Ilaiyaraaja

This is OT.

Recently Kamal launched Ninaithale Inikkum (1979) music restored in digital format. Has anyone heard it? Is it original track enhanced or re-mixed? Is it available online?

Some interesting titles are there. Any feedback on the recording quality?

I ordered a collection pack (Ilaiyaraaja - The passion of the early years) and it comes with 4 CDs. They contain songs from films like Johnny, Guru, Priya, Annakili, etc. I need to thank visvan sir for sharing the link.

I have listened to a couple of CDs from that pack and the recording quality is decent for few tracks, average for some and superb for other tracks. I found Guru and Priya recording quality to be top notch. Naturally it would be unfair to expect the tracks recorded in early and mid 80's to have the recording quality of the current ones. Of course there are few exceptions to that.

A little bit off the topic here. I wanted to share my thoughts on this topic of recording quality. It may not be correct or acceptable for others, but perhaps I want to register here. If you are not convinced with my points here, please accept my apologies in advance. I am personally not comfortable when few of us (at least Ilaiyaraja fans) keep harping about the recording quality of the old songs recorded in early/mid 80s. The moment we start comparing with the modern recordings, we will only end up with disappointment. May be, we (including myself) are inherently assuming that the recording quality of the 80s should match or reflect the stature of the hi-fi audio components we currently own. My very personal opinion is that we shouldn't assume that way.

In my case, I just wanted to listen Ilayaraja's compositions irrespective of how well it was recorded and I wanted to hear them through an audio CD rather than through mp3. I will say the mp3 tracks of those tracks recorded in 80s sound very much horrible.

Hope I am not offending anyone.

Check out Agi music - search for ilaiyaraaja remastered in iTunes. Some of the albums like Agni natchatram is very good! Slowly buying some rare collections from there. Good quality encoding for 256 kbps.

That is mostly because it is taken from tapes. Recent ones atleast in iTunes are coming in remastered and great quality. Check ou Va Va pakkam va song from Thanga magan. Simply amazing!

Let me speak up for myself to clarify, I did compare the recording, but I compared it against the same time period, that to a year ago or so.

For example, Nizhalgal which was released in 1980 has an excellent recording, whereas Tik Tik Tik released in 1981(a year after that) had a very mediocre recording. I tried getting from various sources but there are a few albums which had a very normal quality consistently. This is not limited to these two movies, a lot of them. I mean the recording quality should have got improved over the years, right?
But it is on and off for Raja.
Any thoughts on this?

The intent was to understand if my sources were bad, (so that I can buy from a proper source) or was the recording itself was mediocre(so that I can live with that). My intentions were never to question the Maestro or the technology on his days. That is the reason I reached out the community of his fans in the forum.

If we are happy with the existing sources & not looking for quality, then we don't need to discuss on buying CDs, any 128 kbps mp3 source would do good.

Hi cbeshyam,
I completely understand and agree to your point. Yes, the source should be good/original to convey the original recording (even if the original recording itself is just average). You are right that we need to get the right source. The thing I was pointing in my earlier post was the expectation if we have any on the quality of the original recording itself.

Hi cbeshyam,
I completely understand and agree to your point.

Thanks for understanding. My PoV the main plus point for Maestro is his orchestration. Syncing up 64 violins for a song(Thalapathi) during recording is a herculean task. He should have done that because he was an audiophile himself, I don't think Raja would have settled anything for less.

And I loved the beats on "Idhu Oru Kana Kaalam", from Tik Tik Tik. But I was never able to enjoy that in Audio, even youtube video sounds a lot better

I have a hunch that the recording companies have an attitude of selling anything to an Indian Consumer, whom they assume are ignorant.

I happen to meet this person https://www.facebook.com/ERBRecords who claims to have all the 79-80's collection of Illayaraja tracks in Vinyl records. He has almost every single film of Illayaraja's composition. It was mind blowing to see the entire collection. He's near Thiruneermalai, Pallavaram. He has the entire collection available in WAV & FLAC. Moreover he said not all the collections of Raja sir are of good quality. Quality of the recordings depend on the sound engineer who worked in that movie. Also he claimed AGI recording company based out of Malaysia seems to be sourcing the tracks from this person. Didn't validate that information though.
