LG 50PK550R Owner's Discussion Thread

Thanks Vivek.

Keep an eye on the firmware versions (old and new) and specifically ask for update details. Let them explain ;)

LG has database of PK550 buyers. Said they would contact each one for firmware update. Hope this reduces the greens and improves overall picture.

This whole waiting-for-my-PK is getting on my nerves now. and being a LG group employee makes it even more frustrating. I sincerely hope the waiting will be worth it. In teh meantime I cannot decide if I want to upgrade to an Airtel HD box, since they post that ugly red and white logo at the same location for all channels. can that cause a screen burn? so should I take a hd stb from another vendor

Booked the 50PK550 yesterday. The dealer did not have ready stock and promised to make it available next week after discussing with some LG official. Expecting delivery on next Saturday.
Hope will get a set with the new farmware version. Is there any way to check this?

For complaint I had sent an email at <[email protected]>, "tsc-ban" <[email protected]>,

Vivek,
Can I ask you a favor?

When the LG service personnel perform the upgrade can you,
- Note down the exact process to get the firmware update.
Reason : If the LG engineer at my place do not know how to do it, I shall guide him. He didnt know the diff between LCD and Plasma and hence I would not be surprised if he screws this up.
- Also if possible check whether the old firmware can be backed up.
- Also copy the new firmware.
Reason : Just in case, LG engineer at my place does not get hold of the firmware, I can get him with service remote and do the update myself.
And I would like to keep a backup of old one just in case I want to revert.

And by the way what exactly you put in the complaint?

No issues, dotmac, will note and inform.

The exact complaint I registered was as below

"This is information I have received for the LG PK 550 from another owner in Mumbai.

"I had a new PK550R delivered an hour back. Technicians from Pune had come to deliver the set. Good news is that they have addressed the overly green pixel problem to a great extent (almost gone) with a new firmware. It will be available to everyone in 2 weeks time and installed by LG service person."

Can this be looked into urgently and the case reopened. As you had mentioned as soon as you get some update, I can start the case and this issues can be fixed."

@@@@@@@@

Based on this they called me back and fixed a time to do the firmware update.

Now that we have crossed 40 pages in this forum on Shrek issue, guess we forgot about the rest. So should get back to the other aspects :)

Shaiju,
How is it going with the new tv/firmware. Any other improvement you have seen?
Anyone else got the new firmware loaded?

All Owners,
Anyone tried calibrating this TV? Any suggestion on the settings?

I am planning to dedicate my next weekend on some calibration. i.e. If I could get the firmware on my TV. :)

Somewhere else:
"There was an initial panic when it didn't pass the HD audio to my amp for decoding, but it the stupidly named "BD Interactive Audio" setting set to OFF I forgot to set, and before you know it, glorious DTS-MA and DD True HD came shining through. "

Hope something works :)

Hi.
Today I saw 60" PK550. Its huge and I saw the sticker Made In Korea. When I inquired Sales guy in Bajaj Electronics about 60" PK950 he said that all the LG TVs above 50" will be directly imported from Korea and rest will be assembled here in India.
Any inputs on this matter are welcome. My biggest worry is whether these are suffering from same issues of Indian models and how reliable on the made in Korea statement.

@Shaiju: I thought you got a replacement TV with latest firmware update and made peace with your set. What is your current opinion on your set?

Thanks
Satya.

Idlebrain that's probably true. Even I heard the same thing from one of the dealers here - sizes larger than 50" would be fully imported while sizes upto 50" would be assembled here.

Same is the case with my new 50PJ560. The side mounted speakers have the Made in Korea label, while the TV says Made in India at the back. These would be clear in the snaps that I will be posting in the next day or two. Have to transfer the photos from my phone and digital camera.

As for price of the 60 inch models, there was a consumer electronics fair here in Chennai about 2 weeks back, and the 60PK950 was on display. It looked great (picture quality wise, and excellent blacks) and was fully loaded - Tru-Black Filter, WiFi, USB with HD capability, 4 HDMI inputs, ultra slim panel and bezel, Full HD, Bluetooth etc. The MRP of the 60PK950 is 170k while my dealer said his best price for this would be 108k.

So I presume the 60PK550 should have a street price of less than 100k. Maybe around 90-95k?

Hmm ... how I wish they had launched the 50PK950 here, as it is available outside. I would have gladly paid an extra 10k for that model. It would not have been priced at more than 75k in any case and would have been fully worth it, compared to a Panasonic 50V20 costing 115k. Anyway ... my TV purchase for now is done and my next plasma in 2-3 years would be a 60 or 65 inch model at the least, if not bigger.
