How much are the EPs worth?

I think EP (extended play) refer's to a 45 with more than one track

I think that the term EP (Extended Play) & SP (Short Play) are used interchangeably for all 45 RPM/ 7 Inch records; except for Super 7s, which play at 33.33 RPM.

Of course, you meant 45 RPM!:)

Well..just because its an EP it doesn't mean that it has to play at 45 RPM right? EP is not the same as a 7 inch 'single'. I have an EP in my collection that has 6 songs! It's just another 12" record that spins at 33.3 rpm. There are some EPs that are clock over 30 minutes. Although EPs generally contain less than 20-25 minutes of material. I don't know how an artist/band decides that 'my next album' is going to be an EP or LP. Maybe if they think they don't have enough material for a full length LP they release it as an EP. This is my understanding..I might be completely wrong (Slayer's Reign in Blood, an LP, runs for 28 minutes )

Well..The album which i was talking about was released as an EP in Europe. However in the US, they added 2 songs to it and released it as an LP.

Examples of LP like EPs:

Knse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nil Recurring - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I went through the first ling and would like to quote a para from the article:

"Note that this is considered an EP only in name: at 57:30, it is much longer than a standard EP, or, indeed, many LPs. In fact, it is longer than Dream Theater's first two albums. Portnoy has said "It was important for us and the label for it not to be perceived as the latest studio record. That's why we tagged it an EP."

Hope that clears the air.:)

Yes it's something like Xerox and Surf :) . IMHO "7 inchers" should be more apt.

AFAIK, following are the categories for the 7 inchers:

1. 45 RPM with single 'normal' duration(3 to 5 mins) song on both sides : Standard Play (SP)
2. 45 RPM with more than one 'normal' duration songs on any or both sides : Extended Play (EP)
3. 33 RPM 7 inchers : Super 7 (HMV), Mini Lp (Inreco). Don't know what they called in West.

Also the duration of the 10 inch 78RPM Shellac was called Standard Play. And of course there are various examples of longer duration 45 RPM 7 inchers in India and abroad.

For those who are academically interested, here is a link about the history of 45RPM's which I've posted before in another thread. Lots of interesting info's.
