Most Reliable Brand? Denon/Onkyo/Yamaha/Marantz

I've had a Denon AVR 3801 since May 2000. Still working strong but now outdated with no HDMI inputs. Just replaced my TV, so I need to upgrade receiver and I'll be replacing with another Denon only because it has been so reliable.

There is no non-reliable brand in those we discussed in this thread. Audition each, before you make a call. Almost all of them will surely run for 5+ years without any issues, unless you stay in a place with frequent power fluctuations

Denon/Marantz:
I have had Marantz PM7001 for 6 years. No issues.
Recently acquired Marantz NR1605. Does its job, but personally I feel it could have been a bit less plastic-ky. Denon and Marantz are from the same holding company. So expect similar quality of components in comparable ranges. Marantz may go thru a few more QC checks.

Onkyo:
My dad has had an Onkyo TX-DS595 (pre-HDMI model) for the last 13 years and there have been no issues. Can't comment on the newer models.

Yamaha:
Personally, I have not owned Yamaha nor do I know of anybody who has. But Yamaha has a wide presence in India. So it should be OK.

All this said, if things go bad, you may still end up with a "lemon", in which case the warranty and serviceability should be an important consideration.

Cheers,
Raghu

In India, only Yamaha has nation wide presence as far as after sales service is concerned. Denon/ Marantz/Onkyo's after sales service is provided by distributors only; and for this it's time consuming and pricy. Quality wise all present day's AVRs are same. Yamaha India has huge product line, from musical instruments to home AV products and thus has service centres across India. Repairing cost is also reasonable for Yamaha products. Yamaha India website clearly mentions service charge for each and every model/series/ product line whereas if you have some other brand and if your hometown doesn't have service centre of that particular brand, you have to send it to Mumbai or Delhi or Bangalore, thus it's time consuming and service charge is not uniform as it depends entirely on dealer/distributor's whims and fancy.

I was having YAMAHA amp for ten yrs and now owning ONKYO amp for six yrs. Both did not give any problems.

I've used a Pioneer VSX and a Marantz in the US and now using a Marantz SR6007 in India. My next door neighbor has a Yamaha and even though I find its sound a little muted but produces great bass. Subjectivity???

All the brands mentioned by you are great and reliable in their own accord. Keep in mind Denon and Marantz are part of the same company (D&M holdings) with emphasis on different audio/video DNA.
I feel the biggest reason for failure of AVRs and other electronics is the quality of current in our country. Add your apartment's generator back-up (if you live in one) and that essentially completes the reasons for a havoc on sensitive circuitry.

Since you have already owned a Marantz, you would find other receiver's a little less musical. But again, you are going for a HT setup and might be looking for a higher wattage AMP in the AVR with not so much dynamic headroom as a Marantz.

This is what I would do. With the speakers already shortlisted, I would try to audition AVRs in my price range with my speaker pair. This forum can help you do that and is easier than you may think it is. Cut a list of essential features and buy the AVR which meets my requirements closely. Invest in a good power conditioner and I would be good to go.

A discussion on power conditioners is yet another topic. If you need advise, let me know. I came across a very nice and pretty lengthy thread on this forum that helped me a lot when I moved to Bangalore. I would fish that thread out for you if you are interested.
