the increased weight should help. So why is the rule out happening?

Regards

Joshua the RBs reach the "Fantastic" level from the RB700. they cost $$s but if bought used, have a great resale value .

generally "Old school" TTs go well with it..not sure of how many are available in the $600 range..maybe Jelco 750 ?

Oops:o
I read "the Rega's apparently do work well with it" as "do not...". My bad. I had passed up an RB 700 some time back. Lemme check if one more has come up.

Josh,
been seriously contemplating the Scheu Classic mk II, 12" arm... its at a great price, available in India AND has promising reviews!

IMHO, the Classic II & the Thomas Schik tonearms are the BEST contenders... The Jelco 750 XX are the next best deal and then the Rega...

What do you feel?

What's the price of the Scheu Classic II 12 incher? Classic I 9 incher, as far as know, is about 29K + 14% VAT. Damned good price, I'd say.

Schick would be an equally good choice.

Do you mean the Jelco 750D would rate higher than a Rega RB 700? They do cost about the same.

The Scheu Classic II 12" is costing under 30k INR + taxes... I'd say a fabulous price!

Spoken to Jochen Semler, and he can place an order as soon as I am ready! His trigon Phono's are superbly priced too! I guess you and i - both would need Phono stages as well!

and yes, the Jelco's are as good, if not better than the Rega's! They are OEm for many many manufacturers, so i guess if they are lowish priced, its because of the huge numbers that they do!

Yes, Jochen's prices are reasonable and products are selected after lot of thoughts by him. I have ordered a Trigon phono.

The past few days have been mighty confusing for me. Imagine sitting with a superb idler, but no clue at to which tone arm I'd ut on it!

research and more research just throws up more and more options. More options ot a Gemini like me, is disaster!

But thankfully, I have narrowed the choices somewhat.... Based on prices - i am not willing to spend a penny more than $800... so that leaves me with the following:

1. Scheu Classic Mk2 12"
2. SME 3012 (if it shows up in good condition)
3. Transfi Terminator
4. Origin Live Silver Mk 2 or 3
5. Rega (any of the models)
6. Jelco 750D 12"
7. any of the Ortofon 12" arms (these are way over my budget as of current ebay trends)!

The problem is that I haven't heard any of the above arms, except for the SME 3012. So, I'd love to read your imressions, suggestions etc!

If you have alternatives (within my budget) I'd love to hear of those as well!

Happy to add to the confusion: -- MG 1

599, so well within your budget.

Edit: add 140 for pump.
