Someone is selling EPs of old Hindi film songs for Rs. 50 each. Can some of the FMs advise if it is a reasonable price. The conditions appears to be good. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

netant ep extended play records. 7" vinyls. usually 45rpm. if they are 33.3 rpm 7" vinyls they are called super 7.
@navin 50/- is fine. provided they have covers and are in great condition. and you are buying them on selection basis. that is you are not buying a whole lot with all unwanted undesired titles too. in which case you should negotiate.
in fact its a great price.

Until last year, I have bought EPs in good condition with & without covers (if the record is in good condition, I am not always finicky about covers) for as low as Rs. 10/- each: Selected copies, not in lots. The max I have paid for an EP is probably Rs. 20-25 per disc:)

But let me also add that after vinyls are back in vogue, I don't expect to get EPs much below the priced quoted to the OP. However, may be slight negotiation has its space here....say approx Rs. 35/- for selected copies each.

I used to get EPs with all covers intact for Rs.10 and EPs in not so good condition for Rs.5/- But that was 3 years before in Madurai, Tamilnadu.

Since vinyl is in more demans in recent times, the price has gone higher. In Mumbai, the vinyl community should be sizeably large comparing to other small town, hence more demand and more price.

If you are buying more than 5 EPs, try and get good bargain.

I think it is a good price if they are in good condition and have covers also.
Here in Bangalore I get EPs from a vendor at Rs 25 each but they are often not in that good condition and almost always without covers.
Very good quality and difficult to find EPs I have also bought for 100/- each as well. This offer is good according to me if the condition is good and with covers. Bargaining doesn't harm though :)

A tip for you while discussing prices. Always prefer to ask only those who are purely into buying records. You'll get a more realistic price.

Hi Navin, can't speak for the rest but someone like me, who is only into buying only (with no intentions of reselling at some point), will give you the buyer's perspective. Just today, I bought a lot of 45 LPs from a friendly old gentleman at Rs.50/- each. All the records were in good condition but soiled. A bit of cleaning is required. That's all. My point is that only guys like myself who buy only, would dare mention that a purchase was made at that price point. Unfortunately, when it comes to records (whatever size), its a sellers world out there.

Sometime back one non famous reseller offered me EPs for 25/- each. Though buying select titles at 50/- could also be fine. But buy in small quantity as of now. If you keep looking then for sure you will get chance to buy Lps for sub 100 range.

I've a pretty decent collection of classic pop and rock (some jazz too) singles - 45s and EPs - from the 60s and 70s, and continue to look for select titles. They used to cost 5 or 10 rupees each, till a few years ago. Now, it's 25 to 50 and 100+ for Beatles and Elvis, no matter the condition.

Still, it's a reasonable sum, if it's something you really want. Especially compared with a category called 'Northern Soul' (rare American Soul singles from the 60s that are highly sought after by DJs in dance clubs in the North of England) which have been the hottest stuff on eBay for many years now. They typically sell for $1000+.

Just wanted to add that unlike LP's, EP's/SP's are very difficult to judge condition wise. They were mostly played on 'record players' or 'Juke boxes' with cheap ceramic cartridges which have bad reputation of damaging the grooves. So even a fine looking 45 may not play fine. Hence the price varies accordingly.

Secondly, for 45's covers play a very important factor when deciding the price. If the cover is original and in intact condition, then the price(whatever it is for the record itself) doubles/triples.

All said, besides some rare, hard to find collector's record, normal 45's are sold for Rs.5-15 a piece without (any) cover, depending on condition. And Rs. 20-30 a piece with intact cover. These are normal price. Rest depends on how badly you want those pieces.

Best Regards,
Bhaskar

+1 to Bhaskar, well put.
In my opinion one can give up to Rs 50/- depending on the title and condition.I have bought EPs for Rs 5/- each as well as for Rs 50/- and in the future I may pay even Rs.500/ if I want the title badly enough.I had been searching for "kadhalikka neramillai" Tamil lp and " Izzat" for the mesmerizing song " yeh dil tum bin kahin lagta nahin" for long. I recently paid Rs 300/- for the Tamil LP and Rs 100/ for the Izzat EP.
regards,
shafic

+ few from me.
1. There is no fixed cost for a gramophone record. It varies from person to person based on the knowledge they have on the records.
2. If you are buying, better to have some knowledge/information regarding
a) your exact requirements
b) average selling price of similar records (take help from search engine results)
3. Nowadays VG++ EP with original cover sells in a price range between INR 20 and INR 50+
4. A soiled EP/LP with damaged/no cover even sells for INR 5/10.
5. When you find a badly needed EP/LP , strength of your pocket and state of your mind makes the decision. [I have paid even INR 100+ for some rare EPs, just because if you miss it ... you miss it]
6. Average selling Price of Hindi LPs with original cover starts from INR 20 in Chennai (in case of bulk purchase). Now a bit hard to get....
