Musical Fidelity M1 DAC-A - HotDeal.

This saturday is going to be a dissection day... going to use DAC through USB and compare it with current WDTV> Optical > DAC connection....

Hey soul, As I mentioned earlier, the coax input was better than optical. Don't ask me why or how, I dont know. :)

So tryout the coax too.

@Blasto I upgraded to the A1008 because when the M3i was connected to the Thiels, bass was poorly reproduced, the highs hardened and music was less smooth. Basically at 70WPC, the M3i had a hard time driving the Thiels.

I have auditioned the M1 DAC at the store on three different occasions with different amps, CD players and speakers. Blasto was there in one of the sessions, and we both noticed significant sonic improvement with the M1DAC even compared to DAC of higher-end CD player like the A1008 or the M6i.

When I went home and connected the M1 DAC to my system (CDP---optical---M1DAC; DAT---coax---M1DAC; Macbookpro---USB---M1DAC), I noticed significant improvements. After a week, I did a comparison of CDP---optical----M1DAC with CDP---analog RCA---amp playing the same music and switching between the two. I couldn't make it out much difference. I was playing tabla solo. Maybe with Jazz I would have noticed a difference. I didn't have a chance to find out because I upgraded to the A1008amp with its integrated DAC and returned the M1DAC.

Interesting discussions in the past few hours, quite a learning too ! looking forward to do my demo of MF DAC in the next 3 / 4 days .thanks

@soulofmusic, laptop analog out will suck (in most circumstances). Are you saying that sonic performance is worse with WDTV--optical--M1DAC compared to laptop analog out? That's really surprising. Please try another CD player. I don't think there is anything wrong with the M3i, it is a really good amp.

Divakar, yes I would say laptop analog out was 'cleaner' (though duller) than wdtv+m1dac combo. wdtv+m1dac sound is definitely livelier, but as i move the knob beyond 1o'clock position, i start getting uncomfy... bass takes over and it start sounding jittery.

Last nite I played Pink Floyd & Linkin Park, though the music was hitting you but u could notice that its not as clean... especially LP songs that uses a lot of electronics and need clean output... Crawling can sound juz plain noise if sound is not good...

anywaz... its too early to judge as it is based on my first 3-4hrs of listening...especially it being late nite, i could hardly play loud music for 10mins ;)

as i said, i m keeping my fingers crossed!

I have never gone beyond the 12 o'clock mark for any amp I have owned :) I imagine what you are hearing beyond 1 o'clock may be distortion so can't blame the M1 DAC for that :)

I read Marc Anthony from musical fidelity say that any amp below 0.5 kw (!!!) will produce clipping when driving any speaker. For many, the distortion/artefact is seen to be a characteristic of the equipment (amp/speakers etc). So when they discuss the sound as being "warm", "airy", "taut" they are discussing distortion :) Musical fidelity's goal is to reproduce the music as it was recorded without any coloration.

Sorry for the OT, but are we meeting tomorrow @ hyd for a dac compare ? Captain you in town this weekend ? Sajjad/Basto/Krish ? Eagerly waiting for a side by side with
the M1.

My DAC is ready but going to office tomorrow.
Will meet Sunday.

Sunday is fine with me. In fact Sunday is ideal. Please guys fix up a time. Rajesh sir, hope Sunday is not a problem for you.

Is this meet open for others also?
If so, I would like to join and bring my Beresford Caiman (with Gator board) DAC for comparision.
