Got home the Panasonic 42V20 :-)

Congrats!
Looks fabulous, gotta go to a nearest Panasonic showroom to check out this beauty today.

Thanks to everyone! I got lots of input from this forum before purchasing my plasma TV.

I think the Indian version does not have THX and it says Infinite Black, so there is no "Pro" version of that either. Still I feel, it's a good TV with loads of features. I've not tried yet all those features yet...

I got this from Panasonic Brand Shop at Daruwala Pool Pune for 67K, along with 50 movies DVD pack and a Benetton watch! I think those free items are left overs from some old offer; but getting them for FREE is not bad. :)

Can someone please tell me how to calibrate this at home, and how to take care of plasma in the initial phase? Do I need to worry about the Image retention or Burn-in?

I'll upload the pics soon.

Thanks!

^^Nice I should have bargained more....:-( anyhow, its all fine now.

Even I need help regarding this I have no clue I am a total noob regarding this, so far I have just kept the brightness, contrast at only 33 as I only watched at nite.

Congrats on the purchase!!! and as far as breaking in is concerned you could download some break in mages and then via USB set them as screensaver for the first couple hundred hours, the thing with using break in images is that the phosphors are aged very evenly with that, otherwise u can just turn the brightness and contrast down, also i wouldn't play games during the breaking in period, if you are not going to use the break in images then i would recommend not staying on a particular channel for long, and avoid gaming altogether.

I have done about 125 hours in the last 10 days or so. My Panasonic C10 did not come with any instructions on how to break it in. Here is what I did with my C10.
1. Kept Contrast and Brightness at 25% (has to be low, you may or may not find exact settings for your TV). has to be less than 50 on a scale of 0-100, or less than 0 on a scale of -50 to +50
2. Picture to Cinema mode.
3. Color at 60%
4. Color scheme warm
5. Played HD content with zoom, so that the black bars are not visible at all and the picture fills the whole screen.
6. Played the above mentioned images for about 20 hours or so, with timing of each slide less than 15 seconds.
7. When watching SD (DTH), changed the channels frequently and also zoomed at times so that logos are avoided.
8. If there is a feature for preventing burnin, like pixel shift etc, switch it on. I could not find any such thing for my TV though :(
These are the basics of break in that I have gathered from the internet and this forum itself though I could neither enter the service menu nor could find the exact settings for my TV. Experts may chip in with their opinions.

FWIW:

I've read that break-in is only required if you plan to get the TV calibrated. Otherwise, it's good to go.

@nanu

When I was deciding which TV to buy (lcd vs plasma), what struck me was how LCD's were much brighter and sharper. That had pretty much sealed the deal for me. How/why did you decided upon a plasma ? Is its comparitive dimness an issue when you're watching it at home ?

Was there ambient light when you tested the sets?
My major poin ts were infinite blacks, no motion blur issue, no input lag for games, and the TV is stunning at movies for sure...I do notice the difference with the IFCC or whatever ON while watching Planet Earth FullHD content via PC connected thru HDMI.

On SD play back also is 42v20 better than G10?
I dont know I didnt really compare that, i only compared it to one fullHD movie.

whether the tv sound on v20 is better than g10?
I believe so, but i did not care about this either as i intend to connect it to a dedicated sound system. But this supposedly has a 2.1 and it does sound ok for now.

I believe that for a Plasma TV you *HAVE TO* keep brightness way down for the first few hundred hours or so.. read it up on the Internet... after that you can use it at full brightness.. also use some screensavers to prevent burn-in.

Enjoy it

Firstly, this is my first quote on hifivision..

Hey Max.. u wudn't have to do it for the Panasonic 12 / 13 generation Plasma TVs.. thats the fun of it.. No burn-in issues on the Panasonic Plasma TVs anymore. That is one good reason why they had been giving 3 years of warranty on their Plasma TVs which also included the TVs Panel.

Thanks..

Does this have the full THX setting calibration screens as in the UK model VT20?
For reference,please see this: Panasonic TX-P50VT20/ TX-P50VT20B/ 50VT20 3D TV Review

Actually, comparing the Panasonic UK page here (VIERA Flat Screen Televisions - NeoPDP TVs - TX-P42V20B - Specification - UK & Ireland) and the Panasonic India page here (VIERA TH-P42V20D | V Series | Digital AV | Panasonic India), the Indian version V20D seems to exclude THX, and the Infinite Black Pro system. Seems like they've shortchanged us again!

Hey Buddy,
VT20 Series is a Full HD 3D Plasma.. coming up very soon in India.. Probably in a few months time.. You can drop in at our showroom on Dhole Patil Road for a demo of 42V20 though

What are the Panasonic 12/ 13 gen TVs?
The manual of my C10 reads
"Do not display a still picture for a long time
This causes the image to remain on the plasma screen ("image retention")
This is not considered a malfunction and is not covered by the warranty."

I Booked my P42V20D yesterday. Got it for 68000 after bargaining from 74,000 orginally quoted. this with 3 year warranty and 50 DVD pack free. Some good movies in that as well. Got it from Panasonic Brand shop in chennai. They did not have this piece on display though. I got the piece they were to deliver me and checked it out. Was happy with the sound and was looking for more with the picture quality. The sales guys told that during installation, they would fine tune the settings for us to get some good quality. However, one person told that we should not be watching programs using tata sky as its only Mpeg2. He was asking me to shift to SunHD. Thats an additional 10K. I've put that on hold now.

Just exited to lay my hands on that. Will post more once i get it along with the photos.

I also got p42v20d from jodhpur for rs71ks. It seems that this model is same as g20 except lack of thx. which was not launched in india. So it doesnt have thx, infinite black 'pro', and hd tuners of v20b model for europe. Thx is not big deal because true cinema mode is same as thx except color management in advance setting. Color management is available in professinal mode. What i have felt that true cinema mode though on warmer side at default setting gives the best overall details in highlights and sahadows. Settings for g20 available on net can also be applied on v20d in true cinema mode as those setting dont touch color management. Contrast 28 to 29 (average lit room) brightness 0, color 33 to 35 (depending upon content), sharpness 45, vivid color off,red gain 3, green gain -2,blue gain 0, red cut off 2,green cutoff -1,blue cutoff 0.pnr off, detail enhancer mid (in set up menu, works well without adding artifacts at mid setting),intelligent frame creation on (setup menu, doesnt really add plastickyness unlike some other brands and very good with both movies and tv) i am using sony's new bd player s370 and hellboy 2 golden army dvd(not bd) is unbelievable, this kind of detail, depth i have never seen. Sony bd player is compatible with high resolution 24bit,192khtz audio files and outputs them thru hdmi. This panasonics plays those file with great clarity. Panasonic has very good illumination and one doesnt need to increase contrast levels much even for bright rooms. For average lit room contrast at 28 is sufficient. For avatar movie seeming wash out,i feel at default cinema mode and high contrast this feels, but at the those settings mentioned above avatar feels more natural and original than in ur face kind of look (blacks are extra black tending to loose detail and bright are extra bright tending to loose detail in lcd tvs) of lcd tvs. This panasonic has ample dynamic range so as to produce metallic objects shiny bald heads (shiny bald head, i feel is the toughest test for any lcd i have never seen lcd doing this as good as panasonic plasma) movement is too good, checked with avatar and alice in wondeland dvd (this dvd is ultimate for color detail) sd thru cable is very good. Clean channels dont show any pixel at all. Some people sensitive to light filcker may notice flicker in slow moving scenes with bright background but that is when one is not concentrating on main subject of the scene or with tired eyes or when one is not concentrating on the movie. This is natural as the screen is lot bigger than old 21 incher crts. Flicker issue is highly subjective and not a issue at all if someone is concentrating and enjoying the movie.

I couldn't find info about the floating black-levels issue in the V20 model. Can one of the owners comment on it, whether they have observed this or not?

Hi guys, here goes my new plasma TV pictures, which I bought last week but could not upload the pics because of time constraint.

Plasma 42V20 switched off:

These pictures may not look clear and sharp; this is because of my poor photography skills. But the picture looks great in real life, and I'm really enjoying it.

Sound is also good enough for a flat panel TV, but not as good as my Sony Wega CRT which has 2.1 speakers.

I still need to properly calibrate this. I have set the the settings to the moderately low levels just for break in period.

Has anyone tried DLNA on this? Please share.

Thanks!

Just some of my initial impressions : Picture quality is really very very good, especially when the images are big ie maybe only 2-3 persons on the screen. Cannot say the same while watchin Football. Left a lot to be deserved. It was all grainy. I was watchin through the dynamic mode. Maybe could be better through other settings. Will check and let you know. Watched photos through SD as well as USB and the quality was amazing. Mine is just a 3.2 MP camera and even for that, the quality was good. Very easy to use actually. Sound is good, but not great. But quite sufficient for a home environment. If you want a theater kind of an effect, better to invest in a good home theater system. I am watching the channels through Tata Sky. If people want any specific tests to be done, let me know and will try and post comments. Also, what is all this about calliberating?? the sales person told that these panels dont have Lead or mercury and hence the need to calliberate or break-in is not necessary. Maybe an ignorant saleman....i dunno. Please enlighten.
