Help in choosing a 5.1 setup

Don't think about atmos speakers now. Surround sound experience in horizontal plane is more than enough at beginning. You may think about vertical plane later on . You will not miss movie experience without Atmos but with poor sub you can definitely. You may wait for few months, you may get better atmos speakers within reasonable price from FM in our classified section. Invest that money is good quality subwoofer from SVS or XTZ.

Do you think that the QB12 is bad ? Well, I did audition the entire pack (different AVR) and it was quite good I guess (I am quite certain that my judgement would be worthless in this matter, still :P). It did have good reviews (very few though) and supposedly merges/supports the other 3000i series speakers very well. Will the SVS PB/SB1000 be a huge upgrade ?

You need to take it to count the fact that the place you auditioned will have different sound characteristics and especially the subwoofer. By specs on paper the sub will be good enough for a small room. But yours is big so you should plan for a powerful subwoofer.

Well yeah, I understand that. :) I also have in my mind the fact that I have to move next year, and it is very unlikely that I would end up in a place with such a large living room. :D

Tough decision - since all the other speakers are Q Acoustics, I assumed that the QB12 would merge better with them and hence be a better pick. Also, I felt that a sealed sub-woofer would better suite my taste. Where I auditioned, I could compare it against a Paradigm ported woofer - don't remember the model - and I think that the ported one was more "open". I enjoyed both.

Just looking at the spec :

SVS PB1000 : Ported, 10" driver, 300 Watts
QB12 : Sealed, 12" driver, 220W(?)

Would the SVS be a noticeable upgrade over the QB12 ? I hope there was someone here who owns a QB12. :P Or I wish I had the option to buy both and return one. :P

Subwoofers don’t have to be the same brand and same brand doesn’t mean it will blend better when it comes to subwoofers. If you have made up your mind go for it. As per my opinion every thing you listed sounds reasonable excluding the sub. I would definitely avoid the sub. Your call

Wokie. :) Lemme see if I can audition them side by side.

Once you mature in AV world, the first thing you will do, to upgrade your subwoofer. Definitely Q Acoustic, Dali, Polk, Emotiva etc have good subwoofers in their products catalog but they can't match the performance level of specialist subwoofer brands with similar specifications. Most of the FM have upgraded their subwoofer from regular speakers brands to specialists sub brands and then to the higher ladder of subwoofer from same brand or another specialists brand. Now you have a chance , if price difference is not more than 100% and within the budget ( with sacrifice of atmos speakers) you may try it else Q Acoustic will serve you for many happy years. If you are comfortable with pre-owned subwoofer, you may float request for pre-owned SVS, XTZ, REL, Rythmik subwoofer on forum wanted section. Definitely you will not regret if decision taken wisely in this regards.

One SVS PB 1000 may not pressurize your large 30 X 14 ft room. But you can start with one pertaining to any brand you like & add another one later if you feel so. Try taking a demo piece on trial in your house if the dealer permits as that may give you the best idea. If you don't mind then there are some preowned subwoofers of different makes on sale in Hifi Vision in the classifieds section.
If you are set on buying a SVS product then shoot off a mail to SVS on their website. Give them your room dimensions/layout , HT gear specs & music/movie preferences. They will get back to you in a day with the proper advise.

Lets say, I decided to spend some extra on the subs - SB/PB 1000/2000. My movie-music usage is something like 70-30. Which would be better - the sealed or the ported ? I just have this fear that the ported ones would be too "boomy" and make all the cupboards and stuff in the living room vibrate as well irritate me coz I hate the "boomyness". :) I'll definitely try to audition these (no idea when :( ), but please do give your inputs.

@Nitin K : I did talk to the SVS customer support. They, of-course, suggested the SVS PB-2000 or the 2000 Pro. :P

Well if you are interested you can check my sales ad for the xtz 10.17. It has a lot of options to calibrate the sub and get a controlled bass.Even in my small room it isn’t boomy and bass is well controlled. It also has the option to be used as a sealed sub. If you can invest 80-90k for sub alone you can go for the pb2000 which is the most popular sub under a lakh for HT use. It’s rival subs in the same price range is the xtz 12.17 and rythmik subs. You don’t have to worry about ported sub being boomy since ur room is big enough. Also @Vivek Batra is selling his almost brand new klipsch 15 inch subwoofer. I will highly recommend it and currently the Best Buy in sales section at the moment in our forum. If you are looking at pb or sb1000 xtz 10.17 is a way better option.

Love4sound has given you a lot of options for the subs which are quite good.. The SVS PB are not boomy since they have a flat response, it depends on the room & placement. Besides your room is quite big . You can keep the sub a little away from the corners & walls. I have the earlier PC 2000 in a room size 14 ft length & 11 feet height & width & they don't sound boomy. Plus Audyssey XT32 did a decent job on it.
The PB/PC 2000 pro series will go few notches below 20 hz for movies with the lfe tracks for those frequencies. You will get good impact as the frequencies dip below 30hz
especially for movies like Jurrasic Park, Transformers etc. The pro series can be used with open ports or in sealed mode.

The SVS guy said about the Pro series models. About its sealed mode and also not to plug the ports (this was new info).

Anyhow, let me see If I can audition some more. :)

If you are having the budget for pb 2000 why not consider the klipsch 15 inch @Vivek Batra is selling. It would be way better then pb2000. It was compared with pb3000 by youth man and the performance was almost close except for deep lows below 20Hz. He hasn’t used it and it should be in brand new condition.

Yeah. I did talk with him. I have not finalized anything though. :)
