Orthodynamic Headphones & all things planar

:D No confusion now!
So there are two persons behind the persona. All cool.
You are still the nice person who was good enough to send us the YH2s for listening.

We guys share the same internet connection & most sites don't allow multiple ids from same i.p. address. So, I sometime reply from their TE id & vice-versa.
Hope that things are clear now.

Listening to a balanced exstata with an SR-404..not bad..but I would prefer the EHHA + LCD-2 or thunderpants + EHHA every single time. Still, its nice what the 404s can do. They do have a slight hint of sibilance and lack that beautiful ortho midrange and mainly the weight in the music that only a dynamic or ortho can bring to the experience.
Still, very nice.

edit: need to figure out what the ****'s happening with my thunderpants..sigh...I might be going down to SF next weekend to meet up with my cuz so I will see what I can do to get that out to you gents asap.

^that's the reason that the stats don't interest me so much these days. Most cheaper stats don't seem to have enough wait for my tastes & the O2 ( & the C32) is out of my price range.

Infact, I am pretty happy with my current setup. The EHHA & NAD make a divine combo.

@Sachi : Can you please post some more impressions on rev. A's sound signature?
Compared to EHHA- 1(from memory) & Liquid Gold.

ok - after keeping the amp in car's boot for 3-4 days, I sneaked it in the house and kept it quite well hidden to prevent my wife from seeing it. In next 3.5 mins she came asking what is this new gadget.
I fired it up exactly (iirc) as gurubhais (multiple personalities) instructed me to. Nothing. No red light to be seen inside. I thought - I have screwed it by letting it bump in the trunk. Cursed myself for a brief moment, and then checked the connections again. Forgot to turn the wall-socket-switch on. Switched it on, and well, it started making music.
Since putting my kid to sleep in sane timing is very important, I went to sleep with amp connected to my BB's hp out, and philips hp9000 headphone playing away the music stored on bb. Just woke up, and listening on the same philips headphone. Pulling out any headphones from their hidings is too risky at this hour, and my kid can wake up and then ensure no one else sleeps.
It is sounding great. Right now listening to Radio Paradise on flycast on blackberry. Quite clean. But when playing music from bb (all lossless wav files) I heard some screeching noise once in a blue moon. I am not sure if it is recording, but I will listen critically when I will do a critical listening :)

Big thanks to Gurubhais for building this for me! It is sounding VERY nice, but I will reserve verdict till I hear it with hp50, hd650 etc.

tired... but happy.

thanks guru..yeah i got two more exstatas needing to be finshed up. One to a friend that has waited over a year for it now and the other will be my personal one. They both will look identical to the ones in the pic posted above. Mine will be using the Sanyo 2SC3675 instead of the fairchilds.

The two exstatas shown above will be sent off to SF to their new owner shortly.

ok - back to listening. Last time when I was listening, I heard some screeching noise from left of my philips headphone. I checked via other sources and it seemed the problem is with the headphone only. Then tried more headphones and it is indeed the headphone only.
I do not recall if there was any issue at any volume with this headphone earlier, so just worried if this could be the new amp that did this, I hope it did not. Still I am brave enough to connect my hd650 to it and it is again making music. Source again is BB/ radio paradise as I am yet to connect it with my cdp/ lyrita dac box. Hope to do some comparisons with lyrita amp's headphone out soon.

I don't think the amp has anything to do with the screeching you hear in your philips can.
I have used it with most of headpones we have here including LCD-2, NAD & dynamic cans like DT880(high impedance) & D1001(low impedance) & all of these are fine.

@guru - ok. I am religiously following the procedure.
Boot up - Switch on heater ps, then the main supply, then start the song and then plug in the headphones.
Shutdown - pull out the hp, turn off mains, turn off heater.

I think the philips shp-9000 is a special headphone and I would need to fix it, with your help.

That seems fine.

Be warned, any dynamic can which reaches me would be converted into an ortho. :D

how? *scratching my head* but I guess the change would be for good.

Guess it's like a sex change surgery. What goes into gurubhai's headphone surgery table comes out much more sexier ;)

gurubhai,

Can you do the surgery for any dynamic headphone? For a portable headphone too? If yes, I've a few sleeping here that I might consider Ortho-ing.

how? *scratching my head* but I guess the change would be for good.

By replacing the dynamic drivers with orthodynamic ones. I have a spare set of SFI ortho drivers which I have been keeping for a a future project.

@esantosh : the SFI driver is 35mm in size, so if your headphones enclosures are larger than that then it can be done. Can't say how it will sound though, too manay factors to consider.

listening to yamaha hp 50s on lyrita amp - radio paradise on appletv. Sounding quite nice. Need to reshuffle some stuff before listening on ideal setup with ehha.
