Help me select my first Home Theatre

biswanathda,
when designing HT room, don't forget about a good digital voltage stabilizer. CESC will kill your system in July august when the rain and storm will start.

Thanks Rupam, It was completely out my consideration, is there any specific voltage stabilizer that works well with the AV Receiver ?

For THIS room size, you would be faaaaaaar better off with bookshelves than floorstanders! Pity, no one pointed this out to you till now. This Forum has people going ahead and procuring FS for similar sized rooms and then later (much earlier than expected) giving away the FS to finally settle for BS.

Moreoever, most here had started off with HT system (5.1, 7.1 ... 9.2 blah blah) and it has been observed that within 365 days have gone in for 2 channel music only .... :p :p. Just trying to help you in NOT wasting money .. by raw experience ... :indifferent14:

Thanks for your suggestions and sharing your experience buddy.. Currently I am visiting the stores in Kolkata that are selling the Hifi HT systems, I will consult one of acquaintences to get a view on the appropriate system for my room. However if you have any better suggestions please do let me know.

Hi forum friends....

I have recently bought the BenQ 710ST home theatre projector from Amazon.com, got a very good deal at around 43500/- including import duties & shipping charges. The same product is sold at Rs56000- 60000/- in Indian market. I read very good reviews about it. I would tell everybody who is looking for a good short throw home theatre projector to go for it and buy from Amazon. Also booked 100ft 12 AWG OFC cable from ebay.in Global buy for Rs.3840/- its a great buy. I think the same would have cost me at least Rs. 6000/- in Kolkata. I am building up Home theatre stuffs slowly. My house is currently being done up and hope to complete the entire set up with in next two to three months.

recently I went audition different speakers at Harmonie House at New Alipore, the owner Mr. Vasudeo Jagwani was very courteous and patient to answer my silly questions and demoed lot of good stuffs. I started with Paradigm 5.1 setup which was good, but not to my liking as I heard better sound from Polk audio. then he changed it to Wharfedale floor stander and surround (diamond 10.5) with the mighty 300 watt Paradigm Sub, I was blown away by the sound produced by the Sub. it changed the entire listening experience. At my request he set up the usher book shelf, center and surround speakers with the same paradigm sub. the sound from the usher bookshelf and center along with the sub was simply mind-blowing. It was crisp, clear and produced real surround effect, got immersed into the sound produced by the Usher speakers. Now planning to go for usher with paradigm sub or may go for a combined set up.

I think that will be a great decision. Ushers are great speakers. I have heard about them a lot in hifi magazines. Here is a review > Usher Audio Technology S-520 loudspeaker | Stereophile.com
Which AVR are you going to decide. You make sure that your AVR should have ample reserves of power -- a low power amp could easily run out of steam and the resulting distortion is unpleasant.
For ex: If you speakers are rated 100 -- 120 Watt, your amp should be 150 watt....

Make sure you buy MX speaker cables (16 AWG) from him. Its a very good cable. costs about 130/- per meter.

Let us know about your purchase.

hi Friends
I want to establish new H T . My Total Budget is 1 lac total so , what to do i have seen Denon 1713 with Polk Speakers I liked but any more Suggestions require from Friends

Hey great to hear about these speakers. I have never heard them on this forum anywhere before. Even a web search brings out flawed results. Could you also give an idea of the quote, along with model number, you are getting for them and the sub

They look a little ugly in the pictures, maybe they are good when you actually see them. If they are very good, can these be auditioned in Mumbai - and if so where. I am thinking of buying the Marantz 6006 or the 6007. Will this be a good combination?

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I hope I get some replies.

Thanks Rupam for your suggestions, I have zeroed in on Onkyo TX NR 818 receiver. But today I went to Promises store near Kala Mandir, the sales guy was very rude and was not willing to spend much time with us. more importantly when I had a telephonic discussion with them few days back they promised me of good discount and also requested me to visit their store, but today they did not even budge from their sticker price of 95000/- and very rudely told me that they do not offer any discount on any product. Do you know any other store in Kolkata that sells Onkyo receivers ?
Will it be wise on my part, if I buy it from Amazon and use it with a stepdown converter ? it will be lot more cheaper as well. If nothing works out I will have to buy Denon 2313/3313.

I saw your new purchase, congrats for the new AV setup.

I have already purchased 12AWG OFC cables from ebay.in Currently my entire house is being done up and the interior work is going on in full swing. I will finalize everything within next month.

After lot of research I have decided to go for the following speakers-
Floor standers- Polk Audio RTI A7,
Center - Usher v603
Sub : Paradigm DSP 3200/ Polk DSW 660
Surround Polk FXI a6

Hi Mehul : Your choices are good but, you can also try out Wharfedale diamond series speakers they are really good and will fit into you budget.

Usher speakers are really good, the Center speaker was something to die for, the sound produced within its range was awesome and it was life like. You must hear it to believe me . I do not know where you canbuy it in Mumbai.
But the bigger looking Bookshelves will not go with a powerful receiver, you can try the Floor standers.

I bought BenQ710W Short throw projectors with glass beaded motorised 120" projector screen for my room, the combination looked awesome, I am already in love with both of them.

I have been working on setting up my Home theatre around Onkyo TX NR 818, Today I went to Promises store in Kolkata for the AVR. Despite promising good discount on both speakers and AVRs the salesman present in the store behaved very rudely and did not offer any trial and also refuted any promise of discount from their end. I left the showroom and decided, come what may I am not going to purchase anything from this showroom. Could you all audiophile members help me to decide whether I should buy it from Amazon or ebay and run it with a step down converter. Is there any other Onkyo store in Kolkata or is there any Indian online store selling the product? I am little puzzled, please help me with your suggestions. Is there any other AVR with similar features and specification as TX NR 818 has??

What a coincidence (or is it!)... even I have been treated likewise in Promises in Kolkata. Being Disgusted I quit the idea to buy from them.

biswanathda, try to contact

Reliance Digital

Vishnu Enclave,
Adjacent to Surya Sen Metro,
No.229 NSC Bose Road,
Bansdroni,
Kolkata-700 047.
Tel:033-24997083

They are also official dealer of Onkyo as per website. They might not have that model in stock, but request them to order.

If that is not possible you try to get it from Amazon.de: Gnstige Preise fr Elektronik & Foto, Filme, Musik, Bcher, Games, Spielzeug & mehr

Onkyo TX-NR818 7.2-Kanal AV-Netzwerk-Verstrker (7.2 Kanle, THX Select2 Plus, ISV, HQV, 4K, 180 W/Kanal) schwarz: Amazon.de: Heimkino, TV & Video

Why amazon.de ? Many Forum members have bought from them.
Its also 220 v. Look here > http://www.hifivision.com/dealer-feedback-review/24309-amazon-de-amazing-service-best-prices-same-220v-5-days-delivery.html

The last option is that leave aside Onkyo and Get a Denon/ Yamaha AVR.
I don't know why do you prefer Onkyo so much while there are better AVRs in that range in Yamaha and Denon.

For example : Yamaha RX-A1010

Thanks very much Rupam. I have contacted the Reliance Digital stores few weeks back, but they could not help me.

There are several reasons for buying Onkyo TX NR 818, it is full of new features like THX certified, superb viodeo processing through dedicated chip sets, DTS Neo X, latest room acoustics calibration, upscaling feature, there are few other features which I do not exactly remeber but have been the compelling reasons why I chose this AVR. the Denon models with similar features cost double the price. Please let me know if there is any model within the same price range and similar features.

I am planning to buy it from Amazon.de. thanks for the idea. Hey while writing this post I just placed an order for the ONKYO AVR and saved almost 20000 bucks on AVR.

After a disappointing experience at the Promises Store, kolkata I placed an order with Amazon.de for the Onkyo TX NR 818 AVR. I saved 21000 even after paying taxes and transportation costs. Thanks to Rupam for giving me this idea.

Now please help me to find a region free Blue ray player within 15000 bucksand it should have Wifi, DLNA and 3D capabilities. I can stretch my budget a little.
