Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Review

Hi Sakt.. et al

I purchased DMP-BDT220, Bluray Disk(Dark Knight Rises) and HDMI cable, all reached Borderlinx. Now they are asking for 104$ to ship to India. Here are the details,

Tax is not added, but i don't understand this fuel charge. Please verify it.

I have very basic idea of Boderlinx, as I used ishopinternational.com for my purchase of the player.

But as described by "jsmithe" and the link provided it clearly explains the fuel charge. Its basically a surcharge which is added on the shipping cost.

Hi Saketb,

How much did ishopint charged for shipping BDT220 to India ? How is their service, reliable. How long does it take ? From their site it looks like 10 days.

And... finally I have it. The Panasonic DMP-BDT220 Blu-ray player.

Firstly, I would like to thank "just4kix" for recommending this player. "baijuxavior" for recommending ishopinternational.com. And all other FM's for giving and sharing, information asked for.

Oh, I have waited for this for a long time and ever since, you all started discussing regarding importing from the US, I fell for it.
I ordered the player through ishopinternational.com and made a payment of Rs. 8601.00 including everything, yes I mean everything. The payment was made on the 25th Dec, morning and I got the delivery today i.e., 3rd Jan, 2013.

That's 10 days in total. Payment was through credit card in Indian Rupees, so no bank charges on foreign exchange and delivery was through ICC Worldwide from New York to Mumbai and through Blue Dart from Mumbai to Bangalore.
The packaging was good and damage free with original amazon carton.

Now, that I got the player, I was eagerly waiting to use it, so went ahead with all kinds of media. Its an amazing player and plays anything fed to it. The best part I liked was the up-scaling or re-master of audio media which are of/below 44.1kHz (Audio CD's/MP3) to 88.2kHz. I found the difference in some of the songs played. Even the internet radio (shoutcast radio) is re-mastered at 88.2kHz.

Played a few flac files of 16Bit 44.1, 24 Bit 88.2, 96 & 192kHz and I can say, they were amazing and sounded great which anyone can fall for.

Played some Blu-ray movies, and the video and audio quality was jaw dropping. Much better than what I was playing till now, through a Blu-ray writer on my computer. I guess that's why a dedicated Blu-ray player is made for. No luck on 3D as I lack a 3D display, but I'm glad that the player has the feature for future use. The loading times are really fast on this player.

Made it region free as per instructions given by "just4kix". Tried all regions of Blu-ray and DVD's and it plays everything flawlessly. PAL is not an issue, once you have this firmware updated, though you have to enable it.

Bought a step-down converter from Maxconn rated at 50 watts, priced at Rs. 200. And even after a continuous use for almost 5 hours its just warm.

Overall, I am satisfied with this player and can give a 10/10 for its value, quality and playability.

Hi Sakteb,

Just read your review, you got it for a good deal. I used debit card and purchased 3 items from Amazon and shipped to BL (BDT220, Bluray Disc & HDMI). I paid total 14K till now. Waiting for it to reach on next week.

Below is the details and break-up of what I paid.

Item price, local shipping, taxes: Rs. 5,544
International Shipping: Rs. 1,792
Duty, Taxes, & Fees: Rs. 1,765
- DISCOUNT - Rs. 500
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
TOTAL Rs. 8,601

They took 10 days to deliver, and its is quite reliable. Their service also is good.

You got it from Amazon US ?

Ah, the voltage factor, what about that ? 250V ?

As you would have read the above posts where I have mentioned almost all information I had with importing this player. As, this player is not available in India, its best suited to import from amazon US and make it region free through firmware upgrade (which should only be discussed through PM).

Yes, the voltage factor... you have to buy a 50 watts rating step-down converter (transformer based) for this player to work under normal circumstances here in India, as this supports only 120V. The converter will convert the 220-240V to 120V and supply to the player for it to function properly.

Now, there is a 10 hertz difference in the current compared to US and India. In the US, its 60 hertz and in India its 50 hertz. Many people report that they have noticed jitters in playing video content, but I, after using this player for more than 40 hours, haven't noticed any issues.

The internal wifi is great and setup is a breeze. DLNA is quite fast and responsive compared to other devices I use. Only issue you may come across, is if you have a "G" wifi router. With a "N" router things are really fast.

Overall, its a good player for around 10K range with 3D & region free. Plus the playability is extensive and A/V quality is superb.

That's usually not a factor to worry about nowadays. 50W 220-110V converter are usually Rs. 250 to 500 and and about the size of a wallwart. Larger converters above 50W cost about Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1500 and are usually about the size of a 14" laptop (LxB, Height tends to vary). These are necessary if power draw is estimated to be more than 50W or if multiple 110V equipment are to be connected via a powerstrip. :)

I see saket has already answered the question. Anyway, can't delete the post so it stays for posterity.

It is mentioned on the packaging of the step-down converter that "After use, remove the converter from the wall outlet immediately". I use a "Maxcon (Sinusodial Wave Forms) model no. M 745A - 50 Watts", converter.

Is it necessary to switch off the power to the player after use? As, I keep the devices on standby mode and switch off only when I go to sleep at night.
If not done immediately, does it harm in any way? Though I haven't found any issue till now, when keeping it on standby for about half a day.

I switch off all appliances at night (except fridge of course). This includes two TVs, VCR, AVR, BDPs, microwave, etc.

I keep the converter plugged in if I anticipate using the connected equipment. The power draw from the BDP in standby is probably quite low, though if I wanted to be an eco-warrior I suppose it would be best if unplugged when not in use.

Finally ordered it through ishop, thanks to all for the info on this wonderful site, comes out to be a hassle free experience, at least till payment, let's see how things move ahead. One query, I guess this will work for the player to be able to use it in India ?

Great to know that you have purchased this player. I'm sure that everything will pan out perfectly without any hassles.

With regards to the converter, looks like the ebay seller has something else to offer...
When I zoomed the product image, it read some other brand and not "Maxcon". Its always better to buy an original product rather than repenting later. Better confirm with the seller before purchasing the converter.

Instead you can buy the converter directly from the manufacturer (link below) and be rest assured for quality stuff. They have dealers all around India, so you can find one in Delhi.

Thanks to all helpful forum members I have placed my order through ishopinternational. Now will trouble you via PM to get the firmware upgrade details.

Thanks Guys.

Hello friends!

Finally joined the race and yesterday ordered this player from US! Actually one of my friend was coming to Pune, so just asked him to bring one for me. http://www.hifivision.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I've a Panasonic 42V20 plasma at home to complement that player. He is coming on 10th, so eagerly waiting for that. http://www.hifivision.com/images/smilies/ohyeah.gif

Now I need to buy a voltage converter for that. Can I get that in local shops in Pune, or big stores like Croma keep those?

Also need to buy few BR discs to enjoy that beauty!

I really thank to all the forum member who provided such a great info and review about this player.

Thanks,
Durgesh
