Good news for vinyl Lovers

akd, But I read somewhere (or heard?) it is a rumor that HMV has large no. of vinyls in their warehouse. Can anyone confirm ?
Thanks

Hi Guys,
today I got the Sufiaana vinyl released by Sony Music. It is very very dissapointing in terms of quality.(MP3 quality at best) It is better to stay away from it. Most strange part is it doesn't have the song Shukran Allah as written on the cover instead it has something else not sure what it is called. Does all the copy have same problem or it is only mine. Any idea about Marasim which is also a Sony release?
Thanks.

Today I ordered 3 vinyls (Maachis, Marasim and Sufiaana) from flipkart. However, after reading mahiruha's report on Sufiaana, I just cancelled it. Instead I may go for the Guru vinyl. Anybody has any idea about the quality of the Guru pressing?

Regards.

I think now you can believe that 12 inch CD exists. :ohyeah::ohyeah:

Hi,
I think if a person is not finding any difference between the new vinyls and the corresponding cds then there is a problem in the setup of that particular person's vinyl rig.Setting up a tunrtbale properly is a tricky affair indeed.
Thanks.

The point is, ashiqui/dil hai k manta nahi lp sounds way better than its cd on a given rig and still todays lp releases sound just like 12" cds on same rig. Can setting up b blamed??

Hello folks,

Just saw at Rhythm House website. Vinyls of Maachis, Rudaali & Jagjit Singh Bhajans released.
Has anybody bought them?
Would appreciate a feedback on the recording quality and quality of vinyl before buying them.

Regards

Vasu

Got Vinyls of Machis and Rudali, both are of decent quality and sound very well. You can go for them

lets try to figure out a way...
there are two types of OSTs release

1. Original analog LP release first, subsequently CD release - give me an example where the CD sounds better
the reason as we all agree - originally recorded in a analog set up (spool) and LP got the juice of all efforts. The CD is digitally mastered/tempered/enhanced and later and thus sounds different (in almost all cases inferior)

2. The CD release precedes the LP release and the LP still sounds better - any example??

the reason may be the OST is recorded in digital facilities which never thought of a possible pure analog release and the result is the digital source converted to (mastered) analog signal and in the way caught in the web of conversion?? in this case the analog version can never stand out beyond the realms of digital sound

listeners are buying new records - thats a nice practice so far, waiting for the companies to new pressings of OLD OSTs from spools or high quality tapes

last couple of months I have spend around 10K for around 12/15 new records while in that money bought around 30/40 old but excellent condition LPs, the result - with an open heart I can say the new LPs are useless for me while am feasting on the old but Mint condition records, for those who may want to know what are these old records here are a few
DISCO DANCER, KARZ, SADMA, APNA DESH, GHAR, GOLMAAL, MASOOM, IJAAZAT, NAMKEEN, ANGOOR, KHUBSOORAT, KINARA, PARINDA, KUDRAT, THE BURNING TRAIN, PALAY KHAN, RAJPOOT, NISHAAN, MAN PASAND, DESH PARDESH, LOOTMAAR, HAMARI BAHU ALKA, BHAVNA, LAHU KE DO RANG, ZAKHMEE, ANGAN KI KALI, AHSAAS, TRISHUL, NOORIE, TOOTE KHILONE, HARJAEE, SHOLAY, SATTE PE SATTA, KATHA, AITBAAR and many more

I give you two examples - if possible get the LPs (details below)

1.
title: WOH JO SHAYAR THA
artists: BHUPINDER
composer: himself
lyricist:Gulzar
label:MIL
time of release:mid 80's
genre: Gazal
recording format: 5 track stereo
experience: it takes you to a different world with soulful poetry of GULZAR aptly composed and brilliantly rendered by BHUPINDER, and the recoding quality is heavenly.

2.
title: SHAHAS
artists: mainly BHUPINDER
composer: AMIN SANGEET
lyricist:don't remember
label:MIL
time of release:mid 80's
genre: light music
recording format: stereo
experience: a decent enough efforts from two unknown fellows, BHUPINDER in his elements, excellent stereo separation with mostly high frequency instruments used, I bet you will love it

These albums will never make it to CDs for sure, they are not so easily available but if you happen to get them will cost less than half of what you are paying for the new LPs, listen to them and make your own judgement.

so my personal verdict is from now onwards I shall be very very selective in buying new LPs and will spend on the older ones only

Hi Arnab,

U spoke my mind. When it comes to pre-digital era of recording reproduction, nothing comes closer to vinyls. Then with the advent of digital recording, the art of analogue recording & mastering is lost. Presently the new vinyl releases are nothing but a business strategy, conceived by some people who thinks Tagore was a great businessman who earned millions by only investing some petty amount towards paper & ink . There are no such words called "art" or "quality" in there vocabulary . Hence better to devote our time & money towards collecing & restoring the old vinyls. Whatever are still available on the streets/chor bazar/raddi shops can make a listening experience of a lifetime. Buy the new ones only as collector's items, since these may not be available anymore on the shelves after a year or so.

Thanks & Brgds,

Bhaskar

Hi Guys

Just finished listening to

Rudaali
Sufiaana
Guru
Marasim
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham

They all sound very good. No issues with any.
In Sufiaana the Shukran Allah from Kurbaan is not there. Instead there is O Re Piya by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan from Aaja Nachle.

Hi Prem,

With the current resurgence of vinyl, there may be hope for a re-issue of those titles, if not by Water Lily themselves, then by people like Classic records, or by one of the German labels.

I recall reading an interview with Kavi Alexander in the mid-90s, where he had defended his (then) decision to stop vinyl production because of lack of demand, and unsold stock.

regards,

If Kavi Alexander will release any more music, it will MOST likely be as high resolution stuff on HDTracks. I hope he releases some vinyl records, but it definitely won't be on the the now defunct Classic Records label (bought out by Chad Kassem of Acoustic Sounds and stock is being liquidated).

Kavi has exquisite taste in music...it will be our good fortune if he decides to release proper vinyl in the future. Maybe we can all petition together?

Digital or Analogue, so be it, can't care much!!

I'm just so happy that we are able to buy records and listen to them on our record players, oops sorry, let me re-phrase, I'm just so happy to buy vinyl off the shelf and listen to them on my turntable. Also feels great to see the format return big time. Lets hope that we'll see more vinyl flood music stores just as how CDs do, today.

Another thing, for vinyl to have mass market appeal and business viability, we Indians need to change our approach with regard to how we listen to music. Most indians are into combo music systems and nothing higher. We even have TV programs like Gadget Guru to propogate the so-called convenience of this approach. I remember a contest run by Gadget Guru for gadgets of the year. One of the categories was for entertainment electronice. The heights was when a combo system from LG (or samsung) beat a Norge Amp for the title. This was an absolute joke!!

If vinyl need to reach the mass market, probably combo systems produced need to come with a turntable as well :)

ask yourself these questions

1. How does it feel when these companies sold their analog pressing facility, and sensing some business getting records pressed abroad and charging 4 times what actually they worth?

2. Why people who once loved and still love records do not feel like buying these damn expensive stuff? Is the reason only about time sickness?

3. Can you name a single record newly released which have a decent cover work? gate fold cover? Is Rs. 700/- too small an amount for these?

4. Whats the objective of releasing albums which (majority, not all) will be forgotten (along with its record) forgotten within 6 months? does it bring new people into vinyl listening?

5. Where are record players? what these companies have done on this ground? One of them made a pact wth LENCO which tried to convince people with a few cheap, over priced TTs, obviously it failed miserably. Can't an ordinary person afford a decent 12K TT? if yes where and what he is supposed to buy?

6. Who have chosen these OSTs
HUM AAPKE HAI KAUN? DARR? VANDE MA TARAM? does any one listen to these OSTs any more?

Point is not about digital or analog? rather how such a nice affordable media became a expensive/wallet draining hobby, I have bought thousands of records never felt that with older records.

my 2 cents only

+1 for the pratical Q's posed by Arnab. Unfortunately the manufacturing and marketing companies think it the other way round. For them and even generally in the market ie the agents / dealers and even retail shops the impression is that only guys with surplus can afford this hobby. I went to a few shops in Thane while on my visit last month and I was given a stern stare with a definite "NO" when I enquired about the new and used LP's etc as if I did a grave blunder by asking for LP's and not accpeting their shelf full of CD's instead. The guys were not prepared to discuss any further!

So until this mindset changes ...and I don't see it in near future .....probably we may have to face this and keep diggin out the raddiwallah's and chor bazar friends for the old good stuff!. Just sharing my recent experience and views on this.

Of the above, I cancelled the order of sufiaana, but now on your experience I may consider it again. I have the Marasim, it is quite good, especially side 2 for better musicallity. The Guru one I am hoping to receive today. I heard Maachis yesterday, very lively sort of recording, again no issues there either.
Regards.

Hi Asit

Sufiaana is enjoyable. Pl keep in mind compilations will normally be a wee bit less in quality compared to the albums.
