Orthodynamic Headphones & all things planar

I got it from 8audio Hong Kong for $20 though the circuit is quiet simple will make my own etched PCB if I find all the components in Chandigarh. The circuit requires 12 V for the relays. As you power on the LED blinks for a minute before the relays energize sending the power to the sigma 22. This circuit is basically designed for voltages up to 250V so can be used in tube amps operating at higher voltages too. I think Sachu has something similar.

You can make cheaper ones using transistors / NE555 based astable multi vibrator but this one is cooler.

^The last one I saw went for around $700 & that one wasn't even on US ebay.
Lets see how this one goes.

I would say, yes.
Technically the LCD-2 is much better. It measures great & sounds great too.
I asked the same question my good friend who owns them both & I hope he doesn't mind me quoting him.
Ah I think I need to explain. The aiwa and lcd2 are technically more superior, full range, bigger stage than yh1000. Just the yh1000 makes my toes tap. It's all a matter of taste.

Apart from that its extremely rare & there are collectors who don't really care about sane price when it comes to such things.

Looks nice!

The T50RP can be modded pretty well in their stock housing too. It won't look as good as these but sounds pretty well.
In fact, when we had the Thunderpants for the loan, I was quite surprised at how similar our modded T50RP(after switching to O2 earpads) & TPs sounded.

Could you please point me to a link that lists a few critical and effective mods that can be performed without replacing the housing? I'm trying to see if there are mods that can be done without blowing more than about $25 that would improve the sound, instead of blowing a big amount for the TP mods...

Here's a summary for various T50RP mods that have been proposed on Head-fi.

I haven't gone through them, but the rastapants 2(from mrspeakers) seems to have some nice measurements to back up.

The issue with using someone else's modding scheme is that unless you use exact same materials, you never know if you are getting close to them.

The other approach, and the one I would recommend, is to actually learn a bit about why the mods are done & what kind of change you should expect from them. That way, you can devise your own scheme, with materials available to you. A good starting point is to read first 30 pages of the huge ortho roundup & use search function to skim through the information buried (and mind you there is a huge wealth of knowledge) in that thread. Its a bit time consuming, but ultimately a more rewarding endeavor.

Got it. I did go through the Rastapants and a half a dozen of other pants but like you said, I was not able to get a proper fix of what needs to be changed. I'll try to go through the ortho thread again, maybe when I have a few hours to spare, and see if I get any ideas. Thank you for your time and advice.

Just to start, take a square piece of felt equal to the size of driver & place it right behind the driver(beneath he stock foam). Try to listen for changes in sound signature & transients & proceed accordingly.

Cool, will try that once I get my hands on the cans. At the moment I'm torn between the Fostex and the Equation RP-21...

Ahh, no activity since last december. What's up with Indian orthophiles?

I guess it needs a kickstart. Anyone up for a Yamaha HP50 loaner ?

Bought a pair of Fostex T50RP recently and it has successfully replaced my Audio Technica ATH M50s and they are back to Amazon.
I am amazed by the sound it produces. Totally loving it!

A few mods are on its way to satisfy the inner DIY'er in me ;)

Initially thought of replacing the 1/4" plug with a 1/8" plug but now thinking of getting a replacement cable from V-moda like these.
Adding headband cushions like these.
Earcup cushions like these.
Damping the baffle and the inner side of the cups.

The V-moda cable is a good option.
About the headband cushion, I personally think LFF's suspension mod is a better solution.

FYI, the shure earpads you linked are available in India so you can try them. But I wouldn't recommend them.

The LFF's suspension mod looks good need to try this out.

As I am in the US currently, so getting replacement parts is a breeze.

BTW, I have gone ahead and have mass loaded the baffle with blue tack and have damped the cups using stick on felt sheets. The mod, along with continuous burn in has improved the sound significantly.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
