Hi

I would like to buy av receiver which is most reliable? Should go for min 5 yrs without any problems

Can anyone tell me which is the most reliable brand out of these? I had Marantz PM7001 stereo amp for 3 years (under warranty) and I got only minor problem (kirkling sound when volume knob is turned) and that was rectified under warranty.

I am using my Onkyo for around 5 years. But many has reported Yamaha to work upto 10yrs easily.

Dont expect the latest BUDGET AVR's to work for longer time. The Older AVR's were built like a Tank. My friend is Using a Marantz AVR for nearly 10 years and it should weigh more then 20kgs. Now a days the transformers are so small and I doubt these can withstand the current fluctuation for a longer period of time. Also the Formats keep on changing and you are forced to upgrade in 3-4 years. Use proper Power conditioner , so that your system is protected from fluctuations. Also clean the amp regularly and cover the amp with a soft cloth when not in use.

regards

I agree with soundofmusic the new generation amps, especially the entry/mid level ones do not have the quality of years past.

If you were to ask me for my personal opinion where I have owned and/or operated these equipments the answer would be as follows -

1) Marantz (more expensive than the rest, but it shows, in general better sound when compared with equivalent models, but also more expensive, quality and service in general are high - it helps that I know a distributor personally!)
2) Yamaha (Never owned, but know friends who have older ones and they ARE indeed built link Tanks)
3) Onkyo/Denon (I have always felt Onkyo as flimsy and personally had bad experiences with Denon)

Hi

I had used Yamaha DIGITAL TOP ART RXV 800 then changed to Onkyo 898 then upgraded to Marantz SR 9600. In my opinion Marantz in overall performance was better than the earlier two brands. It was not getting heated up during long usages at high volumes. The menu structure in marantz was user friendly. The DSP in Yamaha was over coloured and some times felt very much artificial. ONkyo was fairly a better receiver compared to Yamaha. Only thing was the menu structure was requiring a little bit of expertise and knowhow. Hope this is helpful for you to have a fair idea on these three brands.

A point to mention is that I had used the same set of Speaker package with every two amps as the upgrade of the speakers was not in parallel with the amps. So the comparison was status co with regard to the other peripherals of the HT system.

Thanks

My onkyo comfortably entering it's 4th year and I am sure we need not ask anything more than 4+ yrs for the current gen AVRs. Let me see how good my new 609 will run :)

Actually nowadays all the av receivers are made in china and thats the reason I'm more concerned about.

And regarding Marantz, in their website it clearly shows "Marantz comes with 3 year warranty" and even mzaudiodistribution website it says the but when I checked with local dealer in chennai (Home Theater Solutions) he says Marantz comes with only 1 yr warranty. He says distributor has to give remaining 2 yrs warranty and this is not possible. I don't what to do about this

Try searching for Denon 1507 amp. It is not a very old model but very good in build quality for a budget avr and sounds musical.

Yamaha DSP AX 763 is also a good model ( though I have not heard this one myself. )

I have owned 2 Yamahas, an Onkyo, and presently a Marantz. As far as reliability, I would certainly vote Yamaha hands down.

Between Yamaha RX-v373/HTR 3065 and Onkyo HT-S5500, which one would be more reliable as a brand, and which one would be recommended in terms of performance and after-sales service in India ?

Everyone will have different opinions. Evryone will have different experonce with different companies and that can not be the same.

Some says Yamaha is reliable, some says Denon. Whereas some people will say Marantz.

In general what I have seen Yamaha/Denno/Onkyo/Pioneer all are similar, it all depends upon your experience. If you sum up everyone's opinion you'll not end up at the conclusion except confusion.

Marantz is little high up than these breed of AVRs and generally considered reliable.

So devise your budget. Compare the features etc. If you want feature loaded AVR then you would probably go for Yamaha/Denon/Onkyo and if you don't want features but just want Marantz then you'll buy marantz only as some people really give a very high to performance.

But again you have to demo them and compare as per your preference and taste.

My opinion is that older AVRs be it Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha or Marantz are definitely better than any of the same companies current crop of receivers. These are the reasons that I feel are primary:

1) People want mobile phone connectivity and see connecting their "IPOD" or any such MP3 fangled devices as of primary importance.

2) Companies are forced to overlook build quality over flimsy features like MHL, HDMI and what nots (I still fail to understand the problem of connecting 7 different wires for audio.

3) The primary thing to be looked for would be AUDIO then VIDEO but people are also usually concerned more about the upscaling ability of an AVR.

4) This kind of feature laden AVRs lead to a compromise on the build quality by using weaker EL core transformers and other associated electronics. I am sure many of the AV gurus in our forum would support this.

5) This leads to generally newer AVRs to have more problems than old ones which are generally of better build quality than the newer ones.

There are many more but these were what I could think off.

You would be better off choosing "a balls to walls" older model having solid electronics and core features like good transformers, heavy gauge construction and good electronics than any newer AVRs, but then THIS IS JUST MY VIEW POINT.

Funnily my friend has a Denon AVC-A11SR that I wanted to buy off but the budget was not permitting (Rs 40,000).

Just go thru this fantastic thread by Rishiguru to start you off:

I've had a Denon AVR 3801 since May 2000. Still working strong but now outdated with no HDMI inputs. Just replaced my TV, so I need to upgrade receiver and I'll be replacing with another Denon only because it has been so reliable.
