Onkyo HT s3400 Owner's thread

Hi
If you intend to watch mostly tv channels then there is no point in getting a 5.1 system. You can better go for a couple of good bookshelves and use the tv-out cable and connect and still can enjoy good sound compared to the tv speakers.
But to be sure that if you want to see a blu-ray or a dvd movie in 5.1 then 3400 will surely keep you future ready.

Thanks

using 3400, still i can get better sound than TV for normal channels, rite?
I will be watching dvds also, but mostly will be TV viewing.

what will happen to sound when watching TV channels connected to 3400? will that give good 2.1 sound when compared to bookshelves

Yes you will get better sound compared to the tv but as most of the times it would not be 5.1 the processor in 3400 might make it artificial 5.1 and gives out the same kind of sound in all the speakers like say surround sound speakers even though the sound is not. If you like this kind of sound then you can go ahead.

Thanks

if you have a HD STB box then you can watch HD channels with 5.1 dolby surround, and for normal channels there are 2 preset modes calles DTS Neo 6 and Dolby Prologic which will simulate 5.1 effects but it will make the dialogues come from center channel the most which will be good

any day sound from AVR is always better than any TV

I am afraid, you can't.
The receiver can output signal only from one input at a time.

there is a way in denon AVRs and I am sure will be in Onkyo also, so set another digital input like optical or coaxial along with HDMI and from input selector you when you select that digital singla you can get different source sound mixed with HDMI pictures, I do this more often that watch TV and listen to music same time but dont forget to change the input settings back to auto or HDMI else you will not get any audio from that HDMI source

Not really, because their other products are priced at par. Also it doesn't make sense to operate business from outside the country with higher price tag. No one will buy then :)

What is unreal here? Check the item location "Item location: Garfield, New Jersey, United States"
So it is a import!

Please help me clear my doubt.

Onkyo 3400 is a 5.1 system. Most of our TV channels broadcast through DTH are 2 channel only. only few HD channels 5.1
So is it useful to buy 5.1 if the main usage is only watching TV channels?

What will happen to 2 channel sound when connected to 3400.

i too had this doubt and faced poorest clarity , often felt tv is better than onkyo..
then i tried instead of connecting audio via hdmi, connect as audio l&r( via av cable)... u get beautiful dolby out if u set audyseey....
its really superb..
so better forget hdmi ( use it for tv), and connect via av(receiver)... enjoy
forget ur dolby/ 5.1 hd channels...
the conversion of stereo to 5.1 is 10000 times better than ur original 5.1(((unless u got 5.1/7.1 dts-hd bluray source ,,, dolby tru hd is not so good than onkyo conversion)))
enjoy onkyo with stereo input than hdmi...
i own 508, 7.1 speaker system and bluray.. yet stereo input gives good sound boost than original source 5.1( except dts)

its surprising you liked the normal av audio better than hdmi, ideally even if the hdmi is not pasing 5.1 it should be as good as normal 2 channel..

does the 3400 AVR supports audyssey setup ? if it does then run it and yeah set the crossover freq of all the speakers to 120 HZ and see if you feel any difference

and yeah type of speakers will also make a lot of difference in sound quality

u need to connect the optical out of airtel hd to the receiver as airtel passes 5.1 thru optical and connect the the hdmi to the tv. blu ray/hd player hdmi you can connect to the hdmi in of the receiver and the hdmi out of the optical receiver to the tv.

if you only connect optical out to avr and hdmi to TV then you will get HD channel's sound in 5.1 from AVR but normal channel's sound from TV ? how wierd will that be :) did you resolve this issue in ur setup :)

Well the unreal part is not all their products are over-priced! Try and understand. Only the S3400 is almost 10K higher than local market. Now explain me what's real here?

The post to which you replied said this
"Shopyourworld is quoting higher because its an import directly from US. So they have added shipping plus customs, etc."

which is "real". They are importing from US. They add shipping and customer. You said to this "Not really".

And what about their other products which are priced at par with other Indian sellers?

The logic of shipping and custom only adding to the s3400! :)

Hi,
I recently got Onkyo 3400 and I'm already loving it. I'm yet to calibrate it and play around with it. As of now I have connected as below

Airtel HD DVR ---HDMI---> Panny ST30
Airtel HD DVR ---Optical---> Onkyo 3400
Panny ST30 ---Optical---> Onkyo 3400

Laptop ---HDMI---> Onkyo 3400
Onkyo 3400 --HDMI 1.4---> Panny ST30 (ARC HDMI port)

Philips DVD Player --- A/V Cable(Y/Pb/Pr)--> Onkyo 3400
Philips DVD Player --- Coaxial (Digital Audio out)--> Onkyo 3400
Onkyo 3400 ---A/V Cable(Y/Pb/Pr)--> Panny ST30

This way i can watch DTH with or without switching on the AVR.

why its not an ideal setup? Use your AVR if you require. Airtel HD STB does not passes through 5.1 channel through HDMI, so you have no options unless your TV has optical in (I dont think it will have) and then take the optical out of the tv to the AVR.

I am not using this setup since my HT is having only 5.1 analog i/p ports.
