I am looking for lp/ep/shellac of........

Hi Hitensitapara

Lps in gatefold sleeves are typical first presses when it comes to Hindi vinyl. They are also many times pressed on thicker vinyl. This is for releases from mid 70s onwards. For lps in the 50s, 60s upto about 1971 you need to look for Angel presses. Most Angel presses will be first run presses. Many times on the lp cover you will see the Angel logo but you need to look at the vinyl itself to check if the Angel logo is there. Angel presses are very expensive and can run into thousands for certain titles.

Hi Dr

Not all Pakistani pressings were pirated. Some were official releases. For example i had a Baiju Bawra lp made in Pakistan. Also if i remember correctly some film combinations are different on Pakistani releases.

Got two vinyls of Suman Kalyanpur. 'Best of Suman Kalyanpur' and 'Sumans songs'. On first vinyl jacket Backcover is written reproduced from old recordings compromising quailty of reproduction for sake of nostalgia. Vinyls sound terrible as if pillow has been put on speakers. On suman film songs Polydor has rerecorded her old songs afresh. This vinyl too sounds terrible. But she has an amazing voice.

Another interesting story my record selller says is one of record is courtesy of Mr. Vinod Sonthalia a biggest HMV vinyl Dealer at that time who had massive collection of almost all of original pressings which was sold to an NRI for huge sum. He even had few titles which HMV didn't have. So his name is mentioned on the covers.

Hi Hitensitapara

Not heard the Suman Kalyanpur pressing. So cannot comment. I am a bit surprised that quality is bad. Normally EMI pressings are decent sounding. That statement 'reproduced from____' basically means the original recordings have not been tampered with. Maybe they messed up with the transfers in case of this vinyl.

deepakjeswal.....

this MADAN MOHAN record u mention,
I Remember MM : By Lata Mangeshkar - (HMV - ECLP 5966)
is missing from my collection.....
although i have have most of the songs from this compilation in my comprehensive MM collection.....

ITs a MUSH HAVE....
what nostalgic numbers ---- 'Woh bhooli dastan' , 'Woh chup rahe to', 'Haal e dil yun unhen' , 'Teri aankhon ke siva', 'Rasme ulfat ko nibhayen', 'Naino mein badra chhaye'.....

people who have heard the magic of Madan Mohan and Lata, would know what the ZENITH OF MUSICALITY is.....

Couldn't agree more with MM-LM combination being the zenith of musicality. They were indeed a dream music composer-singer association.

As regards that particular LP, I'd suggest you get in touch with Past Collections in Bombay (Fort), if you come here. I'd bought my copy from there only.

Yep, I have the Aap Ki Parchaiyan/ Woh Kaun Thi combination.

While LM-MM association is great, do try out MM-Asha Bhonsle as well. They also did close to 185 odd songs together and some of them are really just mindblowing.

Off hand , on immd. recall, since they would have played in my player in the past few days:

- Saba se yeh keh do ke kaliyan bichaye - Bank Manager
- Kahti hai yeh thandi hawa - Ilzaam
- Ajji rahne do chanda badli mein - Chowkidaar
- Ishq ik zahar sahi - Mem Sahib
- Yeh kaun meri zindagi mein aa gaya - Bombay Race Course
- Bhanwar mein meri nayya - Maa Ka Aanchal
- Shokh nazar ki bijliyan dil pe mere tu giraye ja - Woh Kaun Thi
- Mat khol ghoonghat pat - Senapati
- Dariya ka kinara haaye haaye - Bank Manager
- Bhor hote balam chalen jaayenge main ro ro marungi - Sultana Daku
- Saqia saqia - Nawab Siraj Ud Doulah ( The last is an amazing Arabian-style number with some lipsmacking interludes)

Hope you have visited MM's site at MADAN MOHAN... The Musical Legend | The Official Website of Madan Mohan

+1
I remember watching a song on cable , definitely c or b- category movie, the song was a famous bulle shah number chhap tilak sab chheeni also featured later by kailasa. Can we have more examples please?
Ps. Its infARCTion

Chhaap tilak sab chheeni is Amir Khusrao, no?

Chhaap tilak sab chheeni is Amir Khusrao, no?

Of course it is. How stupid of me. Mindgames maybe. The bulle shah work that echoed in my mind for 10 minutes while I tried to recall this song was jogi de naal.
Speaking of heer, what works (heer) are we having on vinyl?
Apart from ghulam ali singing heer, lataji s heer in '71 heer raanjha there is one very interesting pun line of heer in kishore da s gangaram kunwara rah gaya.
Then a narendra chanchal ep worthy of "hifivision rare vinyls audition meet" featuring 'ni mai kamali aan.'

NUTAN VARSHABHINANDAN......

Celebrate ur new year with this very rare video of LATA DIDI recorded when she was just about sixteen - seventeen....

I had seen this video much earlier, with a private collector here in Pune, who claimed to have ALL Lata Mangeshkar songs on either of his huge shellac, EP, LP, Reel-to-Reel, cassette tape, CD, MP3 collection.

It was actually C.Ramchandra, one of the first persons to have spotted the genius in Lata, who recorded this video. This can be confirmed by the last 2 seconds of this video where u see him jump in the frame, sitting in front of didi (seen by me in the video i saw with the collector, but has been deleted in the youtube video).

RAAG - MALKAUNS
ARTIST - LATA MANGESHKAR
shoot initiative - C. RAMCHANDRA
SARANGI - PT RAM NARAYAN
TABLA - SHRIPAD NAGESHKAR (unconfirmed)

Sorry guys,
After consulting a very learned HINDI MUSIC INDUSTRY insider, I take back my statement that, " C.Ramchandra was one of the first persons to have spotted the genius in Lata". --- FALSE.

Here goes the chronology of events,

1929 - the great Lata Mangeshkar was born. She spent her childhood in various places like Pune, Kolhapur and came to Mumbai in search of work, after the death of her father Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar.

1942-43 - she started working for MASTER VINAYAK's PRAPHULLA film company in Mumbai, landing small roles as an actress.

1943 - was the year in which Master Vinayak's music director, DATTA DAWJEKAR , spotted her singing talent; and gave her first playback solo in a Marathi film, KITI HASAAL.

1943-44 - Lata sings her first HINDI solo number for a film named "AAPKI SEVA MEIN". Music was again by DATTA DAWJEKAR.

1946 - the first HINDI film industry biggies who discovered her talent were ANIL BISWAS and GHULAM HAIDER. Ghulam Haider guided her in taking URDU lessons and along with these two, she also worked with KHEMCHAND PRAKASH and VASANT DESAI during 1946 - 47.

1949 - came her first HIT movie MAHAL, music by KHEMCHAND PRAKASH. Also released during this same year was BARSAAT by SHANKAR-JAIKISHAN.

The year this video was recorded could be as late as 1947-48, as this was the time she was introduced to Ramchandra Chipalkar a.k.a C.Ramchandra.

No records on Western Classical music, minimal presence of Jazz in the Rhythm House website:annoyed:

Didn't expect any on Hindustani Classical music.

Regards

Lack of Indian classical reissues on vinyl is indeed surprising...given the niche LP market I would have expect those to be released more than the filmy stuff.

Ironically HMV has a bunch of CDs out under the title "First LP Record"...these would probably be excellent candidates for LP reissue.

Interestingly, regarding Western Classical , a quick search on amazon revealed no reissue results. It appears that there is a general approval of digital formats for this genre

Note that as long as the CD carries the term AAD [ Analogue recording, Analogue mastering, Digital reproduction, it is still alright. If you happen to be an analogue head, that is.

I think one problem that we have is, that we are extremely cost conscious and risk averse when it comes to niche segments. HMV would rather sell filmy records ( I am not a great admirer of present day Hindi film music I am afraid) than drum out old masters and press them anew. They do have a great library, as to its quality I do not know.

Re. western classical music, I think you will fine new records of the old recordings - of Karajan, of Barenboim, of Solti, of Previn, even Mehta at a few places. EMI will have those presumably.
