My opinion is that older AVRs be it Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha or Marantz are definitely better than any of the same companies current crop of receivers. These are the reasons that I feel are primary:
1) People want mobile phone connectivity and see connecting their "IPOD" or any such MP3 fangled devices as of primary importance.
2) Companies are forced to overlook build quality over flimsy features like MHL, HDMI and what nots (I still fail to understand the problem of connecting 7 different wires for audio.
3) The primary thing to be looked for would be AUDIO then VIDEO but people are also usually concerned more about the upscaling ability of an AVR.
4) This kind of feature laden AVRs lead to a compromise on the build quality by using weaker EL core transformers and other associated electronics. I am sure many of the AV gurus in our forum would support this.
5) This leads to generally newer AVRs to have more problems than old ones which are generally of better build quality than the newer ones.
There are many more but these were what I could think off.
You would be better off choosing "a balls to walls" older model having solid electronics and core features like good transformers, heavy gauge construction and good electronics than any newer AVRs, but then THIS IS JUST MY VIEW POINT.
Funnily my friend has a Denon AVC-A11SR that I wanted to buy off but the budget was not permitting (Rs 40,000).
