New house construction - dedicated home theater room - initial questions

Hi John, the location of the door is probably the only thing which will affect the room acoustically. Try to locate the door away from reflection points, preferably on the sidewall and behind the listening position. A heavy door will ensure that it does not rattle at loud heavy bass music. Avoid windows if you can help it. I would suggest you go to realtraps.com and read the articles on acoustic treatment. Cheers.

Guys, after a lot of thought, I have gone for Aurica corner bass traps + Aurica pyramidal acoustic foam (for walls) for my HT room. Therefore, I won't need to make panels and stuff.

I am looking forward to suggestion how to go about the room; how to make it look aesthetically good, while at the same time using these acoustic foam.

Cheers!

Guys, bumping up this thread.

I need to fix an exhaust fan in my upcoming HT room. Reason, in cooler months, there is no need of AC. No fan either. Then, I will need something for ventilation. What is a good and silent exhaust fan. I am going to open the exhaust to the Inside of the house (staircase) and not outside. Which is a good and silent exhaust fan for a 200 sq feet room?

Went looking for recliners the last few days.

Between Home Town, StyleSpa, Damro, and Godrej Interio.

Home Town: Most basic, 2 varieties, one smaller (fabric) @ around 15K and one larger (synthetic/rexine) @20K.

StyleSpa: 26K with discount (leather?) Large, looked okay, but a bit stiff.

Damro: Fabric, 20 k or so after discount. Did not like the fabric. Felt too "wrinkly."

Godrej Interio: Saw one very soft rexine one. Probably called Rhine. I kind of liked it. A 3 seater one and 2 single seaters. The 3 seater's middle seat folds up to double as a small table, which is a plus. So I am thinking of going with it. Come to 72k odd for 3+ 1 + 1 Any feedback on Godrej Interio?

Thanks Echo77, they had good offers. Booked myself an Elmwood 3 +1 +1

Re: Lighting options

Hi Guys,

Have put a fibre-based false ceiling. The structure is put up. Now I want to put some lights on the ceiling. Don't want to cut the acoustic ceiling, so I was thinking of spot lights like this. I am planning 6 such lamps, 3 on side of each wall. There will be posters on each wall (interspersed between the acoustic panels), so I want the lights to act as spot + lighting at the same time.

But won't it create shadows with light coming off the projector as well as from the light coming off the screen? Your views please.

The other option is going for surface ceiling lights with halogen bulbs which will be all dimmable. Is there any good remote-controlled dimmer?

Secondly, time for me to buy a ceiling mount for the projector. Please let me know which one to go with. At present my projector is Optoma HD65. Should I get the one from Amazon?

Or something from Monoprice? Or any other suggestions please?

Big question: How do I fix the projector mount to the ceiling. The false ceiling is approx 11 inches below the concrete ceiling above it. Do I first fix a frame of wood to the concrete ceiling. Then fix the mount to the wood? How do I extend it below the false ceiling. I don't want a motorized setup.

Thanks in advance guys.

Hi
What was the final price for elmwood 3 + 1 +1 ?
Am considering one too, did you get any discount ?

You got PM.

Folks, have any one you installed a wall-mounted fan in your HT room. The reason I am saying that is often it is not hot enough to use the AC and all you can do is with a gentle breeze from a wall-mounted fan. Is there any silent model for wall-mounted fan?

Thanks in advance.

Yep, I have been looking for recliners for a while now, so it did not take me long to decide. I had a long talk with them, and also asked the opinion of a friend who has seen these. So I took the plunge. The other option I was seriously considering was Godrej Interio.

John, May I know how much it has costed to build that private theater room.

Hi,

Work is still under progress, so I will know details only in a few weeks.

So far work done is minimal:
Concealed wiring (part of building cost).
Acoustic ceiling (10K or less)
Exhaust fans (4K)
3 + 1 +1 recliner 70K
Bass traps + foam acoustic panels (Aurica) 18k.

To be bought: Projector mount, DIY laminate screen, some carpentry work for making stage + riser for 2nd rows of seats, wallpaper, electrical lamps (with dimmer).

thanks John, btw how much is the construction cost of the room

Hi Kaptan, I have to look it up. But just for calculation sake, the civil construction comes to around 1200 to 1500 per sq feet, I think, this is up to plaster work. Add in putty work which is I think Rs 7 per sq feet. Room is 200 sq feet. Wall 8 feet high.

John - What kind of acoustic ceiling you got done inside 10K? Can you please give me all the details? I have left the ceiling of my HT bare and painted it black because i couldn't get anything for less. Please give me more details.

Sash, I will take a picture and post it soon. It is something like Armstrong Acoustic tiles, but it is a Chinese brand, and so it is cheaper. It is almost slightly more rigid when compared to Armstrong acoustic tiles (The Armstrong ones is so flaky and soft; it just breaks off). It comes in 2 ' x 2' and it costs quite less, I think Rs 120/- per tile. With framing and labor, cost does not exceed 10K.

I also got some bass traps & foam panels from Bajaao.com sale (Aurica panels/traps).

John -
Please give me the contact of the chinese tile dealer - either here or through a PM.
It might be a good idea to go for the Aurica foam rather than fabric covered panels. In my case, i have made DIY acoustic panels using fibreglass and covered it with Cloth. The problem is dust settles on the cloth and the whole room smells dusty and it can irritate your respiratory tract. The dust is not fibreglass - that i'm sure as i have secured the fibreglass with thin foam and it doesn't smell like fibreglass. Don't ask me where the dust comes from - i open the windows for like 20 mins every day to let in fresh air and seems like that is enough to bring dust in.
It's bothering me really. Anyone else having this problem?

Sure Sash, I got it locally from my town. I will give you the Brand name with photo when I am at the site. Please give me a day.

I was also thinking of glasswool, but I gave up the idea as there are kids in the house. I don't want to expose them to anything that might crop up years later. That is why I decided on something inert like acoustic foam. It might not look good (acoustic foam), but it will do the work well, I think.
