Hi!

I am Alok Prakash from Noida (Delhi) and joined this forum a few minutes back. Though i have been reading it for a few days but joined only today.

I am currently in the process of creating a dedicated Home Theater Room in my independent house in Noida on the 1st floor.

I will need help in what kind of Acoustics are required and what kind of screen is needed.

My room is 17 ft 4 in long x 11 ft 11 in wide x 9 ft 6 in high. It has 2 doors. One for balcony which will mostly remain closed and one to enter into the room.

My budget for Screen is around 10K and for Acoustics around 100K.

Thanks,
Alok

Alok,

You can always hire an acoustic expert, but if you decide to do it yourself, you can get pretty much there using some of the tools, measuring equipments and some relevant reading. Some of the guidelines help a long way in getting the acoustics right.

Many people go in absorbing a lot. while it improves the clarity, it also makes the room sound very dead. If you absorb too much reflections, then it results in smaller soundstage, sounds appearing in between speakers etc. The key is to get the unwanted reflections out and keep some so room is lively enough. Again, this is a personal choice.

Few things you need to do -
  • Make sure your listening area is symmetrical on left and right. If you do not have it symmetrical, then the reflections on left will never be same as right. It will totall affect the room.
  • don't have your sitting totally behind. Leave at least few feets on each side of listening area. Especially in back.
  • when it comes to acoustics, its lower frequencies which are very hard to get a smooth response. you can start by getting some of the corner traps because that's where most of the bass lingers. There are some threads here where people have built corner traps. Refer to those and it will give you some idea.
  • Have some of the absorbers between left and center and center to right speakers. Then put some on the back wall. This will absorb the reflections of front speakers on the back wall and will stop making the front sound coming behind you. Same if you have back surround speakers. The absorbers on front will stop making the back speaker sound coming from front. If your left and right surround speaker is facing each other, then you can do the same trick.
  • You can put some diffusers on left and right side of the speakers to increase the diffusion. It helps in widening the soundstage and make room lively.

These are some of the starting points. The more accurate results will be when you measure the room. If you want, get a good SPL meter and measure the room. I think the SPL meter has many more uses and one should keep one with them all the time.

Read more on Ethan Winers website. It has tons of information. People do the room treatments differently and to varying degrees because everyone's taste is different. Some people like dead sound and some want lively room. You will need to go by what suits you better. Rather than doing acoustics in one shot, I prefer doing it in steps, evolving. That way, you are testing the results and tweaking it more to your liking.

Happy Theater building. :D

Thanks manoj.p for the useful information. I am planning to do the Acoustics myself with the help of a good carpenter.
I have contacted 8 proffesional Acoustics consultants and they have all (believe me all) told different methods of doing the room Acoustics.
They seem to be more experts in making Studios than Home Theaters. They seem to be more focused on Sound Proofing and somehow I am not able to belive them.

Also please can you tell me if the Liberty 110" Fixed Projector Screen is a god option. Abhi Projections is selling it for 19K including transportation, taxes and installation. I went to their shops today and they seem to be professionals.

Thanks,
Alok

I would suggest you slow down a bit and plan things. One should never buy a screen in isolation. In theaters, the projector, room and screen goes hand in hand. I would suggest researching on what projector you would like to buy first. See which one will work in your room, how you plan to mount it, How big you want the picture to be etc. After that, look for the best screen that goes with it. There are different screens. Like Grey screens or Matt white etc. Decide which one to buy as a system and not individually.

If you the dedicated theater room, you can also look at acoustically transparent screens. I have been to a local HT meet where the host had the AT screen. The audio visual effect you get is tremendous in such theaters. No speakers, no clutter etc. Very clean looking. Only you and the picture infront of you. But you need to have at least 11 ft seating distance so you won't see the weave. And you need at least 3" space between front of speaker to screen. Seymourav.com sells the material only, and its about $20 per linear foot. But do your research before you decide to go either way.

As for Liberty screens, I think goyal.sanchit and rshri bought their screens recently. They also had a debate of grey vs white screens. You can check those threads in the Projector section.

Manoj,

I have already bought an Epson 3010 projector.

The room is 17x12 and so I do not think I have enough length to put speakers behind my screen and so was thinking of going the normal way of having the speakers in the side of the screen.

I have also bought Denon 3312 receiver and Polk Audio RTi Series Speakers: A7 Fronts, CSi6 Center, FXiA6 surrounds and DSW Pro 660 Sub Woofer.

I am also planning for some sort of Acoustics in my Room.

I wanted a Fixed Frame screen of aesthetics reasons. Most people in the forum have bought pull down screens but I did not want to pull it down every time I want to watch a movie.

Thanks,
Alok

Alok,

Thats good info to have. That epson is plenty bright. Check with Rshri and Sanchit Goyal because I believe they bought the same screen. Set your speakers up and then plan the acoustics after measurement.

You can invest in a good spl meter like Dayton EMM 6 for measurement. will help a long way in setting up your system.

Manoj,

Rshri and Sanchit Goyal both got pull down screens. I read that post "Waves in pulldown screens" completely and also saw all your comments there.
I have not got any good options yet on fixed scrrens. Many people say the DIY route is better for Fixed Screens. Then which Fabric and from wheredo I buy the fabric?
