Hi,

I have just bought a 42" LG LE5500. Tried to connect it myself yesterday. Though the SD transmission is just OK, the HD is mindblowing. Also tried playing movies over USB and the output is awesome.

Have a Tatasky connection and have a query regarding the SD transmission though. The channels appear to be slightly zoomed in - checked my settings and am unable to decipher if there is anything wrong.

Could you please help?

Do you have TataSky HD? If yes, SD transmission should be decent as the STB does some amount of upscaling. Slight zooming in is because of the "default" setting in the STB which will be set at 16:9 for HD STB, change that to 4:3 if you wish. You will see some "improvement" if you set your panel to "Just Scan" instead of 16:9, but remember this will result in black bars around the panel. Also, try and maintain a distance of around 10-12 feet for SD viewing to get a better experience.

Prit,

Yes, I have Tatasky HD. I have set the option to JustScan and tried playing around with 16:9 and 4:3. As you have mentioned, the quality is definitely decent. But the issue is the slightly zoomed in view I am getting in SD.

Till now I had just a 21" CRT and maybe this is an immediate effect of seeing in a larger size which I would get used to.

Thanks for your comments though.

I would need some help with the picture settings. Will post my settings- could you please let me know how it compares with yours.

Thanks,

Sathish

Yes, shifting from 4:3 to 16:9 take a bit of adjustment, most channels do 4:3 broadcast which gets stretched in 16:9 mode, but you will get used to it. You can revert to 4:3 in your STB settings if you wish, but downside are the vertical bars on both sides - not pretty :)

Do post your current settings, will check.

Prit,

Many thanks for the inputs. Yesterday I found a link for the calibration of LE5500 for near D6500 K output.

Tried the same settings and loved the output. Tweaked around only a couple of parameters and am happy with the output both for HD and SD.

- Regarding the vertical bars, yes I agree that they are not pretty. Hence I think I have to get used to the stretch for the 16:9 conversion.

Thanks,

Sathish

Prit,contrast 90????????????!!!!!!!!!!!
What is IRE caliberation,I didnt notice

I know, Contrast 90 is bit surprising, but with complete calibration, gives wonderful results... both SD & HD contents. Try it out sometime...

IRE calibration options are under "Expert Control"....

If you are a serious fan of HD movies, renting Bluerays will be quite expensive unless you are rich! Why not take a 2 Mbps DSL link instead (airtel comes quite cheap) and download from Net? Try demonoid.com or some other torrent site, search for 720p/1080p videos with .mkv/.mp4/m2ts extensions. Usually should be 4GB+ in size, and takes less than a day to download at 2Mbps. (Remember to rename .m2ts files to .mkv, else they will not run)....

I have a bunch of those downloaded, plays wonderfully, doesn't cost a dime!
