Just bought Yamaha YHT-299

Hi All,

I'm a newbie to the forum and have been following these threads over the past few months to decide for a good htib package and have a couple of questions.

What is the difference between YHT 299 and YHT 2910 ?

As per official compares I could see a few the 2910 has over 299:
a) Virtual Cinema Front
b) DTS Digital Surround(Is it really missing in the 299/What is the downside of not having this in 299)

Should I go ahead and buy the YHT299 or 2910 given the online price gap is just 4k on snapdeal?

Also should I instead ask someone to get RX-V 377 from US as it costs merely 15k there on Amazon etc and then buy speakers here?

or Should I hold on for a few months so that 2910 prices might drop further?

My Setup

I live in a rented apartment and would like to play music and movies equally.

Tv- Samsung 40"F5500
Blu Ray -Samsung F5500
STB- Videocon D2H HD

I am confident in the quality reviews you folks give out here and this will be my first HTiB.

Thanks in Advance

First and foremost, never ever buy any expensive item from Snapdeal (however I wouldn't spend Rs. 100 to buy anything from them, they have worst customer support, It took 8 months to refund my money and still not got complete refund). Many FMs have worst experience from them and they say "Crapdeal" :D

ok, I have found nothing downside about YHT-299 but price. 299 supports mostly DTS formats as this is not too old model. It has all required features and I guess you will have no need to upgrade it for at least 5-6 years (4K pass, 3D supports etc.)

If you buy any AVR from US, then you have to take care for below things
1. Warranty issues (if any problem occurs in AVR then you will be in trouble)
2. 110V (mostly AVRs from US works on 110 volts, however some are available as multivoltage, you can check before buy. But if you buy 110V, you have to use a 220V to 110V stepdown transformer for it)
3. Custom fee (Buying from Amazon US and importing that to India also includes custom fee.) I am not sure if anybody carries itself and get it without customs.

IMHO Considering all above hassles and landing cost, importing is not good idea.

Hi Appys,

YHT 299 Supports most of the DTS formats. Frankly, this is not really an old system. I guess it was introduced around Aug / Sep last year. So, it supports most of the latest sound formats. It has 4k pass through too.
Infact there is not much of a difference between 299 and 2910. If anything, 299 has better connectivity options. I was really hoping for a good and a powerful sub woofer in 2910. But, its the same one as 299.
If both 299 and 2910 are available, I guess 299 is a better deal.

Thanks,
Sandeep.

I also bought it today in Delhi YHT 299 it is amazing even in default settings....additional 30mtr bandridge cable and one hdmi 4.1 cable....

One time investment and am loving it.

Thanks,
Abhijit Singh

Congratulations Abhijit. Please do share your experience after fully experiencing the system.

Thanks,
Sandeep.

Hi,

First of all don't buy it from snapdeal or any online website because sometime they ship a piece which is already used in demo and you wont be able to judge by the packing and it was my personal experience, specially with snapdeal.

Secondly there is no major difference in YHT 299 and 2910.Just couple of new features with a new name.

Yesterday i bought YHT 299 in Gurgaon. While auditioning i checked 2910 too but there was no difference with respect to sound and the dealer was also agreed on the same.

So i suggest you to get the cheaper 299 and invest in good Speaker/HDMI/Sub cable instead of spending extra money on 2910.

Rest your decision.

Thanks,
Abhijit Singh

Hi Sandeep,

Thanks man, just a quick question have you replaced the sub to av cable with a branded one ?? Or using the one which came with the box ??

I just replaced the speaker cable with bandridge and bought one HDMI Cable 4.1 Channel.

I started the system with David Gueta nonstop mix and the sub is placed near a wall,watching/listening the same my dad suggested to keep it in center as the wall may collapse.

But that was a cautious compliment...:licklips:

Thanks,

Cool so appears DTS Surround is just some mumbo jumbo that yht299 already has..as even AVR 377 tech specs dint have this which apparently seems analogous to yht 2910...

Given this..and No Online recommendation's/no imports...Can anyone point me in the direction to begin my hunt in Bangalore for yht 299?

Friends
I'm a proud owner of 299 since January 2014. I loved it for watching movies. It's amazing in playing movies. But in playing music, I need more BASS. so I'm damn sure to upgrade it's front with FS. please friends suggest some best FS for my 299. My budget is around 20k.
ThanX

If you can stretch your budget a bit then you can buy Sonodyne 2605 V2/3. It sounds great with Yamaha.

Is 35.5 without any freebies a good price point from any brick and mortar store or should I target lesser than this?

:yahoo:Finally found this, Differences between YHT 299 and YHT 2910

The RX-V377/HTR-3067(yht 2910) is the latest model in that series and
has the following differences over the RX-V375/HTR-3066(YHT 299):

1. DC(USB) out for optional accessory. Like YBA-11 Bluetooth adapter
2. Background Video feature (for Radio/USB/AUDIO/AUX input) RX-V375 had radio only.
3. Audio Delay for adjusting Lip-Sync (0-500ms). RX-V375 has 0-250ms.
4. Extra Bass option even with small speakers or no Subwoofer.(Bass Button on Remote for easy access.)
5. Virtual CINEMA FRONT provides virtual surround sound with 5 speakers in front.
6. Removed the Composite Video Input from RX-V377 Front Panel.
7. RX-V377 has only one Audio Analog input, Audio. (RX-V375 has 2, Audio 1 & Audio 2.)
8. RX-V377 has only one Optical input, AV1. (RX-V375 has 2, AV1 & AV4.)
9. Option to change the volume scale from -80 to +16.5dB to 0.5 to 97. (RX-V377 to RX-V577 Models only.)

Power and Demensions are identical.

Hi 299 Owners,

I tried to play mp4/mp3 file from the front USB port of receiver but after connecting hard disk it says no content to play,so are there any specific formats that the receiver support or there are some specific settings for the same.

One more issue i am facing that not getting 5.1 sound on my HD channels just 2.1.[Surround Left/Right + Center speaker not working when connected to Airtel HD Box]

I have my Airtel HD Box Connected >> AV receiver HDMI IN 1 port then from AV receiver HDMI Out >> SONY LED HDMI IN 1.[As per the manual]

Just wondering if i should buy an audio optical cable to connect Airtel HD to AV receiver for complete 5.1 sound ??

Please look into it and suggest.

Thanks,
Abhijit Singh

Hi Abhijit,

AVR only recognises audio files. It does not play videos. Infact its the same with all the AVR's. So, MP4 files will not be recognized by the AVR. But you should be able to play MP3 files. Did you try to connect 1 TB external hdd to the AVR? In that case, AVR does not recognize it. I am not sure why, but it happened with me as well. I guess 1 TB is just too big for this AVR.

As far as dolby sound from your Set top Box is concerned, there should be a setting in the Airtel HD STB which allows you to select dolby sound. I use tata sky and it has a setting to select dolby surround sound. You can refer to the threads in DTH section which can guide you on these settings.

Your connections are fine. This should give you dolby surround.

Thanks,
Sandeep.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
