I am looking for lp/ep/shellac of........

I feel Amit Kumars Love Story songs are more popular. Also a couple of songs from Teri Kasam did very well.

>>>

All the songs in Anubhav are haunting and unique. I'd like to know more about the little known Kanu Roy.
Jaidev is a composer who, I think, was not given the credit or the quantity of work that he deserved - full marks to Amol Palekar to utilise his genius with the legendary Bhimsen Joshi in, I think, Ankahee.

A. Two remarkable compilations from a little known film - Sitara.
Lyrics by Gulzar, music by RD Burman :

1. Thodi si zameen thoda aasmaan - Bhupinder & Lata
2. Saath saath tum chalo toh raat raat bhar chalein - Bhupinder & Asha

B. Gaman had one ghazal from the little known (in Bollywood) Shahryar, music by Jaidev, rendered by Suresh Wadkar :

1. Seene mein jalan aankhon mein toofan sa kyun hai

Introspective, very remarkable.

Regards

I was and am referring to Anubhav. Avishkar, by the same director came a couple of years later.
Refer below :

Anubhav (English: Experience; Hindi: ?????) is a 1971 Hindi film by noted director Basu Bhattacharya, which stars Sanjeev Kumar, Tanuja Samarth and Dinesh Thakur as leads. The film was the first part of Basu Battacharya's introspective trilogy on marital discord in an urban setting, which included Avishkaar (1973) and Griha Pravesh (1979); and went on to win the 1972 National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film and started a trend later picked even by the mainstream cinema.

Soundtrack

The film is remembered for its memorable songs sung by Geeta Dutt and Manna Dey, with music by veteran music director Kanu Roy and evocative lyrics by Gulzar.
Song Singer(s)
"Koi Chupke se Aake" Geeta Dutt
"Phir Kahin Koi Phool Khila" Manna Dey
"Mera Dil Jo Mera Hota" Geeta Dutt
"Mujhe Jaan Na Kaho, Meri Jaan" Geeta Dutt
-------------------------------------------------------------

I imagine these compositions would have a niche appeal; nevertheless haunting and surreal. The, use of 'minimalistic' tones is possibly unique, as opposed to the overly 'sweet', 'lush', 'heavy' scores that one normally finds in Hindi film music.

Hi Issigonis

These are the 2 Geeta Dutt songs and the 1 Manna Dey song i was referring to in my earlier posts. Initially i thought these were from Anubhav but when someone mentioned Anubhav stars Shekar Suman, i thought they from Aavishkar. Are these songs on the Anubhav or the Aavishkar lp? I always keep getting confused between these 2 movies. Now that you mention that they are part of a trilogy, it explains.

Anubhav. Anubhav. Anubhav. The Sanjeev Kumar and Tanuja wallah Anubhav. Not some ridiculous new Anubhav.

:D

May I also recommend Seeli hawa chhoo gayee from Libaas ( banned by the Government of India), penned by Gulzar, music by RDB and directed by Gulzar.

I am not familiar with the songs from Lekin (except Yara seeli seeli..), Rudaali and Ijazat, so can't comment.

May I recommend, which you'd know, two absolutely himalayan numbers from Dastak, composed by Lata's favourite Madan bhaiyya, penned by one of my favourites - the Unani doctor from Lucknow - Asrar -ul- Hassan Khan aka Majrooh* :

1. Baiyan na dharo -Lata
2. Mairi ri mein kaase kahun - Lata

The latter was re-released later with Madan Mohan's voice included ( Lata was unwell at some stage in the recording and Madan Mohan had hummed it). Incidentally Madan Mohan is an old boy of St. Mary's Byculla.

* Majrooh is believed to be the person who recommended RDB to its director Nasir Hussain for his significant break in the trend setting Teesri Manzil (the story of how Shammi K overwhelmed RDB during the 'selection' process is another story)

Also, you might like to listen to :
Duniya o duniya, lyrics by Anand Bakshi, music by SD, from the film Naya Zamana. Another introspective gem.
It has another racy number from (surprise) Lata - Rama rama gajab hui gawaari.

Exceptional music.

Regards, enjoy

when and why was this song banned?? didn t knew this. though its a good song. i wasn t an afficianado then. next time i hear it would be the first time.

Yes. There is a Hits of Suman Kayanpur vinyl. But as far as i remember the song selection on that, it had very few of her big hits.

In the early days people believed in buying lps of films. So not too many compilations were made. Also quite a few singer collections were more for songs from films that normally did not have a lp release.

entsurgeon,

You have a point - am not sure if a record was launched or not. Just that the music was launched much later ( around RDB's death I think) than the launch of the film. If the record was released, it would be a collectible.

The film, not just the song, was banned by the government. Credit that to the establishment's predilection of being overly sensitive to 'the nation's sensitivities' and the totally inaccurate perception that Indians are not mature enough to analyse/imbibe/be selective of contrarian ideas. Witness the haste to ban books of all types for dubious reasons, when an honest airing of alternate ideas would help in carrying intellectual arguments/ideas/thoughts forward.

We have the Jazz Age in the commercial sense here but not its intellectual/cultural/literary flowering:sad:

The song is terrific.

Hi Pratimbayal

The lps being discussed here are not available new. They have to be purchased used. There are used lp vendors in Mumbai Delhi. I am sure you will find them in Kolkatta too.

Thanks Prem

Yes used LPs are available in kolkata also . There are few good shops . I have strated collecting already. Was just thinking whether record companies still have some old stock .

Any specific guidelines to know if vinyl is first pressing ? I know foreign pressings has some info in running groove area at the end of vinyl tracks. But for Indian pressing the number codes doesnt tell anything.
Thanks.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
