hi friends,

today i purchased the Philips FA391 stereo amplifier from a forum member ( kapvin ). I also managed to integrate the stereo amp with my AVR using the pre outs. The sound is very good !!

Thanks kapvin !!

Kapvin has a very nice setup and i wish you all the best for your sale. the deals which you put up are very reasonable indeed.

Now i have to figure out ( at leisure ) to calibrate the system ( incl the stereo amp ) for 5.1 applications. Hope that will be possible and also the best possible connections linking up my TV, AVR, DVD player and the stereo amp.

Will post more listening impressions maybe in about a week to 10 days after i have had the chance to listen to more music. Next week is full of travel hope i can get some time to enjoy the music as well.

I think this should take care of the "stereo itch " and maybe in a few months i should save up enough for a good center channel from Paradigm to match the titans ( not that i am having any trouble with the JBL's ).

Also.. may thanks to the JBL store Mumbai.. a quick phone call to them and they could solve the AVR settings regarding the pre outs.

PS : wonder why Philips stopped making hifi stereo stuff.. this one sounds good. Philips is tne company that has many many inventions but has somehow not capitalized on them.

best regards,
mpw

Congratts!
Very good amp - I had its older brother...FA 951
BTW it is remote controllable ,and many universal remotes have philips codes.

Have you got it's manual ?
or it can be downloaded from
http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/f/fa931_01s/fa931_01s_dfu_eng.pdf

Or PM me i'll mail you.

Also very good phono stage and Pre power seprable .. so huge flexibality.

In audiophile world the names Philips and Sony are never taken with respect but remember these companies are those who invented formats ( Philips -Casette and DCC, Sony and Philips -CD ,Sony - Minidisk)and this amp was introduced when philips used owe marantz!

Enjoy your music!Let t rock!

thanks hemant. I have huge respect for Philips. Dad used to work there for more than 30 years. In fact i always dreamed of joining Philips after engineering but maybe i was not good enough.

Kapvin had the instruction manual too.

thanks for your post and encouragement.

last night i pushed the voulme to minus 10 on the AVR and at 12 o clock position on the stereo amp.. thought i could hear a mild cracking noise from the front speakers.. but i suppose that could be from the recording as well..

more listening will tell..

regards,
mpw

if it's coming at the same point it's the music.

otherwise it could be carbon build up on the volume pot. especially if it is happening at one volume level and not at others.. that's an easy problem to fix, there are many homegrown solutions for that..

cheers

Hi folks,

Just received the Fa931 - with some minor repairs back from Akshay. Plugged it in and now the the "krrrrk" sound from the speakers is gone. Just changed a few IC's linked to the source selector switch and put better capacitors.

here is a picture of my setup now.. have commected the Stereo Amp thru the AVR pre outs.. i will listen some more maybe 60 hours and then put in my impression about the stereo amp again !!

Am looking at a good center channel speaker but i dont have much space below the TV and the audio rack which houses the AVR and the DVD player.. i realise.. could have been better designed to accomodate more equipment..

Hmmm... will iron out one by one...

regards,
mpw

Hi,

It is surprising to note the qualitative difference in sound when i connect the Pioneer
DV410 DVD player to the FA931 amplifier directly. The sharpness of the sound is much improved and so is the delivery. Am sure a better amp will perform better too. Right now i am quite OK with this setup.

also.. i need to hear other amps and see other setups too to firm up my frame of reference.

Yea - i would have liked more bass ( yessss.. even more bass in a 2 ch mode ) but i guess i would have to step into FS territory for that.

gave my DVDP to Akshay for some mods to improve the sound. Hoping to get it back next week.

I have this kick for doing things and disturbing the inertia.. take a perectly good DVDP and turn it over for a modification.. woow !!

Next item.. is to fill in white sand into my speaker stand column and see how it goes.. but thats after this experiment is done and dusted !!

regards,
mpw

mpw, congrats on the new addition to your set up. Hope it brings an improvement to your satisfaction. Who's Akshay if I may ask?
Good luck with the mods.

Hi Mahesh
Glad to know that you gave the amp to Akshay for repairs and also for modding your DVDp
Your amp will perform to its best when connected directly with the DVDP rather then using the Philips through pre-outs of your AVR
As i had told you earlier, keep 2 pairs of speaker cables and put banana plugs on one side, so you switch the cables easily. Tha way you can connect the speakers to the AVR and the stereo amp in no time
The mods on the DVDp will surely make a difference. But if you can alter your speaker placment it will make quiet a bit of difference.

Doing well
Tell Akshay to get some decent banana plugs when he visits LT road. You can collect from him when you go to collect your DVDp

Are you sure he is a paradigm dealer? I spoke to KEI who are the distributor and he mentioned that Absolute Phase (Prithvi) as the only official dealer in bangalore.

The surrounds were 25k and 15k in Mumbai. Do note the 25k ones are dipiole while the lower price one was direct radiating. I vaguely remember the price of the middle of the line center to be in the 25k range.

Hi Kittu,
Yes we at KEI are the distributors for Paradigm in India. Currently most items have been out of stock for sometime due to shipment disruptions and other reasons. We are receiving two large shipments later this month and you should be able to audition most of products with our dealers in Bangalore. We as distributors are not allowed to bill directly to customers, but will align you with one of our dealers in Bangalore to take this forward.

Dealer Details;
Rontek Systems - Mr. Jacob
Phone: +91 98450 47290.

I am quite sure Mr. Jacob will be able to better advise you on your HT setup keeping in mind your taste in music.
I have kept Mr. Jacob in Cc- so he can contact you as well.

Thank you,
Vishal

Fyi :)

I just got the rates for ADP 390 as 45k and the cc390 as 35k. With these prices I am dropping my idea of Paradigms. Buying surrounds for the cost of FS seems a bit ridiculous.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
