Looking to buy my first Plasma TV: 42UT30/u30/xt30/LG PW450/PT350/PA 4500

aakashr, Is there some issue with ut30? If so I may have to go for Samsung 43e450 or Pana 42x30, as I may not be able to extend budget to get higher series Panasonic plasma.

He means UT30 vs ST30 and VT20, the VT20 is better followed by ST30.
The ST30 was only 8k INR more than UT30 in mrp and is so much better.

E450 will not compare to UT30 any favorably at all. Dont even think about it if you are getting the UT30 for the same price.

After a fresh round of enquiries, found out that the 42ST30 is almost 18k INR costlier than 42ut30. Thats too much of a stretch.
Now the challenge is getting a boxed piece of 42ut30. Almost all the Pana showroom are out of stock w.r.t 42 inch models, be it ST, UT, GT! Only 42X30 is available everywhere.
All of these places have 50 inchers galore! But 50 inch is too big for my room, else I would have gone for 50ut30 for 10k more than the 42 inch one.

So it boils down to 42ut30 vs Samsung 43e450!

Got the LG PA4520 today, put it on stand and connected it to Airtel HD STB via HDMI. Got a boxed, sealed piece which was opened before me in the LG shoppe showroom. The stapled seal on the box was broken before me and was given a demo at the showroom itself. PQ seemed equal to the LG LEDs nearby and the best news was the superlative quality of the SD channels. Whatever be the reason, be it the resolution upscaler built in or the HDMI input for SD channels, the SD channels look almost HD, there is no motion blur, no ghosting as found in another showroom during playback of SD channels on a Bravia, Samsung LEDs. There are 3 energy modes which reduce brightness and contrast and save energy. Rated power consumption is given as 300Watts which is near the border of what my APC UPS can support. Hope running consumption normally is around 120-140Ws. A significant point is that there seems to be no issues with glare on the TV since there is a reading lamp bang opposite the TV and yet there is no reflection of the same.

The bezel is really slim giving a more theatre experience. Warranty is supposed to be 1+4 years in AMC. Have mounted the TV on a stand, since the wall mounting is supposed to be done by the LG service who will come only tomorrow. 42 inches looks really large in my room and a whole wall is filled with this TV. Don't know how to access service menu, maybe I can ask the LG service guys tomorrow.

Yeah, both are the same price. The only two reasons to get the 43e450 over the ut30 is if the samsung plays sd content much better and if the ut30 is not available at all.

so the PA4520 comes with a 5amps plug which is a big relief and no hassles as the E450/470 15amps one.

few pics from the LG taken with a 2 MP BB
so excuse the quality

Yes, it seems to be very potent at processing the SD signal into something very watchable on a large screen. Perhaps something LG does better than competition. I have a HD recorder in another room, I can connect that and get a few still frames.

A few more SD shots.

Manish, I suggest you refrain from quoting the entire post with pictures as it makes the page more difficult to load for users. No offense meant.

And btw, my efforts to get the 42ut30 are yet to bear fruition! No stock anywhere. They only have the 500UT30.

Hi iaudio,
Did you made your purchase? 42UT30 is available readily in Saudi Arabia for around 28K INR. I have checked the prices in eXtra (electronics superstore in Saudi). http://www.extrastores.com/Site/ProductDetails.aspx?Page=OnSale&ProductID=2242970.

Samsung43E450 is priced around 21K. I am being tempted to buy one of these. I was keenly following up your thread to decide which one of these two are better if the consideration of 3D and Full HD are kept aside for a while.

sridheeraj, I personally found the Samsung to be almost as good as the UT30. And I think I liked the 43e450 more than the x30. But then again, these are short viewing comparisons which I could do side by side. (UT30 wasnt compared in the same shop, it was from memory)

rjames, I am not sure about the differences, the e450 and e470 are pretty much similar I think. The e450 is the overseas model.
The e490 on the other hand, has 3D.

iaudio , I am planning to buy 43E470 in near future (waiting for diwali offers). Is it best option compared to Pana 42X50D ?I
I will be missing 3 years warranty compared to Samy's 1 year. Am I doing more compromise on PQ or 43E470 is good enough?

Just logged in to report that the SD content has got even better on the plasma. After an HD STB update. Really can't make out the difference sometimes between HD and SD channels because the difference in details is getting very minor. It seems LG has mastered the upscaling algorithm better than anybody else ATM. Also I have a nagging feeling that the Plasma dims itself on certain days though doesn't show any change in settings. Is it some hidden code to prevent burn in, I know not. Searching the market for some good quality swivel-type wall mounts that can be used for the PA4520 model, suggestions are welcome.

Stay away from the Panasonic ??30 models. Look at ??50 models only.

When I did my own shopping, I looked at LEDs and Plasma alike. I thought that LG Cinema 3D models were best looking but very overpriced. But since you are considering plasma only, I will say as follows:

Pana VT50: Not available. 65" only. 3.5 lakhs!! Out of contention.
Pana GT50: Extremely good but slightly overpriced. This was my first choice but for price. No other plasma save ST50 came close. Rival: Sammy 8 Series plasma (on specs) and included 4 glasses. But was not available and hence did not look.
Pana ST50: Near as good as GT50. Selected. Rival: Sammy 8 Series plasma (on specs) and included 4 glasses. But was not available and hence did not look.
Pana UT50 and Sammy E550: Almost same. I felt the Sammy was slightly better.
Pana XT50 and Sammy E490: Almost same.
Pana X50 and Sammy E470: Almost same.

just4kix, thanks for that informative post!

I am probably going to wait it out to see if any plasmas come back on the shelves.
If not I might commit sacrilege and go in for a normal budget 40" LED.
